EGM rumour: Blizzard developing MMORPG for PS3

If Sony doesn't get a slice of Blizzad's monthly fees then this will absolutely destroy Sony. At least on the 360 MS will at least survive on Blizzard's monthly scraps.

With Xbox 360 rev also possible.

Discuss.

It's probable, but not likely to be released for another few years. MMORPG's, especially ones made by Blizzard, take ages to develop :) Unless it's a port of WOW, which would be a nice move, imo (especially with some visual upgrades, etc.).

How exactly will this "destroy" Sony seeing how they don't get a slice of:

a) FFXI fees
b) Japanese KDDI game matching fees
c) FMO fees

Feedback appreciated! :D

Blizzard needs to make a next-gen Blackthorne. Man they used to make awesome console games, why did they go PC-only for so long? They could be a strong console developer as well.

Hmmm...I don't know. I thought that Blizzard was busy prepping a new Diablo while the other studio was busy with supporting WoW. Suppose it could happen, but not for some time...like '07 or so.

I'm calling bullshit on this unless it's a port of WoW. They're having a hard enough time supporting 1 MMORPG, and Blizzard isn't the sort of company that has spread itself far too thin in the past.

I think he meant; it'd be an absolute boon for Sony if they got a slice of the pie... that said, they'd have to be damn good reasons for Blizzard giving up a slice of pie to Sony when they've got such a proven track record... unless there was something Sony could do to expand the size of the revenue for Blizzard so that they'd be making more with Sony's help then without... although I'm not quite sure what that'll be apart from setting up a duopoly with MS for their console gaming portals that requires fees from pay to play style games...
Otherwise not having the infrastructure in place for this kinda thing to happen, or providing a worse infrastructure can prove very costly indeed for Sony, as the real age of broadband takes over...

-----

As for the game, I'd see a whole new game been much more likely than a WoW port; given the commitment to quality Blizzard has, they'd want to exploit the fact that it's based on the console, catering more to the style of console players as well as exploiting the gamepad's control schemes.

Also, despite their traditionally slow development time, given the new found wealth from WoW, they've been trying to aggressively expand (to meet WoW's needs... but probably also to increase the volume of stuff they can work on); They could do that quite well, while still lining their own pockets lavishly, given the 1.5 million subscriber customer base...

agreed

They should put WoW on all 3 next gen consoles. Then have them connect to the same servers. So no matter which system you play on PC, or next-gen. You could still play with your friends. That would be sooo awesome.

Since I'm not a PC gamer, I endorse this idea.

as the kids like to say on the official wow forums, quoted for truth.

they're having a difficult enough time as it is balancing one MMO, keeping servers stable, and maintaining the bare minimum customer service standards. unless they can hire a full team that's totally separate from the WoW team, you don't want a thinner Blizzard working on....well, pretty much anything. their hands are full.

I'd totally go for WOW on a console. Sitting on my bed > sitting on a plastic chair. I would also love to be able to use a controller. Holding my finger tips over the WASD keys for so long gets uncomfortable after a while.

I've actually been trying to come up with a good configuration for WOW with JoytoKey but, I don't know how to get the second analog stick working as my mouse. Can anyone help me with that?

As much as i'd love World of Starcraft, signs definitely point towards a next-gen port of WoW, with the graphical upgrades being rolled back into the PC version in a future expansion pack.

That should be a simple matter of mapping the the mouse to the analog stick assuming that everything is properly recognized by JoytoKey. Its been a while since I used that program...gave up on it and eventually bought a Logitch wireless Rumplepad and its mapping program is far more intuitive.

Dude I can just imagine Sony headquarters.

<Exec 1> Hrm, we are selling many machines, but software attach ratio is horrible. What is happening?
<Exec 2> Um, according to data, they are all buying World of Blackthorne and nothing else.
<Exec 1> What? but we are losing money! They buy no other games?
<Exec 2> No.
<Exec 1> Fuck.

If that were true... I would beseech them to have a graphical style similar to the one displayed in the intro, rather than what's presently in the game...

stuff like undead messing the flesh of their elbows and knees and feet we could do without... as well as the overall exaggerated cartooniness of everything.

Yeah, with PS3, Revolution and Xbox Live... Oh wait. Without Xbox Live.

Almost definatetly a port of WoW imo. Kinda like how Square-enix did the reverse with FFXI - keeps the user base high and will replace those dropping off, extending the life of game.

Given WoW's success, it'd be surprising if it didn't come to next-gen consoles.

I say: make it happen, and allow everyone to play with everyone else (PS3 owners with PC owners etc. etc.)

Blizzard and consoles don't mix.... Starcraft: Ghost ring a bell?

Blizzard made tons of console games before they started the warcraft, starcraft and diablo series.

you might be making a point ... if Blizzard actually was developing Starcraft: Ghost, and hadn't contracted it out to another developer.

That would kill PS3. People would play nothing but the Blizzard MMORPG and no other software would be sold. :|

StarCraft: Ghost is going to kick ass. Swingin' Ape Studios will make this one to remember.

Oh, and I don't think this is WoW ported over. In the press release when Blizz announced they were partnering with Swingin' Ape, they said that they'd be creating new games based on Blizzard properties. I'm thinking that this'll be a whole new game that SA will start from the ground up.

Fortunately, my memory goes past 1995. :)

-Blackthorne (SNES/32X)
-Rock 'N Roll Racing (SNES/Genesis)
-The Lost Vikings (Amiga/SNES/Genesis)

...all brought back lovingly to GBA. :)

I just read the article, and where are you getting "blizzard making MMORPG for PS3"? It says:

"...a handful of companies are eyeing the PS3 and Xbox 2 for MMORPGs. The winged one even mentioned that Blizzard, the new genre darling, has something in the works."

title is pretty misleading.

*ROFLMAO*

Thanks for the clearup!

It would be a killer app if true though (true in the sense that it was exclusive at first).

Damn it.

I hope this doesn't take resources away from Starcraft 2.

But that would mean Blizzard actually needed to be developing Starcraft 2......

It's the one sequel Blizzard fans truly want! You've saturated us with Warcraft games lately (WCIII, WCIIITFT, WoW). Get back to Starcraft and give us a sequel! :(

"if they put WoW on consoles with upgraded graphics i will buy it. JUST.LIKE.THAT. no questions."
yes, especially if it didn't crash as often as the PC version does for certain people due to certain fairly common setups (see ongoing WoW saga on their message boards.

THIS blizzard fan does not want a sequel to Starcraft. Blizzard has done enough freakin RTS games in a market that's already saturated with them. Bring on Diablo 3!
