Electroplankton U.S. release... January 9, 2006

Any more 1st QTR Nintendo dates? Nintendo normally releases dates for entire season's at a time and the press site name/pass isn't working...

About time. I loved it, kept me busy alot longer than it probably should have to be honest. Though I wish you could install it into the DS hardware somehow, I think it'd be something people would spend alot more time with if it was something that was built into the DS. Let's be honest, it's not going to be competing with Mario Kart or Advance Wars for cartridge slot space.

Nice! It obviously wasn't going to sell very well during the holiday. I guess it's a good time to release it.

I still think it's too close to it. Maybe they should release it in February or April. In January it might still be forgotten from all of the people still buying late gifts or stuff with their money. Plus, Wi-Fi Metroid Prime: Hunters comes out in late January.

Forget March. That's Zelda month.

Uh, isn't Zelda supposed to be April at the earliest?

Hunters isn't coming out in January. It's listed as Q1. Zelda isn't March either, it's supposedly April.

well the impressions weren't that positive...

whose impressions?

I think this title (not a game) is brilliant. I've had it since... march or april. It is more an experiment than anything else. It will last as long as you find yourselft creating new music. I love it and I admire Toshio Iwai.

again beautiful beautiful experiment...

You play with it for about 2 days and that's it. The very definition of a novelty nintendo game. And I was very hyped about it, dig out my old threads about it. 10 minutes in, I was regretting my purchase.

The E3 presentation with the DJ was pretty much a good demo of what you can actually do.

I liked it. I bet in the US it comes in a hideous box and with no headphones.

Oooh! Lets have a competition to see who can design the most inappropriate box art for it.

NOA will win anyway...

I wonder if it'll feature gangsta rap and R&B like Reggie suggested in some interview. He didn't feel it was a cultural fit in its current form and had loads of ideas for localization. I'm not kidding!

Electroplankton isn't one of those "once and you're done" kind of things. I played around with it for a week or 10 days after I got the import in, then didn't touch it for a few weeks. I just recently picked it back up again and am messing around with it some more.

Electroplankton is one of those (for lack of better term) games where it's nice to have it in your collection when there's nothing else to do for five or ten minutes. Its value comes in playing it little bits at a time, instead of all at once.

And it's still as friggin' cool as it was now when I first played it.

But more importantly NOA, when are we getting Jam With The Band. The superior Nintendo developed music game with multiplayer!

They had a nice article in the newest Wired about Electroplankton and it's creator. I skimmed through it at the local bookstore, but I can't really remember too much about it.

It's the one with Peter Jackson's King Kong on the cover. Oh, Castlevania:DoS was the game of the month with 5/5 stars!!

It's not for everyone. If you have fun experimenting with music and such you'll love it (obviously). I got the most out of it when I bought a 1/8th cord from Radio shack, plug it into the headphone slot of the ds, the other end to my computer's in-line and record whatever I play, and then mix the music later on. It's defintely cool for things such as that.

I still play mine in bed, to this day ---- great to zone out to, after Castlevania...

interested to see what they do with it over here.

Yes, I'd like to know what about it they will change or add to for the US release. The Japanese version is VERY import friendly as there is no text in the actual game, and the menu screen was translated to English.

The only thing that needs translating is the huge booklette they include with the game.

I imported Elektroplankton and had a lot of fun with it. It's one of those "non-games", but it's simple, fun, and relaxing to make music with it.

I've played my copy the first day I got it, but haven't really felt an urge to play with it again.

At first I thought I'd be ok with the non-gameness of it, but it just feels so limited that it's hard to mess around with it for very long.

I pretty sure that since the DS is getting games that are actually good, N-fans can stop pretending like this is the best thing since sliced bread :p

I say it gets pushed back a little, yea. Jan 6th is a weird date.

And Zelda March?

Naw, dead season.

I say May. For the graduation present crowd.

I love Electroplankton, I have a lot of fun with friends saying stuff backwards and then having one of the planktons reverse it. Immature, but a lot of fun. Also, rapping with the 4-fish beat is cool.

I imported this back when it came out and never regretted it. I still play with it now.

Some of the modes are a bit dumb, though fun once in a while (Rec Rec, Volvoice). Some are frustratingly limiting (Beatnes, Tracy less so). Others are too random (ok, mainly Marine Snow, which otherwise would be very promising; also Nanocarp). But I really enjoy the easily controllable types: Lumiloop, Sun-Animalcule, Hanenbow, and especially Luminaria.

I guess this is a good way to decide: if you like the idea of an interactive art installation on your DS that you can make pretty, relaxing sounds with, you'll get your money's worth out of this.

It's definitely not for everyone. You also need some kind of creative impulse to enjoy it. I enjoyed it for a while, put it away, but a few days ago I wanted to do "play" something. Something relaxing. Not Ouendan or Castlevania or even Advance Wars, as those required attention and gets the heartbeat going. So I thought, why not pop in Elektroplankton again? And then I had fun playing making music with those widdle planktons. It is rather relaxing.

The US release should be budget priced, and I hope it has new modes :P I'd buy it again if it did.

That said, I wish someone would make a proper music making program - like a mod tracker, where you can store your musical creations and share them through wifi.

It's a nice non-game, although I would not want to spend 69 CHF (that's 44 US$) again for this. It was fun for about 2 hours or so and after that I put it away....

With an option to save music and at $20 (I doubt it'll be budget priced), I'll have to pick this one up no questions asked.

I tried this game.

It feels like a glorified Wario Ware Touched toy.

(That's generally a good thing, mind you, but I can't figure out why I'd ever want to buy it for itself. You can create a short lived loop of music...)

I imported the game after reading the other thread a while back. The game is interesting to play around wth and you can actually create some nice tunes. Hopefully the US version comes in the same shiny packaging and the headphones are included as well.

Nintendo really needs to budget price this. $19.99 at the most.... hopefully they learned their lesson with Polarium.
