Apparently the NFL wants it like this. They just look at the numbers and see that everyone buys it and Madden gets huge numbers. The quality of the product doesn't matter, much like it doesn't matter when it comes to the quality of actual NFL games which is horrendous these days.

There are plenty of casual players that are hardcore sports game players that are console owners whose primary reason of even owning a console is to play the annual release of their sports game. Also they may occasionally get a couple of other AAA games during the year to play.
