...however, I've noticed something strange. Analog control in the game works just like digital control - i.e. you can only move in 8 directions, so you get no benefit from using the analog stick instead of the D-pad. What the hell gives? The other Xbox DW games weren't this way, were they?

The Xbox version is the same as the PS2 version, except for japanese language track and 5.1 sound, right?

Pretty much. I think the draw distance might be a little better, and the usual jaggies are reduced, as usual. I bought the Xbox version because I'm used to the JP voice cast, but...this is irritating.

It's a pretty fucking sloppy thing to leave out, and none of the reviews have mentioned it.

I hope more than that. New gameplay modes would be nice. And online play would be great. Right now the only thin Koei keeps on showing is the DW5 intro movie for DW5 Special Edition. I don't know if that is good or bad. The game is supposed to be out either in December or January in Japan. Probably means March 2006 for North America.

DW5SE looks pretty nice. Vids are up at Gamespot, essentially the largest difference is 720p support and a slight bump to the models. Certainly not an overhaul, but...well take a look yourselves.

OK, something else to complain about: I'm using my Xbox with 2.1 speakers, and even though I've set my Xbox to use stereo instead of Dolby, DW5 still thinks I'm using 5.1. So when I'm beating on a guy who's between me and the camera, the sound is lost in the nonexistent rear channels. None of the rear-channel stuff is downmixed into stereo.

For the record, the game rocks. It's like the good parts of previous DW plus the good parts of SW and the fun map conquest stuff from DW4E without any of the lameness. I just want a version of the game without stupid port issues, but with the JP voices. I hate compromising like this.

Special will probably have Xtreme Legends included. I wouldn't hold out for major graphical differences. Maybe higher polygon models, less fog, and little or no slowdown. Going from Koei's PS3 list, it seems like Omega Force is taking their time making sure DW6 kicks ass.

Yeah I thought the same thing. 8 way running. I wasn't too impressed with the X360 video either. Too much pop in the distance and too many character popping up close up. The models look halfway decent, but for a next gen game I expect more. Of course Koei is more than likely saving the goods for Dynasty Warriors 6 on PS3. This looks like quick cash in port.

Spartan: Total Warrior sounds cool, too. I may pick that one up on the cheap.

The differences between the Xbox and Xbox 360 versions of DW5 are noticeable. Some pop up, no slowdown, and individual and accurate shadows for each character.

To be fair, it is sometimes hard to see such differences in small video feeds. That video is tiny so it is hard to pick up all the detail. I would like to see some direct feed.
