E3 Registration Now Open

I hope I will be there, this should be a E3 to remember with a full scale war between MS and Sony.
But then I would not be able to update my site, and miss all the forum explosion fun like last year.
Difficult choice :/

I don't wanna go to E3...

Fenekku, how many E3 do you think I need to say the same? Is there any journalist there that isn´t tired after the third or fourth time?

My first one (last year) was very fun, and that being pretty harsh (insane work, three nights almost without sleep, nervous about my first interviews, running from one part to another to arrive in time, my suitcase didn´t arrive to L.A...).

I enjoyed more E3 than TGS (but only the event, I enjoyed more the travel to Japan, mostly because Tokyo is awesome and L.A... is not ;))

I work as a programmer at a telecommunications company. Do you think that would work? I could always make something up about how we're looking to develop software for network gaming.

If not, I can falsify my friend's Gamestop paycheck stub like I did last year...

E3 is my dream, but i am on the other side of the world :(

Guess I have to livestream the conferances like I did last year. It isn't so bad that either :D

I will be on the egde my seat when Nintendo finally reveal the new Zelda footage. Only 5 months to go!

E3 obliterates my feet, I never sleep enough, I end up enjoying 2 of the 200+ games I try out, and I end up with a hundred pounds of crap I don't need.... that said, I skipped the last one, so I'll probably go to this one.

Looking forward to media reg, when invariably I submit the stuff online, fax them what they want, and still get asked to Fed Ex in a copy of a magazine to prove that I actually write some of this crap for a living. You know, I wouldn't mind it so much if I haven't had to do that every single time, and then watched people register at the show with badly faked biz licenses and printed web pages.

I'd go if I could score a media badge, but I'm not paying in full for a standard one. Anybody interested in hooking me up with a media badge, please PM me.

I don't know about recent E3's but from 1997 - 2000 they didn't give a shit what age you were. Sure they say they do but I never got carded when I was 14. It was easy as hell to get in, have badge will travel so they say.

Oooh. Nice. Hopefully I'll be able to go then, maybe even next year.

E3 '06 is where it's at. The first E3 with PS3 and Revolution playables, and second gen Xenon software.

Agreed. Too many here are over playing 05, I'm afraid alot will be disappointed with how little was shown.

I've got a question. The last E3 I attended was the one in Atlanta before they decided to have it in LA every year. I was a regular attendeee of E3 and the Summer CES before that. Point being is that I'm out of the video game tradeshow loop and I no longer have any ties with any gaming related retailers or companies. Can I just purchase a badge and go to E3 on my own (my fiancee is actually interested in going)? I'm not worried about the badge price, I just don't want to put a plan into motion to find out after I buy plane tickets that this is an exclusive industry event (like it supposed to be).

So what I'm asking is can anybody with the means attend?

I've been to E3 for the last three years and honestly, I am fed up with it. I went as media and actually had some coverage to do. Well, doing so was tough because the places for the conferences were limited and places were cut for medias and left probably for wal-mart clerks and 3D artists that aren't (IMO) relevant for that kind of event.

There are too many people there. You see (again) Wal-Mart clerks, 3D artists and kids! The best day of the expo is probably the last one since all the crap mentionned above left and you can finally touch something.

This year was the worst. I'm part of the media and the only time that I could touch a DS was when I bought it last month. I heard about Zelda from a friend who watched the conference back in his house. Wow! I am on site and I don't have access to that!

Last thing is the city. I hate LA. I saw an asian girl speak Spanish and puzzled by the phrase "Can you call me a taxi please?". The taxi drivers are special. There's this guy who had a DVD player for us but wasn't working. He was trying to arrange it *while* driving. Wow...

I got tired of it. I'll enjoy it (and learn more info from it) from the comfort of my home this year.

Together! Forever! *ahem*

Uhh, anyways. Yeah. I always feel the same. My feet are in pain. I don't sleep nearly as much as I'd like to and always develop this fucking twitch in my eye when I'm not in motion. Man, hopefully this turns out to be my 4th E3. 4 years already, sweet Moses does time fly. It's funny, because every year I say to myself "my God this is pissing me off. This is my last E3" and I can't wait to go back. It's so sad. I enjoy the pain. =(

I plan on going again this year. This time I might be a bit outrageous by yelling at people and pushing some magazine racks over! :D

My brother and I are down. I am prepped and ready to go, seeing as I am on my feet all day at work, I get four hours of sleep a night, and I am not eating well at all. :lol

It's the same with me though, I always can't wait to get there but want to leave after like the first day. Third year.

So are the early registration e-mails a no-go this year?

I hope they are a go. I got one last year, but ended up not being able to go. *crosses fingers for this year*

Tekuno has the top! Quick, someone else reserve your spots! The floor and bathroom cabinets are still open!

Maybe I'll stay in the presidential suite...hrmm. =)

Maybe I'm in the minority but I loved L.A. when I went last year. For one thing, the weather was fantastic. Generally, I'm not really a fan of warm, sunny weather because it's always hot. This really wasn't the case in L.A. though...the breeze really cooled things down. In addition, there are some really great import stores around the city. I probably would never have gotten an import PS2 if it wasn't so easy.

Before I went, I was prepared to loathe L.A. just based upon everything you hear about it. I was pleasantly surprised though. Then again, one of the guys who was with me did all the driving so maybe I saw everything through rose-colored glasses.

I despise LA. Most disgusting city ever. The worst areas of *any* NYC borough don't look half as bad as the worst in LA. Everything about LA is filthy, especially the whole downtown area.

Time to fax my W-2 form, employee id, and paycheck. Thanks for the tips. Now I just have to plan out a trip to L.A. that doesn't involve me getting raped.

<shrugs> I don't mind filth...I think it gives a city character. I loved how the streets in L.A. looked like they'd been smeered with chocolate sauce and then wiped with a diaper.

How do I get my hands on the W-2 form?

I asked my boss to let me make a copy about a month ago, I needed it to renew my lease agreement. It's usually what they make you fill out on the first day on the job.

For those of you who are having trouble due to prices let Sony handle it! Buy a couple of PSPs at US Launch and sell them on ebay for a $100 markup.

SONY CARES ABOUT THE WORKING MAN.

Ah, okay. Thanks.

Man, I've been going since E3 2000, and I love it. I go as media every year, get into the Microsoft and Nintendo pre-shows, and I love it.

You guys just don't know how to have fun I guess, this is how we at N-Sider do it, or will be doing it this year (we've evolved a pattern over the last four years):

Arrive may 16th, the morning of the microsoft conference, we just chill and do our thang until that night and head on over to see what they got.. Also we await for other staffers to arrive.

May 17th, we hit up the Nintendo conference and then after that, chill in hollywood and have some fun -- this year we did a focus-group for digital vs standard film projection at the chinese theater, we got free dvds and popcorn etc, it was fun times.

Then later that day we hit up the LACC and get our badge holders.

That night we either go back to hollywood, or chill in the hotel and wait for other late-arriving staffers.

18th we go to Day one, do our thing at the show, and afterwards talk about teh events, do our work, etc.

19th Is day two. Also star wars ep 3, which we will attend SOMEWHERE in LA.

20th is day three, we will do our thing, then probably take a trip to hollywood that evening for dinner and some recreation.

21st is our 'relax day', where we will typically go to universal hollywood, go around the city, last year we went to china town, had some fun there.

22nd we all leave.

It's all about having fun, and spending the extra time exploring LA. I'd have to say over the last four years, I've had a great time at both the show, and exploring the city.. Obviously every year we try something different, but it's beginning to feel like every year I'm returning to a place i recognize, and it becomes less and less frightening and evil every year.

E3 is a great time, aside from the little brats, if you know how to play your cards right, you'll be fine.... As for not being able to touch anything 'as media', then you obviously dont know what that badge gives you in terms of priveladges.

You can KICK PEOPLE OFF OF MACHINES if they arent media, and i know it makes you look like an ass, but there's a reason those sony or nintendo or whoever reps are standing there, you can ask them, and they'll remove the non-media from the kiosk.

Same with the 'closed door' or 'lineup' booths, you can go to the media relations desk, give them your card, and they will escort you inside without any wait... I spent a good three hours straight in the DS booth this year. No lineups, no shuffling out. nothing.

So yeah, e3 is a great time, I love going, and I can't wait for 05.

Pfff, it's gonna be awesome! First Xenon games, Zelda, new DS and PSP software...anything from the PS3 or Revolution is just icing on the cake, they don't factor into my expectations at all (well, if they're not there in ANY form I suppose that'll be disappointing, but I don't expect that, we'll get at least announcements/specs).

19th Is day two. Also star wars ep 3, which we will attend SOMEWHERE in LA.

OH SHIT, THAT'S RIGHT!

Thursday's gonna be one loooooooong fucking day.

Man, I wish I could go as media. At least I get to go in general. That's still cool.

I live in LA (West LA). I have gone to E3 since 2000. I may or may not go this year, it seems harder and harder to play the games as there are too many people and my feet kill me as you are trying to see everything you can see.

Other than the weather and E3, LA pretty much sucks for everything else. I have lived in Hollywood and on friday nights you might as well walk on Sunset as you arn't going anywhere driving. Crusing like crazy around there and its become a gansta place to live.

You couldn't pay me to move back to west / hollywood now.

Hrmm... should I bother trying to finagle a way into e3 this year... more to the point Im wondering if it would be worth the cost of travel/lodging.

I only live about 25 minutes away from the convention center... too bad I have no way to get in.

[rant]

Got a couple of dick-ass friends who have found a person who can get them tickets, and only them, they love to brag about it and piss myself and all of our other friends off. They casually slip "E3" into random conversations about games or whatever. One of them didn't even know who Shigeru Miyamoto is. I asked him some question about Miyamoto once, and he replies with "Who?" and I say "The fucking creator of Zelda and Mario!!!" and he says "Oh.. never heard of him." If you ask me, anyone who doesn't know of Shigeru Miyamoto should not be allowed to set foot into E3.

I think the 2002 E3 was pretty bad. This was early on in everything, but it seemed like there were FAR too many people there JUST for the free stuff. It pissed me off.
In 2003, free stuff was scaled back incredibly, to my delight, except for the fact they also scaled back creativity.
2004 was much more balanced.

What do you need to get into the pre-shows?

For the most part you need to be an ACTUAL media person, eg: having press contacts at the appropriate PR firms, and not just some random E-Mail asking for admittance.

That means going through the proper channels, thats why you see mostly 'official' press, or at least recognized press at the press show... This includes television, print, and a limited online grouping of Media, as these shows are intended to show off stuff to the media in the most unique way possible: lots of blinking lights and smoke effects.

So for the most part, if you do secure yourself a media badge, then hopefully you also have the resources to get the appropriate contacts.... Do realize however, that Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony do put a 'cap' on how many people can come from each orginization --- Usually its about 5 or 6 per magazine, but through our arrangement with Nintendo, we get upwards of 12 or 14 staff members in.

I need some clarification...

1) How does the alumni process work (or how has it worked)? I was at E3 last year as a media, so does alumni make my life easier?

2) What exactly is so good about the media pass... The only priviledge I got from it was the ability to use the Media Center (and MS pre-show conference through regular connections). A lot of the closed door stuff was only to "pre-booked" media people (and I wasn't one of them)... like the Halo 2 demo for example, which I could not see. I didn't go around asking anything, though, so I guess you can skip lines and stuff...

Now that I think about it, I guess the media pass is cool for those who actually aren't in the media - who have the time to actually play the games. I barely touched any games last year due to my busy schedule and overall excitement/wonder. (Didn't have much urge either, E3 is not really that good a place to try games.)

3) If I work in the game industry (dev), should I apply for package 4 ($275) or package 5 (free) if I don't want the conferences etc? It says only industry people may attend E3 in general, but then what's the point in having package 5 (which seems to be free to "members of the interactive entertainment industry")? Confusing. http://www.e3expo.com/attendees/pricing_information.asp

I'm definitely coming this year too, and this time I'll attend the GAF meet as well.

Well, my company has never covered video games before so we don't have any contacts of that nature in place. Perhaps you could give a more detailed explanation of who we would need to contact?

Some of you people are rediculous. "OMG, this ghetto looks like a ghetto! With dirt and everything!" LA is awsome. You just have to know where to go. Don't be hanging in Skid row expecting good sushi. That's a couple streets over.
