Electric Razors: foil or rotary?

Personally, I shave it extremely short with a beard trimmer. Like, as short as possible. 12-hour stubble-short. Then I shave clean below the neck line with a razor. Easy and handsome. Repeat at least every 3-4 days.

I do exactly this. Brush a bit of $1 shaving cream from the can into your face and make some quick sloppy passes with a Merkur and Feather blades. It's quick and cheap as fuck, I shave every other day and it takes less than 5 minutes.

People act like you need to shave carefully with a safety razor (and especially with Feather blades) but it just isn't true and you won't get nicked or cut unless you're slicing it haphazardly into your nose and lips.

I don't even bother with shaving cream. I shave in the shower and use shampoo or shower gel.

Even cheaper

I wonder if anyone knows why electric razors literally don't work on some faces, like mine. It has no effect beyond occasionally pulling on a beard hair. I wish it did work because I use a new disposable razor every day. They get blunt almost immediately. I literally can't afford MACH 3s etc.

Although I can and do dry shave my face and head with no problems.

Is Dollar Shave Club available where you live? It's much more affordable than constantly buying disposables. Better quality shave too.

Many people don't do a wet shave not because they're afraid of cutting themselves or it taking too long.

I seem to have super sensitive skin and i've tried all kinds of shaving creams, razors (so you don't blame the dull blade!) and after shave balms and still, wet shaves make me break out.

i got a foil and a rotary. the former for body grooming, the latter for what little beard grows on me.

I currently use a Phillips rotary. It gets the job done, but foils are better.

The last foil I use was a Toni&Guy. Amazing shave with that before the foiled broke down.
(I haven't looked it up, but I'm picturing them as a gay couple. The kind that do women hair.) They might have gone out of business because I couldn't find replacement blades.

I've become a big fan of the rotary razor. Use the Philips Sensotouch 3D.

Rotary shavers tends to pull my hairs out somehow the foils (I'm using a Series 7 from Braun) are great for what they offer.

Yeah, I shaved after a shower a little less than half the time. My skin has always been fussy with shaving and moving to every other day was just too much for it.

Plus the hair around my jaw and chin is really, really tough for some reason so it takes multiple passes.

Has the Braun worked well? What model is it?

Is the cost of cleaning cartidges or whatever high? People seem to vary in how much they replace them.

It's the cheaper Braun 3 340s. Got it at Target for around $35 or so.

I like keeping my neck clean, but not baby smooth all the time. Using the barber style trim is good for only about a day, so need to every day. With the Braun I can get a neat shave that lasts me about 2-3 days.

This razer works well with cream and in shower. I just move it in a wax on / wax off motion and it does the job.

I've tried it and it is the same issue - the blades chip and dull after one shave- but it's also cheaper to buy a Schick Slim twins on sale- with better results for my beard. Ymmv.

I've got a Braun 790cc and I've got pretty thick (maybe coarse is a better description?) facial hair. The only thing I have to do is to use the built in trimmer (if I haven't shaved in 5 days or so) before I use the razor, and after that it's an amazing shave. My facial hair takes longer to grow out now ever since I started using the 790cc.

I don't think it's a scam, but I know it was removed from Kickstarter for violation of terms of use. The specific violation being that Kickstarter requires a proper working prototype. I think at the time they had a prototype, but not one that met with the standards that Kickstarter requires.

It was a scam. There were a dozen articles that came out explaining how it was physically impossible for the razor to do what it claimed given the power supply before it was pulled.

There is no shortage of scam products on kick starter from people looking to grab as much cash as possible from and idea that sounds too good to be true, then make a run for it and close up shop.

I've tried both foil and rotary and the latter doesn't shave nearly close enough, IMO. Could have just been a shitty razor, though.

Probably depends on the brand, series. My old foil was pretty bad but my current rotary is amazing. My face feels so smooth after a shave.

I find foils a little better than rotrary shavers, but the last time I used a rotrary it was over 12 years ago. A foil shaver goes up and down (like a brush,) you just change the direction for other areas.

Gonna get the Braun series 3 on Amazon real soon. The series 7 was recommended to me but I ain't about to drop 200 on it. The series 3 is $40 on Amazon right now I believe.

I use Gillette pro glide with vibrator, it does seem to shave smoother than the non pro. It still left some in grown hair which I find annoying. Anybody consider do laser removal of your beard hair? Wonder if that will save me the time in the long run.

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this Panasonic Arc3 soon because, as much as I try, I still cannot justify $150 for a shaver for the Braun 7 (plus the ongoing cost of the cleaning cartridges).

My hesitancy is the cheaper option being crap, though, and me being a $70 sucker rather than just forking out the $150.

Whichever one I go with, I'll update with impressions.

I'm happy with it. Granted, I just use it for my neck. First couple shaves are eh. I go about three days. Get good balm for after.

I use Nivea aftershave balm and dove for men shaving cream with the razer.

I have three shaving methods. Safety razor, foil buzzer, and beard trimmer. I do not own a rotary.

I like the foil better than a triangular rotary purely because of its shape. I can use it on my upper lip easier and there are some spots on my jaw I can hit at a better angle. I only ever use it if I'm being fast and lazy, though. My skin is light and my hair is dark so there does not exist an electric shaver that can get close enough to make the stubble disappear.

I use a safety razor when I'm doing a proper shave. My skin is very sensitive though which makes it difficult to use. Ive not found any foam or gel that works well. The only solution is to stand in a hot shower long enough that my face/hair gets soft from the steam. At that point I don't even need anything more than water, but that's the only situation in which I can get an ideal shave without irritation. My hair tends to be very stiff. Part of the problem is also the aforementioned light skin and black hair, I can't just go over an area once or from a single angle or else it is still visible. I gotta get in there good and go both down and up multiple times.

The trimmer is of course for when I let it get a little too long. Takes off the bulk faster so that my regular razor can finish the job.

I am jealous of people with blonde hair or a lack of facial hair. My blonde buddy can go days before it looks like he's unshaven. Another buddy who doesnt have a lot of body hair can go a week just naturally. Me? Literally 2 hours after the closest shave possible I've already got a shadow. And yet it grows in too patchy/sparse to just let it be a beard. There is no justice in this world.

^^ yeah I've got a similar issue, SN. Dark facial hair that grows in quickly but takes a long, long time to fill in enough for a proper beard. Thanks for the info!
