More importantly than the graphics, it almost brings a tear to my eye to hear console level music and sound in a portable game. No more crappy blip sand bleeps! Another thing that stuck out is the screen. I haven't seen too many videos with games played right off the PSP screen, but everything looks big on that 4.3 inch widescreen. The models and background don't feel tiny in comparison to the console counterparts.

The only problem I see right now are with MVP and NBA though. They seem like they have massive frame rate problems at the moment.

I also found this on the IGN board regarding pricing:

You should've asked about the price!! Are they going to be the ones charging $50 for games when it looks like most of the PSP games will launch at $40?

I asked the PR rep while we were playing, off the interview -- pricing hasn't been determined yet, which is interesting, because I asked if they were shooting for that $49 range that everybody assumes and that even the company has talked about doing, and EA said, not necessarily. So, maybe it means its future original titles, maybe they took a look at the hardware price and the title count at launch and reconsidered, or maybe they're still not and have not committed to a price even though we all assumed they were going to charge us $50. Dunno, honestly, but it didn't seem like she was holding back on the question so that I wouldn't report it -- it sounded maybe that it was still in the process of being determined.

With 24 launch games I think publishers are getting cold feet at the $49.99 pricepoint! Good! :D

$39.99 and less or bust!

I hope God forgives me for talking good things about the big satan that is EA.

Need for Speed looks and sounds bloody awesome.

That's it, I said it =(

They have a camera poiting directly to the screen, plus it is not like you are done to the controls of a game that is being showed for first time on its almost final stage of development ;)

Anyway this reminds me how stupid is the analog stick. I've tried it with Ridge Racers and not only is not better than the d-pad but also way uncomfortable.

I'm actually halfway interested in Need for Speed BUT....

I hear the PSP version doesn't have the huge open enviroment of the console version and is limited to 10 tracks. If that is true Ridge Racer get. I'm not a huge fan of racing games but racing games may be made for me and the PSP. Easy pick up and play games.

Ridge Racer is not that great, really. It is being hyped to heavens because it is actually nice looking and has good controls -something unusual for a launch game- but it is a fairly average racer for modern standards.

I say wait for reviews.

I was dead set on Ridge Racer but I don't know - NFS looks pretty damn sweet, and neither are online so the 4 player (or is it two?) wireless isn't as big a deal (I'll be lucky to find more than 1 person I know who will also get a PSP).

Tough choice, especially when you can't hear the feedback while you're standing in line at midnight on March 23. :)

The Street one looks great. Who cares if the graphics are janky close up, the gameplay looks all there.

That's kind of one thing I figured out from playing Dynasty Warriors on the PSP: at first I was very disappointed with the graphics, since it was so much worse than what I was used to on the PS2, and I guess we built up rather unrealistic expectations about what the PSP could do. But after I got used to it, I just didn't care because the gameplay was just as good; the most important thing the PSP does well for games more than the graphics is being able to deliver portable 3D gameplay . The graphics of the current consoles can only be approximated on the PSP, but the gameplay can be precisely recreated and the game experience actually doesn't suffer much at all.... unless you need a second analog stick.

Looks like they're still wasting pixel space on the goddamn EA Trax info tho :P

While I agree wih you, I wouldn't use Dynasty warriors as any sort of indication of what PSP can or will do graphically.

Bah, the huge environment thing was annoying in NFSU2. I actually preferred the regular tracks from the first NFSU. Now, I thought the whole streaming environment thing worked much better in SSX3, and I hope they manage to bring that kind of thing over to the PSP game.

Oh come on. RRs is more fun than most 'modern' racers, Burnout 3 being an exception.

]wow it actually has the videos of the songs?
Yeah, they said so in one earlier interview. Each game will have the video jukebox feature, and for the songs they don't have the video for, there will be some kind of visualizer.
It would be great if those songs/videos are accessible directly from XMB interface, without the need to boot the game.

I think it's a port of NFSU1 with 10 EXCLUSIVE tracks and 2 exclusive modes.

I went back and watched each video closely and saw some new things. The game that probably looks closest to it's console cousin is TW golf (probably since it's only one character to worry about at any given time). NFS rivals comes in a close second with good looking car models and decent looking tracks (I hope the IGN guys SUCK at racing games cause there were some really aweful crashes that should have been simple turns). MVP seems to be the game that needs lots of work if it's going to be released at launch. The framerate issues and occasional freezing were odd. Fifa seems to be lacking animations although it could be that the IGN guys once again suck and weren't using all the buttons. Street sounds exactly like Volume 3 (which is a really bad thing). One thing I couldn't help but notice was that the player models look like they were pulled straight out of a Dreamcast title like NBA Showdown. Because this title uses a very close camera angle, you see many of the graphical shortcomings. Shaq looks asstastic and the jersey numbers do that odd stretching thing that I haven't seen since the NFL2K series on the DC. Overall I'm impressed with what EA is doing for launch, and if the other games like Twisted Metal can top this I'm going to be broke next month.

Heh, at least I'm not seeing things as I thought those NBA Street models looked less detailed than the console variation. It sounds like the MVP build shown may have been one of the earliest builds of all the games. Hence the problems with it.

Street looks asstacular player models wise...as someone said it looks like they were lifted straight out of NBA Showtime.

You're right, I think it's the only one that says *early preview version by each video box. And speaking of delays, I was going to import TWgolf this week and it was pushed back to March 24 for an international launch, looks like Lumines and RR will have to hold me over till US launch.

regarding the problems of MVP, they DO have the "(*Early preview version)" labels beside the movie download links. Seems like they need to hurry up and fix that before the launch.

Framerate seems a little ropey on NFS, but it looks very nice otherwise. I hope the IGN guys just suck at racing games :lol
