question! are you charged for having stuff turned on or just having stuff plugged in period? My electric bill is getting outta hand and i swear the only thing i've been actually USING is my laptop. I'm starting to think stuff like 2 home theaters and an unused desktop among other things in my home simply drain power being plugged in wether they are bing used or not.

Devices still draw power, even when plugged in & turned off, but it shouldn't really be that significant. (EDIT: dormant plugged in devices should only add like $20/month MAX) Is your stove or hot water heater electric powered, or are they nat gas?

Do you turn lights off when you leave the room?

I don't know where you live, but maybe AC/Heating? That's a pretty big factor... Also unplug everything you aren't using and if you are using cooling/heating, turn it off everytime you go out and when you get back then turn it back to normal.

Some speaker setups draw power as long as they're plugged in, whether they're being used or not. (I have a set of Harman/Kardon Soundsticks for my computer that does this.)

If natural gas is added into your bill though, that might be the culprit.

$20 max adds up for devices. my bill is bi monthly and the last one was 250. i dont leave any lights on. dont use the heater. gas bill is CHEAP. like 7 a month. main appliances are the fridge, dishwasher and washer/dryer. everything else are major electonics. i think the biggest culprit was my 2nd TV room. it has one of those outlets operated by switch and EVERYTHING, (ht setup, consoles, desktop) was on that switch and i never turn it off cuz i figured since the actual electronics were off it didnt matter.

Many electronics have the capability of a "quick turn on" when plugged in... Most guilty are the home theater appliances, such as televisions, stereos, and the like. A TV that is actually NOT charged - e.g. it's been drained, unplugged, and the caps are empty can take up to two minutes to properly turn on. (inconvenient for the average consumer) so many of them stay fully powered when in the "off" state so that they can flip on faster.

This has quite a large impact on overall power usage, and therefore your bill. Many power conscious persons nowadays are keeping the non-essentials on switched outlets, so that they can turn off everything except the fridge.

My mom bitches like a mother for me using the computer a lot (which I actually don't), and she says the reason why our electric bill is so high is because of using the computer. I've talked to a lot of people, and they say it isn't true. Is it?

Stop using the computer, then blame it on all her hardwired vibrators.

"BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!"

Depends on the rig....

My living room usually has 4+ machines running on 450 - 600 watt power supplies, plus monitors.

I know where my electricity goes...

Are you getting your meter checked or are they doing an "estimate". If the later, you could be getting the screw job. Call your electric company and get a meter reading done. You should get reimbursed anything they may have over charged you for.

Also, do you live in an apartment complex and have an outlet somewhere that could possibly be getting tapped into? $250 is fucking insane if your not even using anything!

Computers don't take up much electricity relative to other devices. I think it's mostly the monitor that will hike up your bill.

I'm sure that a regular TV draws way more electricity than a computer.

It's for two months... $125 a month is on the high end, but far far from unheard of.

Mine is $45/month.

500 sq/ft apartment. A/C set for about 76. I'm in AL, so it's not quite time for heating yet.

I turn off the A/C when at work. I have a $10 fan that I use instead of the main system fan as a way to drown out neighbors coming in late.

I keep my freezer full. I put stuff like bread, tortillas and nuts in the fridge to keep it full. That way every time I open my fridge, it doesn't have to recool all that escaped air.

My PC is a power sucking monster. 550 Watt Antec PSU and 5.1 Klipsch Promedias.

I can look at the history of power usage from months before I lived here, and people got as low as $25/month.

So either you have a huge house with the A/C cranked, or something is very, very wrong with your bill.

Get a Kill-a-Watt or something similar to find out how much power your electronics are using when they are off to see if that is your problem.

I have Kill-A-Watt. It's great.

My air purifier, which is on 24/7 on auto, uses 85w, spiking to 130w on high clean. That's about $12 a month. :(

Put a very large magnet against the wall behind your Electric Meter. I learned that in my ultraviolet dream days.
lol...thats illegal.

If you leave your computer turned on 24/7, that will definitely bring up your electric bill.

Considering the number of plants growing inside the house and the massive spike that would have appeared on my bill it was the least of my worries.
