from what i've read, 81's got better reviews, so that's where i'm leaning... thoughts?

I dunno about the 81s, but I've been using the 71s almost daily for ten months now. No complaints here, but then again, I'm not a diehard audiophile.

well, i got the ex81's...

they're .. weird ..

the subdued amount of outside sound takes some getting used to, especially when walking down the street...

at first i felt nauseous/dizzy/offbalance when walking...

it was strange... and i can hear myself chew...

but the audio quality sure is a step above the standard pack-in earbuds i've been using for a decade... except when i chew...

Which headphones should I get? My $20 SONY's are crapping out on me, for the umpteenth time, so I think it's about time I upgrade to something sturdy/great sounding. I was thinking these:

I've heard so much good things about them, and they're $40 on AMAZON. Does anyone here own them? Pros? Cons? Worth $40? etc.

sennheiser px100, koss ksc35/50/55/s/portapros, etc.

the other low end senns are.. crap?

i wouldn't go with the ex71. kind of boomy.

i don't hate my senn mx550 or whatever the hell these things are, if you absolutely have to have earbuds. mx500s are a little less forward, though, if that works for you.

They are tremendous.

Pros:
Reproduce bass very well, sound very clean.
After a few hours of use, the headset itself breaks in and I can go a few hours at a time without needing to take them off. When I take them off, the area around my ears isn't a swamp.

Cons:
The earpieces swivel a little bit too much. It doesn't happen frequently, but if you're going to be in motion while using these, they might start to rock off of your face.
They're open, so people within a few feet of you will hear what you're listening to.

One last note is that they are smaller than they appear in pictures, and unless you have tiny ears, these will sit on your ear instead of cupping it (which I prefer anyways).

Neither of the cons are really that big of a deal to me, as I just use them sitting on my computer. Fully recommend them, especially @ $40.

Yeah, the EX71 is freaking awesome. The EX81 looks good as well but I can imagine that becoming rather uncomfortable with prolonged usage which is never an issue with the EX71.

For better quality semi-canal phones than the EX51/71 that are at around the same price you could look to the Panasonic HEJ50s or Sharp MD33s (although you need to get these online at AudioCubes and use the included extension cord.) I think I've also heard that the 81s are a bit better, but I'm not sure. For others, the Sennheiser PX100 or Koss PortaPros are both great open phones. I've heard that the Senn HD497 is better in sound quality than the PX100 although they're a little dry/flat in comparison, so it should be a good choice too.

There are some panisonic's a lot like the EX71's that are cheaper and kick the fuck out of the EX series.

The EX's are shit.

there are some people who like the 497, but iirc they're extremely dry for such a cheap (ie, dry not full) headphone. for 20 bucks more you can get a pair of grado sr60s and rock the fuck out, and for 20$ less you can get a pair of kosses and rock the fuck out.

personally if i were looking for cheap phones i'd get the more involving cheap ones. this is really the greatest incentive for mobile phones (get the kosses), and for home use it's probably worth spending a little more on hd280s, sony v6, etc. to get the better detail
