EGM GOTY?

The IGN Boards are saying this. Can anyone verify?

"Game of the Year: Halo 2

Playstation 2 Game of the Year: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Xbox Game of the Year: Ninja Gaiden

Gamecube Game of the Year: Metroid Prime 2: Echoes

Handheld Game of the Year: Metroid Zero Mission

Multiplatform Game of the Year: Burnout 3"

They knew if they didn't put Halo 2, there would've been a riot on the internet.
I'm sure most Halo fans have finally accepted the fact that the game didn't live up to the hype. I bought Halo2, and I really liked the game, but I have now realized that I have had way more fun with RE4 than the Halo2 campaign.

Most Halo fans HERE. Don't ever go to Gamefaqs, where some people still argue about the ending.

The GA Awards were pretty good. But come on. MGS3 for overall GOTY? Nah.

I doubt that.

I know it must hurt to see a PS2 game as overall GOTY but the majority of the GAF members thought it was best so...

I agree with those awards. I love how there's always backlash, especially on forums like these, for heavily hyped and successful games like Halo 2. The game was polilshed, beautiful, fun, long and just so amazing in its entirety that the only flaw people seem to complain about is the ending. How trivial.

logical so far...

:lol

would have thought MGS3 for the PS2 GOTY though.

Fact is, there are at least five or eight games that someone could hold up as the Game of the Year for 2004. There really is no consensus pick for best game. There can't be. Too many high quality products were created last year.

Ninja Gaiden has been cleaning house with awards for 2004. Somewhat shocking with the March release of the title. Warrior Within am cry. PoP3 needs to go back to being what the Prince of Persia series is all about and stop trying to become Ninja Gaiden lite.

The original Halo was one of my favorite games ever, but I was thoroughly disappointed in the sequel. I thought it was poorer than the original in every single respect aside from multiplayer. I don't understand why people think its such a great game, its the bastard stepchild of Halo.

....and then no one will buy it again, leading to yet another sequel with a drastic art change that jaded forum dwellers will bitch about for months, despite the rest of the game being ok

PoP:SoT had about a week and a half more sales time than WW before Xmas, but SoT still outsold WW by Xmas. You need to point to me where the sales boost occurred because it didn't happen in NA. Maybe in Europe?

Well it's been between #5-7 on the UK chart since it was released, which is almost two months now. So it must be selling well over here.

:)

Yea, I can confirm those.

I wholeheartedly agree. And over 10 friends of mine agree with you too.

See, we've lived in a dorm for the last year and a half, where if you just plug your Xbox into your ethernet port, you're instantly connected to 8 other dorms on the same LAN. So 16 player Halo wasn't anything new when Halo 2 came out. In fact, getting a 16 player game going on the LAN or Live w/ Halo 2 took considerably longer with the botched menu system (which corner screen you get determined by which order you log in? WTF?)

I think most people who have an irrational lust for the game just have it because of hype and Live-play. But for the few of us who had pseudo-Live for a year straight, Halo 2 sucked ass. We seriously played Halo 1 for three hours a night two straight semesters up to November 8th. The night Halo 2 came out, we played it for six hours and then less and less every night thereafter. By two weeks, NO ONE ON CAMPUS PLAYED IT OR THE ORIGINAL ANYMORE.

All Halo 2 did was kill Halo for all of us. While we do have more time to homework, but it's Bungie's own damn fault for ripping everything out of the game that felt organic and natural, balanced, and skill-based. Instead now it's just a match of taking awkward-feeling jumps while holding two guns that are nerfed so much it's just a match of who can hold down the triggers longest.

Fuckin' sword was the only thing I had fun with. We also had fun trying to guess how many times the graphics quality would pop-in during the in-game cutscenes. Made the game feel like Turok: Halo edition.

Whats up with all the Junior Member Halo haters in here? :lol

Heh, fair enough. Maybe if Bungie had delivered the Halo 2 they promised, I'd be busy playing that and not spending all day reading a gaming forum.

Although RE4 put up a fight while it lasted.

EGM has a GOTY system whereby the game that wins the overall GOTY is automatically disqualified from the other console-specific GOTY awards.

That still doesn't make much sense, I mean you would figure that the game of the year would
win for the system it was released on as well.

I don't care about what EGM, IGN or GS says. The fact is: MGS3 is the ultimate game for this generation of videogames. GTA, GT4, ICO and RE4 are in the same level (it depends on taste), but no way Halo 2 or Ninja Gaiden could be compared to these masterpieces. This is a joke and a complete lack of common sense.

Based on taste, I think Ninja Gaiden and Halo 2 scored as well or better than all of those games.

A lack of common sense? A joke? Come on. These are genre-defining titles.

Based on taste, you can prefer Halo 2 or Ninja Gaiden to any other game. I have no problem with that. In terms of production values, creativity, gameplay and attention to details, they're nowhere near MGS3, RE4, Ico or GTA. And that's why they don't deserve the GOTY awards.

This trend among GOTY competitions is silly. I've never liked the idea of trying to declare an absolutely best game for the year since I personally get plenty of fun out of a variety of titles in any given year that it seems pointless to try to raise one head and shoulders above the others. But if you're going to do it, why pull your punches? Disqualifying a GOTY winner from being GOTY in another category means you're just elevating another game to a level above what you think it deserves.

How about dynamic gameplay design? :)

By the way, I'll wager that Bungie and Team Ninja spent at least as much money as Team ICO on their respective games.

Halo 2 wasn't cheap.

I'm not talking about money, I'm talking about talent. Money can't buy talent.

So...there was a serious lack of talent that went into Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden when compared to those other games?

Hmm...okay.

Agreed.

This is the kind of junior I approve of.

Sure, in all areas but Technology. I'm talking about art, story, gameplay, immersion, etc.

Well, but that's it. Enjoy your games, that's all that matters. I just think that the game magazines should judge the games based on merit, not hype or personal tastes.

peace.

o_O

They can't judge the game based on what they think of it?

They can. This is a free world. But it is unfair. In some years we'll see only EA type games because they are the ones that sell. That's sad.

I think Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden are the anti-EA. Scope, immersion, and fun. These games literally challenge everything, including the boundaries of the Xbox.
