Th' hell is this?? Doesn't look like the kind of thing that Scorsese usually puts his name on, even as executive producer.

Director's Label series:
B0009XRZRY.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

(also available separately. Specs are available at Amazon--too long to post here. The Romanek disc is a must-own at the very least.)

No boxart for Doctor Detroit.
No boxart for Psycho 2 and Psycho 3.

Television includes Smallville S4, Frasier S6, Sigmund and the Sea Monster S1, Absolutely Fabulous S1-5 (rerelease?) Brady Bunch S3, Cheers S6, Frasier S6, Da Ali G Show S1-2.

I'll get the Director's Label set eventually, but not right now. That's about it from this week.

I have the Michel Gondry DVD
How are these directors compared to him?

I can't account for the taste of others, but I think Mark Romanek is one of the very best music video directors in the short history of the format--I would even put him ahead of David Fincher.

The list of videos on the Romanek disc:

THE WORK OF DIRECTOR MARK ROMANEK
Jay Z - 99 Problems (director's cut)
Linkin Park - Faint
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Can't Stop
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Audioslave - Cochise (director's cut)
No Doubt - Hella Good (director's cut)
Mick Jagger - God Gave Me Everything
Janet Jackson featuring Joni Mitchell and Q-Tip - Got Til It's Gone
Fiona Apple - Criminal
Nine Inch Nails - Perfect Drug
Beck - Devil's Haircut
Weezer - El Scorcho (director's cut)
Eels - Novocaine for the Soul
Sonic Youth - Little Trouble Girl
Michael & Janet Jackson - Scream (director's cut)
Madonna - Bedtime Story
R.E.M. - Strange Currencies
G. Love & Special Sauce - Cold Beverage
Nine Inch Nails - Closer (director's cut)
David Bowie - Jump, They Say
Madonna - Rain
Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way
Keith Richards - Wicked as it Seems (director's cut)
En Vogue - Free Your Mind
kd lang - Constant Craving

The videos for Hurt, Jump They Say, Free Your Mind, Bedtime Story, and Are You Gonna Go My Way justify the disc alone: everything else is gravy.

Athankyou.
It might be worth picking up with some Christmas money, then.
The Gondry DVD I just love.

In my quest to obtain every movie Tom Waits has been in...
B0009R1TI6.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

And I might pick up the director's label box set. Some solid stuff in there.

Ali G Season 2
Smallville the crap season 4
Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy

My buys for the week.

Marv was awesome in this ...but the movie made very little sense near the end IMO.

Da Ali G Show S2 is mine. Other than that, a pretty poor crop of DVD releases.

HOLY SHIT THIS COMES OUT TUESDAY?

goddamn it has been far too long. i cant wait!!!

Remember when we used to have GOOD Dvd releases to look forward to?

The DVD scene has been sucking ass for quite some time. Most of the old classics are now here and if they are coming out, its some anniversary edition or some "ultra deluxe" version with hours of useless shit nobody will watch.

Not sure if I'll buy or rent this.

God... I don't think I could ever watch Palindromes again, so no purchase for me. It was a well made spiritual sequel to Welcome to the Dollhouse, but I was left emotionally drained walking out of the theater.

This wonderful film also comes out on Tuesday, but much like Palindromes, rent it. There are films that I love, but would never want to watch ever again, and Nobody Knows is one of them.

Noted and acted upon: Nexflix ho!

And I third the Nobody Knows recommendation. Amazing film.

I guess I'm missing something, but I can't say I see anything that special about that video. Hurt, Bedtime Stories, and Scream are amazing, though.

Romanek is the king of the performance video. He has an amazing ear for music and knows how to really make a video work with a song. I mean, he made a fantastic video for LINKIN PARK...think about it.

I might pick up first DVD of the Mars Daybreak. Bebop is hardly worth a re-purchase especially given no video improvements are featured...so I'll pass on that one...

Hmmm that directors label set is also tempting...last ones were great..all depends on the price I guess...

I've had the Bebop DVDs since 2000 and have no interest in a new 5.1 mix, so the Remix is a pass. Like many habits of anime fans (Obsession with boxes, buying R2s even if you don't speak Japanese), double dipping makes no sense to me.

Just one DVD this week.

Although everyone should see Palindromes and Nobody Knows. Well worth rentals.

Memles says this also: Romanek performance videos are something special--it's not just some guy plunking a camera down and telling the band to knock out a tune. I mean, look at the lighting here (assuming these don't show up as red Xs):

07_still_01.jpg

Look at those warm browns and reds--at the time this video came out (1992?), Romanek didn't have all the digital grading tools on hand that make color palettes like that more feasible today. Also, here's some more cool lighting, and note that the audience is on two tiers. Why would Lenny Kravitz perform in such an impractical audience space? Why is everybody dressed in black? Who knows--but it's awesome:

07_still_06.jpg

And the way that Kravitz's hair flies around during the whole video is the finishing touch. (Bonus: note the mike stand as a compositional element, pointing up to the center of the ring of lights. Mark f*cking Romanek.)

Carlito's Way Ultimate Edition i guess came out today too. Its pretty basic though, so i'll wait til it hits $10 or so.

I bought the original bare bone DVD at Wal-Mart some time ago for $8 or so. I thought this new edition was supposed to be rather good on features? I love the movie (more so than Scarface), but then again I'm a Pacino whore.

For what it's worth, the Frankenstein disc looks to be of the made for TV movie(miniseries?) that was on USA or some such network some time back.

When I went to Best Buy to purchase the Romanek disc, I took a look at Ben-Hur, and ended up picking that up as well. Warner Bros. pulled out all the stops for another one of their discs--they're like Criterion, except they manage this just about every single week. Specs:

Discs 1 and 2--1959 Movie (222 minutes)

16x9 transfer, 2.76:1 aspect ratio
Commentary track with film historian T. Gene Hatcher and Charlton Heston
Isolated Music Score--every DVD should have this

Disc 3--1925 Silent Version, restored with a new orchestral score

Disc 4--extras: two making-of documentaries, a bunch of still, screen tests, trailers, etc., etc.
