Elementary PSP MP3 playback questions...

Gonna go shopping in a 1/2 hour...and I'm thinking of getting a larger MemoryStickPro, along with a USB cable so I could put mp3s onto the PSP.

First of all, is it as simple as plugging my PSP to my PC with a USB cable, and just popping the files onto the PSP?

Secondly, does the PSP play WMA files? Probably not...

Thirdly, can you jump forward and backwards within a track? I have 80 minute mixes that I'd like to be able to even jump into the middle and start from there (hearing the beginning over and over gets tiresome). So can you jump back and forth, or better yet, jump anywhere into the track?

Thanks guys!

yes, it is as simple as plugging the usb cable in and draggin mp3's into the psp\music dircectory.

no, it cannot play wma files.

yes, you can fast-forward and rewind tracks.

the mp3 player is quite bad actually... it works alright but it is very barebones. You van fast forward and rewind via menu or the remote, I cant remember any fast jumps though. It does not support wma, only mp3 sorry. Adding songs to it is quite easy after you have figured out in wich directory to put the music in. All this is explained in the manual.

Thanks for the prompt responses guys!

Well...I do wish it was better...but I guess I'll take the plunge. If the Fast forward and rewind make it go double time (at least), I'll survive. I'll be spending 20 minutes holding down the fast forward button though... :P

if you were thinking of spending serious money on a memory stick just for mp3s, how close would that get you to an ipod nano, or even shuffle?

Still doesn't play wma, but you can tag your mixes as 'podcasts', then you can bookmark them in the player and carry off where you left off.

I mainly wanted it for the flight back home, plus a 512 would be handy if I ever wanted to get into the whole emulation on PSP thing. I already have a stand alone mp3 player at home but I didn't bring it with me. :P

It's a damn shame the W800 is not CDMA, because that would be my ideal mp3 phone solution. comes stock with a 512MB pro duo, even.

Got the stuff and while it's not that feature packed, it does a good job. Used Windows Media Player to rip my CDs and popped them on all there pretty fast. Dragged the folders onto the PSP so it's organized nicely...so when it comes to finding and sorting the music it's all good, but yeah the fast forward and rewind options...wish it allowed you to jump anywhere into the track. It's not hard to implement...I don't know why many players don't feature this...

I take it you have 1.52? I havent checked out the homebrew scene for a while but it would make sense if somebody ported over winamp or something similiar. The thing has so much potential to the point it is ridiculous.

I have 1.51 IIRC.

I agree about the potential...and hopefully Sony realizes a lot of this potential.

Because the way I see it, they have all the hardware to make the ultimate mp3 player. All they need is the software.

Most mp3 players don't allow you to:
-View visualisations
-View photos while playing music
-pitch the music up or down
-pitch the music with time-stretching or time-compression
-feature detailed graphic equalizers...say a 10 band one
-allow for audio effects, like reverb, echo, etc.
-remove vocals (tied into EQing)
-view lyrics for the song, or album cover
-allow you to sort the music and playlists using an intuitive GUI
-allow you to jump ahead into any point of a long mp3 :)

Some of these features, I'm certain that NO mp3 player on the market has.

As you know, all the HW features needed to make this happen are there, what's missing is the software.

So yeah, I agree with your point about potential. :) It's the only mp3 player out there with a fast CPU on it. Sony could make DJing software for it if they wanted to.

Sony is probably in no hurry to update it though...as the main purpose is games and such. Sony and MS haven't updated their CD players in their consoles either...they were afterthoughts really. But the PSP is different, it's a portable entertainment machine moreso than a strictly games machine. Maybe I should write a letter...
