Cali seems like an expensive and lousy place to do business. George Lucas was trying to make a new studio for the ST and Cali politics put an end to that, it was one of the main reasons he sold his company. I imagine working w the local big wigs is a huge pain in the butt.

Tesla is a tech company, if you want the best engineers you locate in California.
Plus I’m sure he’d rather the company be close to where he lives. The guy apparently still sleeps at the factory at times.

Sounds about right. I work in the office for one of the major automotive manufacturers in the United Staes. Cali is full of leftist consumer protection laws which all sound good in theory, but often times, there are a multitude of restrictions when it comes to how we're able to interact with Californians, due to said laws, that they often miss out on many benefits which we're able to provide others in different states.

I think a lot of people wouldn't mind leaving Cali especially seeing what they can afford in these states in comparison. Toyota HQ moved to Plano, Texas and enough employees moved to where it affected median housing prices in the area. And when you consider that this is a new automobile company worth more than Ford and GM combined, I think there is a sense of pride and future opportunities in the company beyond the disgruntled employees that get the limelight. People follow that.

It's hardball. Musk had already been talking about moving major production out of Fremont. I believe the cybertruck production will be exclusively in Nevada. This is likely a attempt to get CA to allow him to start production again. He must be burning cash right now during the lockdown.
It makes sense for Tesla to expand to different areas, if only to improve their maintenance speeds
If he does open his factory back up, will you be hoping people get sick just for a cheap "Told ya so"
Do you worry about the grocery workers, transportation workers and fast food workers, etc etc who are also working right now?
