Energy Breaker (SFC) translation release |OT| of Neverland (Lufia) SRPG goodness

About the Game

Energy Breaker is an isometric strategy RPG developed by Neverland Co. and released by Taito Corporation in 1996. Set on the idyllic Zamlia Island, you play as Myra, an amnesiac young woman with a thirst for adventure. The story begins with Myra being visited in a dream by a mysterious woman calling herself Selphia, only to meet her in real life the next day. On the advice of Selphia, Myra heads to Eltois, the Wind Forest, hoping to catch up with a man who may know about her past. Shortly after arriving at the Wind Forest, Myra joins up with Lenardo, an old scientist who's hunting for the Reincarnation, a legendary flower whose scent is said to have the power to bring the dead back to life...

Gameplay

Though Energy Breaker is a strategy RPG, unlike most SRPGs, you can freely explore your surroundings and talk to characters between battles. In fact, it's more like a normal JRPG with an SRPG-style battle system. The basics of battle have much in common with other SRPGs, but some additional stats, Balance and Energy, will give you something to think about. You need Balance points to perform actions, like moving or attacking, and you need to develop and manage your characters Energy levels for each element to unlock or use different skills. You'll also need to keep a close eye on your characters' life as well - the more damage they've sustained, the slower they'll regain Balance.

The game rewards exploration: most maps have hidden paths and treasure, and searching every inch of the environment often turns up useful items and occasionally, items or events that flesh out the story. If you're the kind of player that likes hugging walls and hammering the A Button, this is the game for you!

Released at the end of the SNES's life, the game has a beautiful presentation marred only by Yasuhiro Nightow's crappy art. Scroll down for screenshots!

The soundtrack is pretty rad too - here are some samples (track names from the patch):

Myra: The heroine of this game. She's kind of a dreamer and has a bit of a reputation for being unreliable. She uses her talent with "string-whips" to fight...elegantly?

Dr Lenardo: An old man who has mastered both science and medicine. Something of a mad scientist with a mysterious past. Fights as a team with Gulliver, his robot assistant.

Star: He might look like a weedy, fresh-faced youth, but in actual fact, he's an immortal with another personality lurking deep within. He uses the powers of his other self in combat.

Dorothy: An unfortunate orphan. Perhaps as a result of this, she acts rather precociously. She's not very strong, so she relies on Pygma, the baby dragon that accompanies her, for support.

Leon: Known as The Whirlwind General, Leon is surrounded by mystery. He's a specialist at fighting with a sword in each hand, and makes use of a range of swordplay skills in combat.

About the Patch/Getting the Patch

12 years in the making, this unofficial translation makes Energy Breaker available in English for the first time. It includes extensive reprogramming to allow for features such as proportional fonts, bugfixes and improvements on the original code, and a lovingly translated and polished script that puts it head and shoulders above most official translations of contemporary games. For more background on the translation, see the readme included with the patch!

You should be able to get the latest version of the patch at http://eb.yuudachi.net/.

I can't believe this has finally been released. It's been ages since I played the game, maybe I'll give it a replay with this. I know satsu has been working on it forever.

Haman Discharged... she smells nice
Haven't played an SNES RPG in ages, this looks like a good point to return. Thanks for sharing this with us, and to those folks who worked hard on translating and hacking it!

The OP is missing any references to Lufia, which I think might be a good link to get people interested in the game, since it's by a lot of the same people (including the composer).

Thanks jiji!

Just a quick FYI if anyone's downloaded the patch already - we just uploaded a new version to fix a last minute bug. (The message displayed when you use a Source wasn't working correctly.) Sorry for the trouble there.

I'd thought about that, but I wanted the game to stand on its own merits - there isn't a very strong link to Lufia short of the presentation and a couple of in-game conventions, plus
the cameo, which is more of a nice touch than anything
.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

Is it good? Whats good about it?

- Beautiful graphics from the end of the SNES era
- Memorable soundtrack (check out the OP)
- SRPG-style battles but with freedom to explore
- Story-driven, so there are a lot of events to keep you going
- Bittersweet story
- Most honest control layout explanation to grace a SNES game:

Neverland really don't want you to use that control scheme.

Energy Breaker?
EEEENNNNEEEERRRRGGGGYYYY BBBBRRRREEEEAAAAKKKKEEEERRRR!?
I'm so glad I can finally play it! Many many many thanks to the translation team! You rock!

After this one, all I need is Chaos Seed, then I can rest in peace.

"Worst control method ever," lolololololololol. They had a bit too much fun making this game.

Music is awesome, game sounds fun, and I'm getting some real Metal Max vibes overall. Time to get crackin'.

Well, I was talking about shared staff more than anything. But the game actually also uses some of the same instruments and sound effects from the Lufia games, which makes it feel even more familiar.

I suppose that's a pretty good point. Lufiaddict's post has convinced me that this is actually a pretty big deal. :V

Guess I'll throw this out there, then:

Never heard of this before, but
you can freely explore your surroundings and talk to characters between battles.
makes me oddly excited. I'd like srpgs more if there was more traditional exploration outside of combat.

I think you'll like this. Not only can you freely explore the towns and dungeons, but the game rewards you for doing so with hidden items all over the place - a few plot points are slightly off the beaten track as well. There are lots of invisible paths, too...

Yep, it's one of the things I really like about this game. I love it when SRPGs do that. Did you check out Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, which released recently for PSP in English? It's like that, as well.

I played this like 10 years ago. Glad it finally got released, I think I played it with an beta release with just the opening translated. It always seemed like an interesting game.

This sounds better and better!

Bought it Day 1 to show support, but I've yet to get around to actually playing it. :p I love the PS2 Growlanser games, though.

It's kind of annoying that the characters can only hold 8 items. Even in the village area I found too much items and had to throw away some stuff...
How exactly can I use grimoires to learn skills?
It says "Once you've assigned the right balance of elements, you'll automatically learn the
skill during the course of battle." What does automatically mean? I had the right distribution for the first skill, but didn't learn it after the "fight" with Leonardo.

I'm going to assume this game is great because it took 12 years to translate. I'll join in a playthrough, been itching for a SRPG, and I don't have my PSP with me atm, so hopefully this will do

Whenever you find an Item Box, it'll go into your inventory permanently and open up space for another eight items.

It's a bit like Romancing Saga - you have a chance of learning the skill during battle. If you have the right energy levels, just keep plugging away and you'll learn it. You might not get it straight away, but you will soon.

Did the (1.0) version numbering of the new patch remain unchanged?

Like there are any good SNES games untranslated at this point I think I'l sti...... (sees it's by Neverland).... As I was saying, this is probably an awesome game and I'm going to have to give this a try.

Just gave it a quick test run, you can pretty much interact with everything it seems? Not good, not good at all for me cause now I'll be pressing A like a madman haha. Seems pretty cool though if that type of stuff is throughout the whole game I'm likely going to be impressed that they/you went out the way for that type of stuff, it's something that's rarely in RPGs. I just love doing that to see how the character's would react and if there's more than simple dialogue...which in the first 5 mins, I was already feel rewarded

Just reuploaded the patch - there was a crash when getting item drops in battle that snuck in somewhere along the line. Sorry for the trouble, but please update!

Haha, you'll be pleased to know that continues throughout the game. Every single object that you can interact with has its own text strings.

That was murder to translate.

This game looks great, I'll definitely check it out. I love SRPG combat, but I've always been disappointed that they always rely on menus for navigation. I know there was one released on PSN recently, but other than these two games, are there any other SRPGs that allow free exploration of the world?

Albert Odyssey 1 and 2, Chaos Seed, and Last Bible 3 just on the top of my head

Arc the Lad 2. Play the first before it, but yeah, Arc the Lad 2 was one of my first SRPGs and it had exploration. It kind of harmed my enjoyment of other SRPGs because most don't really have exploration. It's filled with content too. Anyway, I'm pretty excited to start this up now. Seems like yall really did put a lot of work into it!

Honestly now I really think about it. Only this, growlanser, and arc are the only games I know with it.

I'm glad so many people are coming out the woodwork with comments like "it's finally done?!", it was a pretty long haul and I'm really relieved that people remembered it in the end. :')

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Oh wow I am so glad that this is done... remember hearing about the translation a long time ago and got a ton of recommendations to give the game a shot back in the day. Isometric SRPG by the Lufia team? Sounds good to me!

Nice job! Always liked the track "The Prayer Bells Will Not Toll" from its soundtrack so it will be nice to finally experience the context it is played in.

Any reports of text display issues when running on the PSP versions of SNES9x?
Specifically that the white text box 'behind' the actual text doesn't render?
