Elite: Dangerous Standard Beta (Starting Jul 29th - $75)

The adder is like a Hauler and a NASA X-38 had a baby.

Man, looking over the LONG patch notes and reading a few posts on the forums, this gamma 2.0 patch is full of tons of little improvements to the game. Some highlights to me that stick out:

- toned down interdictions and fixed phantom instant interdictions
- added reputation indicators to mission summary screens
- added more sound customizing options, fixed some sound issues
- good amount of DK2 fixes
- added two new ships

But lots of others too. Really good patch.

It's almost like every other launch trailer ever made.

6 more days until the peasants (me) get in.

Yeah next Tuesday can't come soon enough. I have a dentist appointment next Tuesday after work that I'm canceling tomorrow. I brush twice a day and floss, fuck it, lol.

I wonder if they fixed the voice chat bug where whoever gets the voice chat call gets the ringing noise constantly until they quit the game. So annoying if you talk to friends in game.

I turned that in as a bug report about 2 months ago and they hadn't fixed it as of 3.9

The new main menu is sexy, look at the friends list right smack dab there.

Yep, reading through the list, there are TONS of quality of life improvements, which is exactly what I wanted from Gamma/Release. Lots of Rift love too.

Is the menu animated now? Cause that would be fab

Any good guide that explains the fundamental mechanics of the game? Hoping to avoid "well, shit, I wish I'd known that when I first started" situations.

EDIT: Notsomuch controls, as factions, trading, random events, etc.

New patch works beautifully in the rift. Loving the new supercruise engine sounds, and the external sounds in general. When a ship whizzes by it sounds ridiculously good.

Also, the galaxy looks a lot nicer now, more colour to it or something. This pic doesn't do it justice, but thought I'd share anyway

I highly recommend Kornelius Briedis's channel. He really digs into the nitty gritty of the mechanics and his stuff is super informative.

I haven't really been following the progress on this, but should I be excited for the full release? What's the overall consensus been like so far? I want to jump into this but X:Rebirth scared the hell out of me last year.

This is consuming every second of my free time and I spend all day at working thinking about it. It's absolutely fantastic.

X: Afterbirth can go fuck itself.

I'm sorry if I've missed this at some point, but have there been any talk regarding groups, organizations/guilds etc.? The more social features.

Q1 2015, wings are being added after launch. Will be able to see where your friends are, plot a course to them, etc.

Check the official forums. I personally haven't seen any issues with the launcher. But, I'm not sure how much are assets tied to being 'connected'. So it may be a connection issue.
The glitches vanished after I installed the combat demo as far as I can tell. Looked like some pixmaps were missing, but I have no idea why installing the demo would fix that. Either way, it works now.

Okay so "Wings" which I guess are Squads/Groups will be added soon after launch while other social features will come after in 2015?

I've check out a few videos on this game and I am VERY interested. It looks rather complex, is it fairly easy to get into? I am willing to put the time in to learn complex systems but don't want anything too crazy deep.

I have not been into space sims/dog fight games for years (probably since X-Wing/Tie Fighter games and Fury 3 years and years ago which seem like much more basic games focused on combat). I am so tempted to pick up a HOTAS and play this game.

Is there any way I can try it via demo? On the site it looked like I had to preorder. Thanks!

Have they changed the controls? I can't control the menu inside stations, only my camera and sensors are currently working.

Edit: Thrusters don't work either in the training missions. Nothing seems to work.

Edit2: Oh god, all the controls are gone in the options, and they don't revert to their default when I try setting it, I have to set every button manually it seems. :(

It can be very overwhelming, but I think of it like a sim racer ... people like me who don't tune, paint, etc ... can really get into sim racing because we like the cars and racing around the tracks and improving our times. While others will fine tune everything in their vehicle, spring suspension, etc ...

With ED, it comes in time. You'll first just start exploring, then figure out you can travel here, mine there, fight that, shoot this, etc ... the tutorials help, but it's fairly easy to get into. I did, and I never played a space game like this in decades.

Somebody posted they wiped custom mapping =( Pretty crappy, you'll have to assign everything. I'm glad I read that as I'll export and then import them after I do the update.

Isn't there a default option to go for? Cause I've tried setting it to "Keyboard" and only some of the buttons get bound.

It's not like it'll bind everything...I haven't loaded up this new client yet though, so I'm not sure how bad they borked it.

That's the thing, I didn't have any custom bindings, everything was the default Keyboard and Mouse settings, and now those are gone in the menu, nothing gets bound in the options while selecting that.

Awesome, thank you! That is a great analogy, I play sim racers in the same way.

By reading posts in here it does not appear I will do much damage to my reputation/account/character based on my own learning the game early on and just having fun, is that correct?

Nope, you can easily peter about the starting sector taking basic missions from the stations while you get your sea legs. Personally I think the UI in the game is fantastic and made it pretty easy to learn.

The game also has a full suite of tutorials to help get you up to speed. In addition they've been releasing instructional videos on their youtube channel under 'Pilot Training'.

Wow the seamless supercruise sounds great. Anyone spotted a gif of exiting from it yet?

Also could someone change the thread title? Mentioning the release date being so close could help with interest.

Well, my Gamma 2.0 experience so far is looking at the cool menu, and then staring at the spinning ship for a few seconds before it locks up and I have to kill the game via the Task Manager.

Fun times.
