Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

Great news that there's no wipe, I messed around with the Gamma when it was released, but I was stuck in the arse-end of the Galaxy. This weekend I'm going to start fresh with 100 credits, because it's Elite.

Is there any way to plot travel with multiple jumps? When I was playing the gamma I wanted to go to Lave, but it was a *long* way away, so I just gave up trying to figure out the galaxy map

Apparently they have a build internally with jump plotting working. Until that gets released though I use https://cmdr.club/routes/ on my phone and keep it between my joystick and throttle.

So if they instead made a Milky Way with 0.000005 percent (20k of 400 billion) of the number of stars it actually contains, the game would be less gimmicky? Sorry, that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. That's like recreating New York city in GTA using 0.045th of a building (0.000005 of 900k).

Around 160k star systems are mapped from astronomical data btw, not 20k, don't know where you got that from.

Sorry, 20k contains stations. The rest is for exploration, I suppose, but the game doesn't support that very well with the lack of hull repairs and the amount of NPC in the middle of nowhere. So what do you call those other billions of stars? If they had kept the numbers down a bit and focused on adding some more content in them, it would be a far more interesting game.

Literally nothing that was shown in that trailer can actually happen that way in game. This trailer is a lie in its entirety.

The launch trailer is out and it's a fucking insult. If FD made this, they need to be strung up by their nuts. This is in NO WAY representative of gameplay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLAGI-LdNyI

How is it insulting? That trailer is badass and as far as it being "representative of gameplay" I'd say it's quite accurate. You can do everything in that trailer in the game. To say they need to be castrated because they chose to go with a CG trailer is ridiculous.

You can do everything in that trailer in the game.

You can FA assist off turn like that?
You can fight outside of a station like that?
You can pick up cargo at that rate of speed, traveling non-linearly?
You can supercruise out of combat near a station in under 3 seconds?
You can pop a baddy with less than 1 second's worth of shooting?

Yeah, no.

Drama of the week uh?

CGI trailers, how do they work?

I don't agree with that at all. I have to admit that I still don't really understand what your point is. I don't see the logical sense in building a Fisher Price galaxy with 0.0005 percent of the number of stars in it, and it would take some of us out of the experience. Mapping galaxies procedurally with as much realistic data as possible has been a staple of the Elite series. Many of us feel that the "vastness of space" adds to the experience and atmosphere. If they spent time adding each star system by hand, yes then it probably would be a good idea to dial things back a bit to spend the resources on shaping the experience more. But that's not how it works (and that's a good thing). Once you've built the resources, procedural generation doesn't linearly demand more work hours. So how about the revolutionary idea that Braben keep his stars and formula intact and keep adding content at the same time. And remember that they already dialled things back when they were planning to have 282 Trillion Galaxies in Elite thirty years ago.. And now E:D only has 1 tiny galaxy left. Relatively speaking that's a cut to the bone trim :)

Yes, Yes, YES!

The vast majority fo those 400 billion systems are procedurally generated. So they only invested the time in creating the procedural algorithms, not handcrafting 400 billion systems. The people involved in the handcrafted systems and the programmers working on the procedural generation might not have even been part of the same team.

In other words, the game didn't lose anything by including those 400 billion stars. It gained a sandbox instead for those interested.

I think this is where you're going astray. You think that they spent this huge amount of work on creating these 400 billion systems and that's why there aren't more systems with more interactive systems at play. But that's just not the case.

I think Wreav is saying that the trailer paints the game as this actiony, high-intensity, tons-of-shit-going-on-in-a-small-area kinda game.

I haven't played much ED, but it seems like everything in the trailer IS possible--it all just takes a lot longer, haha.

It is odd they decided to go CG in the end. It is not as if the game is ugly.

So, I believe I committed a sin.

While I really enjoy the DK2, it's not how I see myself spending the majority of my playtime.. When CV1 launches? Fuck yeah, my face will look like I went snowboarding on a sunny spring day.

But I ordered an EDTracker from those guys who put them together (my soldering skills are about as good as my flying skills).

I REALLY miss headtracking when not playing in the DK2, I do have it mapped as a toggle for one of the joysticks on my X55 but it's just not the same, not being able to fly "topside" facing the station and looking "up" is killing me. Plus just looking at menus and such.

Hopefully as I get better with the controls and such the DK2 will be used more and more, but I need to see my iPad for things I'm looking at while out there flying and I don't use voice comms at the moment so typing responses is my way to communicate right now.

The game just looks too good on a monitor, I HDMI out to my 60" HDTV with surround setup and a subwoofer that can shake you out of your seat, so it's still a blast for sure ... but I just don't think the resolution of the DK2 does it justice. It's great for just messing around, but I hate having to lean in to read stuff, not being able to navigate the galaxy map well, etc ...

Again, will probably fluctuate more and more as I learn the nuances of controls and comms, but I, CMDR Flyinpiranha, owner of a DK2 just ordered Headtracking to play this on a flat, boring, 2D screen.

EDIT: Regarding the launch trailer, it's just concept stuff. It's like watching a Blizzard CGI boss battle and expecting that in-game. Shit, most of the games today are misleading with their CGI launch trailers. At least they said "Not Actual Game Footage", most won't bother ...

There's a difference between conveying the spirit of the game in CGI and dazzling people with things that you straight up will never see in game.

Look at Elite 2's in-game trailer. Entirely more effective at hyping the scope and majesty of the game.

- Fix Station Services menu losing focus when looking at the Comms Pannel with Oculus Rift
- When using oculus rift with supercruise the positional shift of the player's head can clip through seat fixed
- Loading screen spinning ship is missing from one eye of Oculus Rift fixed
- System map/Oculus Rift: Ensure the camera, which has a different range of distances from stars and planets when using Oculus Rift, can never get too close to them, by taking into account the maximum radius of the miniatures
- Charging bar and countdown HUD elements on cockpits moved to the correct position for Oculus
- Updating Oculus SDK to version 0.4.4
Nice :)

Hopefully we will see more tweaks for the rift.

Wait, so I just noticed there is some mercenary edition available for $50. I also didn't realize the game is massively multiplayer until recently. Since I have a DK2 I'm really interested in the game now. I'm a bit confused though, if I get that mercenary edition will I be able to play right away?

Not indicative of the game
-He landed without landing gears, ouch
-One moment he's not even past the clouds of that planet and suddently he's far away from the planet in space? Clearly breaking Newton physics
-One shot death @ 2:45
-Whats with the ships warping in ? Far as i know, you couldnt travel that way.

Here's what I reckon happened with the trailer.

A large proportion of people who are interested in space games have probably already bought it. By making the trailer extra dramatic, they might attract interest from people who haven't given it a thought yet.

It's not 100% in-game accurate, but it's not far off. I think they struck a good balance.

Personally, I switch between comfy couching 5.1 on my 40" and the DK2. I'd say I'm about 60 couch 40 DK2. There are advantages to both of course... and sitting with a DK2 on your head for hours gets pretty tiring.

Is your concern that the 'public-at-large' who may not have seen any prior released materials (of which there are plenty), sees this trailer and takes it as literally as you're taking it?

Sure, the trailer is heightened, but you can still do all of those activities (cargo scoop, supercruise, FA off, dogfight, etc).

Just bit the bullet and preordered. At the very least, early impressions don't make this seem like another X: Rebirth, and I just need my space game fix. :-)

EDIT: Is it just me or is the launcher a buggy mess? Visual glitches everywhere...

Also, there are probably thousands of hours of footage on youtube by now. If some people who see this trailer buy the game without looking up gameplay videos first and end up disappointed, they will only have themselves to blame.

Check the official forums. I personally haven't seen any issues with the launcher. But, I'm not sure how much are assets tied to being 'connected'. So it may be a connection issue.

Currently the game will spawn an NPC after a little bit of you being in super cruise whose sole purpose is inderdicting you XD

So annoying! Especially coming from the "you'll probably rarely run into other players" but having interdictions like GTA cops was aggravating last night. I just wanted to land! I had one with a player as I was coming close to the station and had to bust ass out of there, but then two from NPC's just trying to get back aligned with the station.

Yeah, for some reason my left eye fogs up a lot. Not sure why it's just that side, maybe my nerdy sweat gland is only on that side. But I don't like wearing it for more than an hour or so but I want to play for longer.

Bindings are reset again. I'm actually sick of rebinding after every major update :(

Always back up your custom bindings

c:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings You then backup the file Custom.binds, or re-name it. You can call the file anything.binds and it will show up as a new preset in the options menu. *edit to note that AppData is a hidden folder by default, you may need to type it in to the explorer address bar to access it.

But yes its annoying. They have to stop changing the full fucking client at every updates.
