Einhander

Decided to back to this and finish it. Playing on ePSXe and controls suck! Does anyone know how to save the game using ePSXe? I made a save file before starting but when I pause I only see the lives and exit options.

Game is really cool though probably the best shooter I have ever played. The techno music is also fantastic! I loved the tune that played during the Badlands mini boss fight.

^ loved that boss (err i hope the screens aren't too dark)

You want to save your game in the middle of a shooter? Come on now...

Still, since you are using ePSXe, you could use save states. I believe F2 saves, F3 picks the slot, and F4 loads.

dude my building is on fire! The hallway smells like smoke and that badland boss is a really bitch!

gotta run now.

edit: just came back up, small fire on the 16th floor nothing to worry about.

oh ok thanks!

One of the better PS1 shooters:

Good story and interface
Great music
Neat weapons
Tough challenge without the special weapons
Laughable challenge with the special weapons (only detriment I can really think of offhand)

not "the better" or any of that bull shit! It's the BEST! I got to the water stage in 98 (with robo spider boss) and the game was getting batshit difficult so I gave up but this time I am gonna beat it.

well, don't call it the best until you've played r type delta and gradius gaiden. but it's a very good, and it has a very distinct style. love the soundtrack too. haven't played it in years...ought to pick it up again at some point.

I have R type somewhere but I never played it. Those games are for the hardcore gamers though. Einhander is easy to pick up and it isn't as difficult as those games.

The best PSX shooter? I must inform the throng of my dissenting opinion.

The best music, I'll grant you that, but the speed of the game I take issue with. Not that I don't like a slower, more cerebral shooter, but the gameplay would have benefitted from a speed boost.

R-Types is the best shooter available on the PSX, IMHO.

Hey, Einhander's no picnic either. I remember it being pretty tough. Beating it was one of my great gaming accomplishemnts (right along side with beating adventures of batman & robin on genesis, Super Monkey Ball 1,2...)

R-Type Delta gets the nod over Einhander, but both are top-notch must-owns that I always have at the ready for another runthrough (or attempted runthrough in the case of RtD...).

Einhander isn't just a competent side-scroller though, the whole package speaks to the highest overall production values seen in the genre.

Ya
I also have Thunderforce V for PSX, which was alright I guess. I got to the third or fourth stage and difficulty got out of control and I stopped playing that there.

Einhander is practically flawless in its conception - slick graphics, tight controls and awesome gameplay. It's really, really fucking hard though.

Finally, you’ll come to a complete understanding of the Tao of Einhander when you realize its most principle paradigm: Einhander is really, really fucking hard.

thunderforce v gets pretty easy when you figure out how to use the freakishly overpowered "free range" weapon. then it gets hard again when you're trying to kill the last boss, who keeps running off and giving you the bad ending. ultimately, though, it's probably an easier game than einhander. better than einhander too, though the saturn version is preferable.

though come to think of it, the best shooters on ps1 are the amazing ports of donpachi and dodonpachi.

Wasn't there a water boss in TFV as well? i can't remember if that's the boss i fought or if it was in Einhander.

Add Satrun TFV to the list of games i wish i never sold. i had the special pack too. :(

Yeah there was, it was the first stage boss.

There's a submarine/robo-manta like boss in Einhander on the third stage, it's a mini boss though.

Yeah, I got TF V for the Saturn shortly after playing Einhander, and even though TFV is much shorter than Einhander, and easier (much easier IMO), I have to say that I've always favored TFV over Einhander. It was just much more... fun. IT's nice ot play and beat Einhander, but I feel there's less memorizing in TFV, and more instinctual/reflex gameplay.

For a second there, I was thinking you had lost your mind. (Actually, I was thinking you meant PSX exclusive titles.)

Despite never really being getting into shooters as a genre, I could one-credit Einhander, by the end. It was the first shooter I'd played since, like ... Life Force. Something about it just "clicked" for me in a way other shooters didn't.

yup same here.

didn't like this game actually. It didn't have the pizazz of Rtype or Gradius (or Parodius) for that matter. Dunno why GAF raves on about it so much. It was about a 6.5/10 - the PSone level polygonal graphics didn't help it (even then when I played it)

God forbid that a PSOne game has PSOne level polygonal graphics. :P

It looks awesome for a PSX game, especially considering it's 60 fps.

I meant during Psone days. Similarly I didn't play through MGS1 on Psone cause it looked so damn awful to me. :|

All hail to Einhander...

Nothing beats the first & last boss encounters... Love the weapons, especially the Flash & Juno :)

Oh, the soundtrack rocks!!!

Would love a PSP remake :)

Made me wish Square stuck to shooter. But Einhander and Internal Section rocked.

It's a polygonal shooter with abstract flat-shaded graphics a la Rez. It was also from behind the ship, also like that game, but you mostly go down tubes and had elements of Tempest. Plus you could create new levels with your own music CDs. I really fun game that only came out in Japan and even there it got lost in the shuffle. :(

I tried going back to this after DCharlie raved about it in some thread a few weeks ago or so, and I have to say I'm still not feeling it at all. It's just these terribly long-winded and dull stages where enemies that don't even shoot at you come flying down the tube every 30 seconds, and then comes a tougher boss that only serves the purpose of revealing the game's control flaws. It doesn't even really look as stylish as it does in carefully selected screenshots.

God its one of the best looking PSX games WTF are you talking about nin10do?

I love Einhander. I could never get past the 6th stage or so back in the day, but a couple years ago I pulled it out again, and miraculously managed get through the whole game in one go. But every time I beat what I thought had to be the last boss, there'd be yet another stage to whittle my credits away. I was starting to go crazy wondering if I would ever see the end of this game :)

i beat einhander with only using 1 continue. god that was such a great accomplishment. i use to be able to not die once but once i hit the 6th level, i'd waste liek 4 continues.

and i'll also like to say the game was insanely hard.

One of my favorite shooters of all time. It's also the only shooter I know with "boss A.I." ... it will try to mix up its patterns on you if it sees that it's being predictable (and hence, getting its ass kicked).

What I really loved about it was the ship and world design... the fact that these einhanders were ships with what was essentially arms picking up guns from enemies. Equipping those double auto-cannons and going to town was fucking great. Or the sword... or the vulcan... or the missles.... so good!

R-Type Delta is my favorite shooter on PS1 though.

I never had Internal Section. Shit, I need Internal Section now that I look at it.

Which Square teams worked on these two games? And where are they now?

Einhander is one of the few shooters that I actually try to go back and play from time to time. Given how old it is, that in itself is one hell of an accomplishment.

The boss music and end guy music have to be some of my favorite in game music of all time. I loved this game when it first came out, hard as hell though... made it up to the 5th stage, it got too hard, then used a Gameshark to see the rest of the game :P Should really go back since I've been playing lots more shooters nowadays.

Screw the haters! Internal Section rocks!

Okay, I know its not for everyone, but I still dig it. And the soundtrack is fucking insane. Classic Shinji Hosoe.

Good question.

Einhander sucks! I like that game where the guys in speedos go around shooting sperm at enemies in the quest for the magic dong......or something....I dunno. What the hell was that game again?

Oh and I kid. Einhander is godly. I'll never forget when I beat it for the first time with 4 or 5 people watching me. Proud moment and this hot chick was actually impressed. I stayed at her place that night. :D

Cho Aniki is the best game ever.

The "dialogues"are funny, although most of them are just trashy stuff. But when you encounter that third or fourth boss (the one on the wheels whos going up the walls IIRC) he says: "This is where you find your grave" (Hier findest du nur dein Grab). Awesome! =)

Though not quite as exciting as your story, me and some friends in college broke into an auditorium at night and hooked Einhander up to a huge projector, where I proceeded to one-credit it for everyone in attendance. Movie screen-sized Einhander is GOOD TIMES.

Hey FortNinety, do me a favour and link to my page when you post over a meg of my images, hey? Also while you're leeching the crap off my site, a link back would be appreciated. And while we're bitching, what's wrong with using the thumbs I painstakingly created? Or using one large image and linking to the rest?

For shame, FortNinety! For shame!

For anyone who wants to see my silly review of IS, clicken sie hier. The gallery is here. Also Hi! I'm NFG from NFG Games. =D

:lol

Does anyone have the MP3's from Einhander? I downloaded them from Ultra GamePlayers website back in the day and threw 'em all onto a cassette which I still have, but deleted the MP3's due to lack of space on the old PC.

BTW, what was the consensus feeling regarding Polyphony's Omega Boost?

Oh yeah, R-Type anything rocks.
