Elder Scrolls IV Q&A

SPoke with Pete hines about some of the elder scrolls oblivion stuff , thought u guys might wanan check it out if you are a fan

GR: The quick travel system is definitely a great addition for those who did not enjoy the long walks Morrowind provided. That being said, is there still enough exploring for people like me, people who actually did enjoy all the walking that had to be done in Morrowind? Will players still be able to take 2 or 3 hours just to wonder and find things that would otherwise not be found?

PH: Absolutely, because we only allow you to fast travel to places that you’ve found. So there are tons of locations in the world that you cannot travel to in the beginning of the game because you haven’t discovered them. You can only fast travel between towns. So the only way to discover those locations and add them to your fast travel map is to get out there and explore the world. And, nobody said you had to use the fast travel map. Sometimes I get the urge to walk to a quest location rather than fast travel because I want to explore some areas on the way that I haven’t been to yet, or I’ll only fast travel part of the way and walk the rest because I want to gather ingredients from plants or animals I can hunt. Exploration is still a big part of the game.

im glad that you can still wander around for hours if you like.. in morrowind i loved just aimlessly wandering and stumbling on to stuff, it was fun as hell

So horses, carts and wagons are back right? If I can still loot a town clean using the teleportation spell then sell it back to the same shop-keeps I stole it from then sign me up. I just wish the combat was over-hauled.

That is the shortest interview I have ever read.

I've re-typed this question three times in an effort to not sound trollish:

Do you guys REALLY enjoy walking around for hours and completing hundres of side quests and shit? The whole idea of an Elderscrolls game sounds abysmally boring to me.

morrowind had fast travel too, the Silt Strider. I remember first seeing that thing and thought i'd have to fight it.

Then obviously you won't play it. But for me, I love the rich, open, 3-D world to explore. One of my favorite things in games like this is to explore all the hidden corners and see what's lurking there. The devs hide some fun stuff out there that has nothing to do with the main quest, and it's great to dig that stuff all up. It adds depth to the world and story, at least for me. And yes, the side quests are fun as well. They allow you to build your character, find new items, and explore even more.

Nice read. Can't wait for this game to come out. I'm not so upset about missing the X360 launch since this wasn't a launch title. I may even hold off on buying a system until this game is released.

GR:We got a chance to look at the radiant AI feature from the video that was released on the web. Will the characters respond to you in terms of reputation? In other words, if you are known for thieving and killing innocents, will they run from you? If you are known for helping townsfolk with quests and problems, will they greet you with extra enthusiasm?

PH: NPCs will definitely respond to you based on your previous actions. And it’s not just whether or not you’ve been thieving or killing innocents, but also what kind of character the NPC is. If they’re a more nefarious type, they’ll probably be more willing to talk to you if you’re known to get your hands dirty, whereas a “good” NPC isn’t going to want to have anything to do with you. If you’re helping someone, or perhaps doing a quest for another NPC they know and like, then you’ll get greeted more warmly. Their Disposition towards you will be higher, you’ll get better info, or access to info they wouldn’t have told you otherwise. There’s a lot of different variables that can effect how an NPC feels about you based on your actions.

This has been in the series since Daggerfall. There should of been one question. "What new things are you doing with Oblivion that haven't been done before in the series and how does it enhance the ES experience?"

Have you ever heard of MMO's? They're online games based around that whole principal and people pay $15 a month to do it like suckers.

Also is you avatar from Animal Crossing?

It's basically grand theft auto, set in a medieval world, with a lot more role playing elements. Yet no one questions the success of GTA. I find the open-ended types of games much more exciting and fun than the storybook types of games (from Metal Gear to Final Fantasy).

Edit: wow I was slow in typing that response.

Play World of Warcraft :)

The only thing holding me back is this might feel like a MMORPG with only Npc's and no real players, thats why i hated Morrowind 3.

actually i loved Morrowind III, but that's cuz I quit MMO's so the game had the feeling of them... now I'm back to MMO's (WoW) so I'm not sure if I'm still pumped about this game...

I'll definitely get the PC version, and hopefully I'll play it

I certainly prefer it to walking around for hours collecting apples, catching fish, cutting grass, and using a virtual keyboard to send letters to virtual characters.

That's fine. Like I said, I wasn't trying to sound like a troll (though it probably came off as such), but I just can't do the "100's of hours of gameplay" thing. The idea of investing over 100 hours of time into Dragon Quest 8 is the exact reason I'm not buying it.

I have very little free time between my job, my daily responsibilities, and my girlfriend, so when I game I like an immediate sense of satisfaction. It just seems like I'd have to invest way more time than I have available into a game like Elderscrolls.

Anyway, sorry to rain on your parade. Hope you enjoy Oblivion.

P.S.

I agree about GTA. That's why I thought San Andreas was boring as shit.

AC is for guys who wants to unleash their gay side of their personality, it will get it out of their systems, so if you think of it AC is doing communities a favor.. not that I have anything against gay people :P ...

You completely missed the point of the Elder Scrolls games. It's not about the abundance of quests, which btw, it's great. It's really about the freedom to perform such objectives. You can virtually accomplish goals by any means.

Heck, every game is a set of objectives/goals/quests through a story that lead to an end. It's really how you accomplish them that makes, or doesn't make, a game fun.

Also, making mountains out of pillows is fun. :p

I think you forgot the definition of "optional."

You probably won't like this one any more then. I'd love it if Oblivion was designed for small groups of players to play together online. Doesn't need to be massive, just me and three or four friends.

Dragon Quest 8 is that long cause of all the optional stuff. I could rush through the game in probably 40 hours

That would be brilliant! <3

A drop in and play style where you meet up at the Inn for a quest and then say farewell would be perfect.

Yep. Exactly. Explore the world together when you have the time. Work together on some quests, and play with friends you know, not a million people you don't. This is the way some friends and I play Guild Wars together, but an Elder Scrolls game that offered this would be so much better.

the way games are going i woud not count it out for elder scrolls 5.. MS is pushing for online stuff in everything

Christ does every game have to go online?

Morrowind was a perfect single player experience, why mess with the formula. I am seriously glad Oblivion is offline only.

Except you move about as fast as a snail and get stuck on even more objects then in GTA. And it loads every 30 seconds. And there is no cars to steal. And the people are even uglier than GTA's mannequins. I can see it being fun for some but I found it incredibly boring.

Teh hella? They say nothing about the really big dragons that will be in the game if they know what's good for them?

'sup wit' dat?

Yes, that's the whole appeal of RPGs.

Oh what, you're not an RPG fan? you're a japanese anime interactive movie fan? Oh my bad.

No, not every game has to go online...but it's nice to have the option. Seriously, this type of game would be amazingly enhanced with the ability to play with a few friends at the same time. Internally, I'm certain Bethesda has talked about such things for a long time now, and with the enduring popularity of dungeon crawler-types, like Diablo II, the possibility has to be real at some point for them...at least, I'm hoping, anyway.

I would have purchased a 360 to get this game this month (instead of playing off student loans and repairing my car...and yes, I'm serious)

What does having the option for some group play have to do with you? If you don't want to play it online, no one would be forcing you.

Talk about your grade-A party poop.
