Electroplankton U.S. release... January 9, 2006

With an option to save music and at $20 (I doubt it'll be budget priced), I'll have to pick this one up no questions asked.
Wait, you can save the music? Not being able to would be the only reason I wouldn't get it, since I've always wanted to create music with software that, you know, doesn't cost $300 or more.

No, I'm saying hopefully they add that feature into the US version. I mean they took so long to localize it... maybe they added some things? (hopefully) =(

Hell, with Beatnes and Lumiloop, you can't even save the music while the power's on :lol

If they tweak the feature set of this I will pick it up again.

What it needs is to have selectable plankton types in Audience mode. It really sucks to get Volvoice when you're in the middle of a reverie...

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread, the release info is back to "announced," which means we shouldn't put any stock in the January 6 date at all.

That said, this year, around January 10, Nintendo sent a press release with a lineup (and dates) for the first half of 2005. So don't expect any concrete information on the 2006 schedule until... well, January 10 or so.

I seriously doubt they added new stuff/features. It sold poorly in Japan and it doesn't look like this will sell much more than say, Ping Pals. It doesn't seem a wise decision to dump more money into extra development. I'd like to be proven wrong though.

What's funny is that the game was basically pure profit considering it only cost like a thousand dollars to make...

I'm another in the 'will buy it again if there are added features' basket. I bought it for AUD$70 and did feel a bit ripped off but I enjoyed it for what it was. Shit, it's the only "game" I even have for my DS at this stage. :(

For anyone who really enjoyed it, you should go to the GameFAQs forum for the game and there should be a thread about how to get SimTunes, another of Toshio Iwai's "pieces", from a Gmail account someone over there has set up. It's really cool, especially some of the user-made tunes which come packed in, and I probably am less disappointed with it because I got it for free.

Nintendo really needs to budget price this. $19.99 at the most.... hopefully they learned their lesson with Polarium.

That's still $29.99 in Canada which won't fly. Pricing for the simpler DS games needs to be in the $14 to $20 rang in the US, which make sit $24-$30 range in Canada.

That's not to say DS games are expensive. I bought Trauma and Lost in Blue for $55 cdn, tax included. DS game prices are low and with Amazon.ca's deep discounts, I get two games for less than the standard price of many PSP and home console games, which are regularly priced at $59.99 here.

hey for the ppl who don't want their elektroplanktons anymore i would be willin to buy it off you guys if you want. if so give me a PM so we could deal.

obviously you have no soul then.

Electroplankton has an odd dream like quality to it. it even nails synaesthesia as well as rez in its own way.

I am crushed.

I did spend just a few minutes with it, though... that might be the problem.

The idea is neat, but (unless I'm missing something radically important) it's essentially a digital musical instrument/mixer, is it not? Such realms have never been my strong point. I have nothing against the software, but I simply can't imagine buying it myself.

And if you think this game is fun for all of five minutes, like me, you're a communist. I know how it goes!

I understand why people love it, but it didn't do it for me. I spent 2 hours on ELektroplankton... and I sold it. Should've kept it though, as it's a unique addition to a "complete" DS collection.

old?

Shacknews has a very nice, in-depth review of the import. It looks like one of those games you can just experiment with forever.. I can't wait.

i think this would be really huge if it had some good marketing. i personally think that the best way to market Electroplankton would be quite simple and straight forward.

just have the commercials consist of nothing but footage. have a 30 second clip of Tracy, and end it with, "Electroplankton for Nintendo DS". do the same thing for Hanenbow, Luminaria, Rec-Rec, and Beatnes.

if at random, 30 second spots of either of those came on, it would have to pique interest. especially if they got a good amount of air play.

people would watch, and just wonder what the fuck it is that they just saw.

Electroplankton i feel is without a doubt, the best app for breaking into the mainstream as far as non-games in the US go. marketing just needs to be as straight forward as possible. no beating around the bush, no trying to make it look cool. just show 30 second clips, and it's bound to intrigue people and pique their interest.

it can be very surreal after all. im sure no one will argue with that.

thoughts? how would you market Electroplankton if you were in charge.

Getting people to buy Electroplankton and getting people to like Electroplankton are two different things. Why are you interested in the former? It's Nintendo's problem.

The thing about Electroplankton is that it's one of those games that people aren't quite sure how and what it is. So I see a lot of people who are eagerly awaiting the US release here, despite the many people who don't like it. It's one of those, "My curiosity will not be satiated until it's in my hands" kind of things. I was the same, and imported the game.

But it's also one of those games that polarizes people. I consider myself a musical type of person, and I thought I'd adore Electroplankton. I don't and haven't had any desire to put it into my DS after the first day I got it. If you look at some of the other responses/impressions out there, you'll get similar results. You'll also see some musicians and non-musicians who absolutely love what it is. It's just one of those pieces of software that is unpredictable in how it will be received.

(I will say that because I'm not exactly a fan, I'd rather see the project bomb so that Nintendo can fund other projects, instead of a possible Electroplankton 2.)

But more importantly NOA, when are we getting Jam With The Band. The superior Nintendo developed music game with multiplayer!

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

Goddamn it Nintendo, I've wanted this forever! You can even write your own songs! AND SAVE THEM! WHAT AN INNOVATIVE IDEA!

Why not get the import? It has some Western songs (though mostly classical/folk), plus Pornograffi, L'arc en Ciel, Morning Musume, ELT, Hamasucky Ayumi, etc up in there!

And agreed. Daigassou Band Brothers is one of my favorite music games. A must for any DS owner who likes rhythm/music.

What is this "fund"? It was made by a single artist in a couple months. There was very little funding involved.

i'll agree with this.

as much as i could care less for these music rhythm games, playing this with 3 or more people is by far the most fun i've had with a DS yet.

the expansion is awesome as fuck too.

Every review I've read so far states that electroplankton isn't trying to be a music creation tool, so its unfair to categorize it as such. Its more of an "interactive musical experience" and that's why you can't save your songs.

Okay, now that I actually know about saving music, yeah, I'll second the demand to release Jam with the Band outside Japan. It looked fantastic from some of the videos I've seen of several people playing...

Huh.

Did You Know? Nintendo's Musical Electroplankton Strikes a Chord on Jan. 9

REDMOND, Wash., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The artistic musical experience
Electroplankton(TM) will begin making beautiful music in the United States on
Jan. 9. This should come as welcome news to gamers and music fans who have
longed for the hit Japanese music-making title to arrive overseas.
Electroplankton, made exclusively for Nintendo DS(TM), doesn't fit the
traditional definition of a video game. It features 10 different musical
modes that let the user create melodies using the microphone and touch screen.
Electroplankton is something that could only be played on Nintendo DS. Its
dual screens, touch screen and microphone provide the perfect palette for
artistic creation.
Created by renowned artist Toshio Iwai, Electroplankton presents a
beautiful combination of art and music that unfolds in a different way with
every touch of the screen. Players might find themselves getting lost in the
melodies they create before they share their masterpieces with friends.
"Electroplankton represents just one of the many ways that Nintendo is
developing new kinds of software to reach new audiences," said George
Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and
corporate communications. "Even if you have never played a video game, you
can pick it up and start making amazing musical combinations with no
instruction."
Electroplankton, Rated E for Everyone, will make a public debut befitting
its creative, quirky nature. Electroplankton will be sold exclusively online
and at the Nintendo World Store in New York. It will be carried by all major
online retailers and at Nintendo.com.

Loved it honestly like a week. Its lack of save functions killed it for me eventually.

It was a great week though.

If only this was available for DS. It's one of the coolest sequencers I've seen, and if it used the touchscreen for the UI, it would be unstoppable!!!

Nanoloop
Crap, I want that so much... but $100?

Nobody's got any on eBay, either :(

Nanoloop 2.0 + Micro = (theoretically) AWESOME
