Mesdames, Messieurs, chers amis,

First of all, welcome back to E3. This is the 19th edition of this epic event, and also the first one after the release of all "next generation" consoles (PS4, Wii U, Xbox One), so there's much at stake here. All of the big five have potential megaton (if not gigaton) announcements to make, and the battle for supremacy is as hot as ever. And we're just mere days away from it all.

I've created this thread, just like last year and in 2012, to provide a small guide on what press conferences to follow and when they happen as well as what's happening around the event and from where to gather press assets and more. One change this year is that I won't post an exhibitor list with games connected. I might provide some general summaries of announcements, but new threads for new news of course. And those we won't have a shortage of for quite a while.

The expo itself doesn't start until the 10th of June, but as early as 9:30 AM PDT on June 9th will Microsoft start the press conference schedule when they will reveal new games for the Xbox One (and perhaps some latecomer for Xbox 360). Halo 5: Guardians, Sunset Overdrive and Fable: Legends are hot titles MS will show, but there's also rumors of high definition remasters of Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4, with emphasis on Halo 2. It ought to be quite an extraordinary presentation, if they can top the great Halo 2 showing at E3 2004 we're in for a treat. Following Microsoft on the 9th are Electronic Arts, Ubisoft and lastly Sony who will present their respective products, which range between everything from Star Wars: Battlefront to Assassin's Creed Unity, to name a few. I know quite a few peeps are anticipating a great many things from Sony, with Uncharted 4 and... The Last Guardian being top tier.

Finally, Nintendo, who just like last year foregoes a traditional press conference, will in a so called Digital Event on the 10th of June, shortly before the doors to the expo open, reveal new games for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, including a new The Legend of Zelda and NFC titles as well as disclose more information about already revealed titles such as Super Smash Bros., Bayonetta 2 and likely loads more. Whether this event will be pre-recorded or a live broadcast is currently unknown, regardless they won't be up on a stage
in front of thousands of press folks like in earlier years.

Anyway, the schedule's packed, we're just a few days away from gaming nirvana and the hype trains stand ready. Have a great E3!

Press conferences are what most people care about the most, so let's start with them, but first of all a handy table of regional times for the press events (thanks, DeMatador and Cheesemeister):

Every year, Nintendo looks for the best way to show its games and share its news with fans, media and other key audiences. In 2013, Nintendo decided to forgo a traditional press conference and use a video – in that case a Nintendo Direct – to share its news from E3. The company is building on that approach at E3 2014 with the "Nintendo Digital Event," a new kind of video program that will reveal and provide further detail about the gaming experiences on the way for Nintendo platforms in 2014 and beyond. The Nintendo Digital Event will air at 9 a.m. PT on Tuesday, June 10.
They have several other events going on as well, which you can read about here.

One great thing with E3 is the reactions and discussions during and after the press conferences. And what better way to experience it all in real time via chat?

Below are some chat channels that can be used during E3 (to be expanded upon):

The Steam NeoGAF group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/neogaf
The NeoGAF Tinychat: http://www.tinychat.com/tinygaffers

IRC chat for at least the conferences of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will be provided. I won't post the address to these here directly (due to password protection etc.), so you better ask in each respective thread (going up about one hour prior to the conferences).

These are the questions I best think are suitable for NeoGAF, for both enthusiasts and attendees on a more general level.
The official FAQ is of course readily available as well here: http://www.e3expo.com/attendee/1798/faq/

If you want anything added to the FAQ, just gimme a shout.

1. What exactly is E3?

E3 is the world's most prominent trade show for computer and video games and related products.
The show houses opportunity for game developers to show their latest projects, for retailers and distributors
to get together and for the press to get the biggest scoops.

The most exciting by far at E3 are the respective press conferences of the industry's top tier companies.
Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft each year host large briefings where they show new games and hardware.
It's here where new hardware, such as Wii U, is announced.

2. Is the show open to the public?

Nope, the show is not open to the general public. It's intended only for professionals from the industry.
Loopholes exist though and while often problematic, non-professionals are known to have entered.
But industry qualification is needed to gain access to E3, and those that cannot document their current professional
affiliation to the industry are not qualified. Though if you haven't got business at the show, you really shouldn't be there.
And besides, most of it is broadcasted (often live) by several news outlets, so it's hard to miss anyway.

Click here to view Industry Requirements.

3. When and where does E3 take place?

E3 2014, the actual expo, is scheduled to take place June 10-12, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Press conferences of Electronic Arts, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft happen some days prior.
The Los Angeles Convention Center is located at the intersection of the Santa Monica and Harbor Freeways.

4. Where is on-site Registration located at the Los Angeles Convention Center and what are the hours of operation?

On-site Registration counters are located in the South Hall Lobby of the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Badge Pick-up counters are located outside of both the South and West Hall Lobbies.

On-site Registration Hours:

Sunday, June 8, 2014: 1:00PM - 6:00PM
Monday, June 9, 2014: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Tuesday, June 10, 2014: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Wednesday, June 11, 2014: 8:00AM - 6:00PM
Thursday, June 12, 2014: 8:00AM - 5:00PM

For questions about your registration, contact the E3 Registration Customer Service team at 877-216-6263.
For calls outside the U.S. dial 708-486-0718.

Do I need to show ID to get my badge?

All E3 Attendees will be required to show a government issued photo ID (driver's license or passport) in order to pick up their badge holder on-site and gain access to the event. Do not use a fictitious name. The name on your ID and the name on your badge must be the same.

5. I work in the industry but I missed the April 29th deadline for free show floor admission. Can I still attend?

Yes. Registration will be available online and on-site at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC) through show dates. The admission charge after April 29, 2014, is $995 for a three-day show floor pass.

5. What are the exhibit floor hours?

The exhibit floors will be open:

Tuesday, June 10: 12:00PM - 6:00PM
Wednesday, June 11: 10:00AM - 6:00PM
Thursday, June 12: 10:00AM - 5:00PM

Same goes for Meeting Rooms, but they open one hour earlier on Wednesday and Thursday.

5. Who is exhibiting at E3?

Software and hardware developers, news outlets, financial agencies, government bodies and many more exhibit at E3. The focus is on software and hardware developers though, where Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony are the main attractions.

The exhibitor list is available in two versions:

Static version: http://e314.mapyourshow.com/5_0/search.cfm
Interactive version: http://www.mapyourshow.com/shows/index.cfm?Show_ID=E314

6. Does the Los Angeles Convention Center feature a parking lot?

Yes, it does. The LACC has 5500 parking spaces. The parking fee is $12 and does not include in and out privileges.
Should the parking lot be full, there are plenty of other parking lots nearby.

7. Is there any restaurant/café at the Los Angeles Convention Center?

The LACC has a Food and Beverage Services Department by Aramark. I'm not sure on what menu will be available this year,
but you can browse the full menu offered here: http://www.lacclink.com/lacclink/documents/foodservices/CateringMenu.pdf

Two examples:

breakfastqxb0e.png

lunchogyyu.png

Restaurant outlets operating at the LACC are Compass Cafe, Galaxy Court, Trade Winds Cafe and Starbucks. Several concession stands, with seasonal menus, are also available.

Otherwise, Los Angeles features many restaurants to choose from. And with the variety of food, it'd be a shame if you didn't at least try one restaurant.
LA Tourism & Convention Board has created an excellent guide of dining places: http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/what-to-do/restaurants

8. What facilities are available for media on-site at E3 2014?

The E3 2014 Media Center, in Petree Hall, offers convenient support for journalists covering the show free of charge. It features a fully equipped, large working newsroom including:

  • Mac and PC computers
  • High-speed Internet access
  • Wi-Fi network access
  • Standard office equipment
  • Photocopy machine
  • Media-only hospitality suite
  • Lockers
Media Center Hours:

During E3, we will be looking at tons of information from various sources. As there is a myriad of gaming websites, I will only link to the most notable (that are also known to attend E3 and report explicitly from the show). General media sites are also linked as many of them cover E3 as well.

Though prior to the list, I would like to take a moment to once again link to some press sites, this time to those of the big five (EA, Microsoft, Nintendo, Ubisoft and Sony). While mainly for journalists, some of these sites can be useful if you want to create an official thread for a certain game.

Microsoft

Microsoft provides press material in a very nice way. It's readily available for anyone as there is no password protection (except for some press releases),
and you can find anything from game covers in PSD format to logo files in vector format (EPS/AI mostly).

Xbox Media: http://news.xbox.com/media

Connected to the Xbox Wire blog.

Microsoft News Center: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/

All things Microsoft! Here you can download assets not only for Xbox but for all of Microsoft.
Event photos (from E3), logos, press releases, product shots, video and much more.
No password needed.

Nintendo

The hub we will be looking at during E3 is this:

http://media.nintendo.com/pressroom/E32014/

Hosted via Nintendo of America's media site as far as I know. That page is password protected (and the guest pass was removed late last year), though the above press room can be accessed without a password, at least currently. Should it be changed and it prompts a login, it's usually something like this:

User name: Nintendo
Password: E32013

I will update the above once more details are made available. If you need a permanent login, you can contact Golin Harris associate Deanna Avila.

Sony

Sony's press sites are password protected, and the PlayStation Press Center underwent some large changes last year, purging a lot of account and removing the guest login. The page is available here though

PlayStation Press Center: http://presscenter.playstation.com/

If you need a login, I believe you need to contact SCEA via phone/e-mail as I can find no way to register via that site.

Sony PressVault: http://www.sceuk-press.net/

This is Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's press site. Operates as the one for SCEA.

General press releases are available here: http://us.playstation.com/corporate/about/press-release/

Electronic Arts

EA has two press sites, one for North America and one for Europe (well, UK to be specific).

EA NA Press Site: http://www.info.ea.com/

Features press releases, product packshots and screenshots mainly. Mostly supplied in JPEG format,
but videos are available in high quality (many in 1080p format). No password needed for download.

EA EU Press Site: http://ea.gamespress.com/

Similar to the NA site, but features files in other formats than JPEG. Password is needed for download though.

Ubisoft

Ubisoft Press Extranet: http://ubisoft-press.com/

Password protected site, like Sony's. Most material will be available on other press sites as well though.

If you are in need of a good press hub to download assets from, I suggest you take a look at (quote to see) . Please don't send an application if you are not a journalist however.

One site that can also be very useful during E3 is Business Wire: http://www.businesswire.com

This requires no password and many companies, Nintendo for example, use this service for press releases. Easy to navigate and the search function is great.

But now that we are done with that, let's get to the list of news sources:

Gaming/tech media

General media

All of these attended E3 last year, so there should be news about the event coming.

If you have suggestions on sites to add to the list, just post as a reply and I will see what I can do.

Magnificent OP's.The paragraph formatting for the Company write-ups is a bit messed up though.

The glorious week is nearly upon us.

Great OT, and the Spotify playlist is an excellent touch. NEXT WEEK WILL BE AMAZING
HOPEFULLY NOT DISAPPOINTING

I have the day off from work, so I'll get to catch most of the shows live. I already know I'll probably have to do without GAF for a while, but I stop by here so often, it's just habit now. "Damn, GAF's down... better check GAF."

Is embedding GIFs in this thread frowned upon? I remember reading Nirolak post about wanting the first page (100ppp) of E3 threads to not have so many GIFs so they don't cause the page to load for a long time.
It's time GAF.

Subbed. Cred to whoever made the gif back in 2011, edited the year.
DrForester (he's the one who made it) made a general version that can be used for any E3.

Time for some sleep. I'll be fine tuning some stuff over the weekend.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
So bummed I can't take time off for this. Made all the more frustrating by Monday in Australia being a public holiday. Short week is a plus, but all the conferences fall on early Tuesday morning for me, Nintendo Wednesday morning.

I'm going to be around all week for this. Shame I have to moderate Tinychat at the same time as this.

WHERE TO "WATCH"

If you guys don't know yet the newest Twitch app release has audio-only for those of us who can't "watch" it live. If you can "listen" to music during work - this may be an option

I've used it a bit for Dota lately and it's butter smooth with zero lag since you only need the audio. Might also be a good option 2 for home viewers if the lagging starts lagging.

Lucky. Hmm. Tuesday should be a fairly easy day. Maybe I can force myself an early night, get up, watch the conferences, and endure a day of work :p.

sweet, my fucking PC is about to die right before E3. I haven't really ever looked into console browsers, which streams can I watch on either a PS3 or WiiU? And how stable are they usually on a console?

Took the latter half of the work day off (EDT) to watch the Nintendo event at home with my wife and two kids. I always try to watch the Nintendo Directs with them, and the E3 event should be fun. So I'm basically father of the year, right?

Gonna watch the Sony press conference in theaters. MS one during lunch break at work. I haven't been this hyped for E3 in a while.

So are there any IRC chats set up if GAF goes down?

We're just over 48hrs away and unless I've missed it, there doesn't seem to be much talk about this or any plans in place. Both the chats last were incredible, so would love for the GAF community to be together in one chat instead of spread across multiple ones...

In the OP it says they are, you just need to PM for passwords as the conference threads go up.

I'm not sure if I should join this year.

IRC chat for at least the conferences of Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will be provided. I won't post the address to these here directly (due to password protection etc.), so you better ask in each respective thread (going up about one hour prior to the conferences).

Ps blog says us europeans can watch the sony conference on ps4 with the ign app.
Does anyone know if I can watch the ms, ea and ubi conferences as well, or is there some exclusive thingy because I'm watching via ps4?

You can watch the other conferences too on the app, since its IGN's app. If there's a twitch, youtube, gametrailers, gamespot app on PS4 too, you can watch via these sources as well.

The OP has the wrong time for Ubi in London. Here's a fixed version.

Thanks, Cheesemeister.

I updated the thread with some listings of games. Due to the character limit (24 000) I had to move some sections to the second post. That limit ought to be increased I think.
