Dynasty Warriors Advance

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
Anyone pick it up yet? I did, but haven't had a chance to put it through its paces... Impressions later.

Ugh, I had to review it, and it's... well, not very good.

If you're gonna spend 29.99, please do it on Advance Wars: Dual Strike, without question the best DS game.

I already have AWDS, of course. I'll read your review, thanks. Didn't see any discussion on the game here on GAF, surprisingly enough, and didn't know it had even come out until I found it by accident in a store today.

Edit - Interesting review. Strange to see it compared to either Advance Wars or Fire Emblem, since the Dynasty Warriors franchise NEVER had anything to do with either. Also, the review mentions FE as being a blend of strategy and action, and implies that it succeeds where DWA fails. However, there's not a lick of action in FE. It's all strategy and RPG. Still... looks like I bought a stinker. I'll play it and see if it's as horrendous as the PSP game was. :)

Yeah, this game isn't getting much attention, which isn't surprising, based on the scores and quality. Nintendo really needed something to fill up a week if it took the time to publish this.

I only compared it to the FE series, because like the FE series, you have a battlefield, where you move your characters (and somewhat strategize), encounter enemies, and trigger a battle scene. In FE's case, the battle scene is automatic, but in Dynasty Warriors, you keep playing (that's the button-masher part). I also compared the sloppy graphics to the Fire Emblem graphics, which in my opinion, are fantastic while still done in 2D. Koei just didn't seem to care when it came to the graphical presentation (except for the cutscenes), even though the GBA is a very capable 2D machine -- proven by Intelligent Systems' amazing games.

My GameSpot Review here

The gist: Extremely watered down, doesn't really live up to what the GBA can do graphically or musically, vaguely captures spirit of console games... but the characters and stories are mostly intact.

I had a choice between it and RebelStar Tactical Command also for GBA. I picked RebelStar.

I highly recommend RebelStar Tactical Command for those of you who want to keep on strategizing past Advance Wars and Fire Emblem. It's basically a collection of missions with X-Com style battle screen gameplay.
