Enterbrain: top 5 Japanese publishers in 2004.

Enterbrain has just published the results of the home videogame market in Japan for the year 2004.
Overall, the Japanese market was down 0.7% compared to last year, for a total of 427.9 billion yen.

Game publisher/developer results:
1st - Nintendo - 7.33 million games sold, 28 titles.
2nd - Square Enix - 6.41 million games sold, 10 titles.
3rd - Pokemon Company - 4.34 million games sold, 5 titles.
4th - Konami - 2.99 million games sold, 6 titles.
5th - Capcom - 2.20 million games sold, 7 titles.

Game hardware results
1st - PlayStation 2 - 2.75 million units.
2nd - Game Boy Advance SP - 2.37 million units.
3rd - Nintendo DS - (final numbers not available at the time of the report.)

Not bad... I'm guessing Nintendo's Famicom Mini boost was enough to overcome Square Enix's DQ8 boost. And Pokemon > Konami.... though the number of games from both Capcom and Konami have to be off or something. They both probably released 20-40 games this year.
 
Just looked it up... the 2nd number is just titles in the top 100 selling games of 2004, not games released total. Makes much more sense. :)

I wonder why all these JP polling outlets seperate GBA from GBASP, but not PS2 from PStwo? I mean, aren't both redesigns that add features? :/

The number of titles figure is how many games were in Famitsu/Enterbrain's top 100 not the sum of all games they published.
 
Square-Enix should be even bigger this year with both KH2 and FFXII coming out. I wanted to see what their sales would've looked like with DQ8, FFXII, and KH2 all in the same year though.
 
Yeah, it is a bit.

What I suspect is that famitsu have produced a list of top 100 sellers of the year (based on their numbers) and this is based off that and not the entire market.

That would make sense.

Nintendo released 30 famicom mini games alone.

Should be interesting to see how much Mario Kart did this year. Another 250k+ I reckon on top of last year.

Whatever you want to call it, it's still a feature adding redesign. The only difference was that Nintendo kept producing the original model for a little longer, but even then GBA production was stopped less than a year after SP hit market iirc. The only reason I can think of might be price differences (Nintendo's clearing out old GBA stock at a lower price rather than bleeding the distribution channel).
 
It's still damn impressive from Nintendo though. Add Pokemon (RuSa, FiLe, Emerald, Dash and Pinball RuSa) and you get 11.67m vs 6.41m for Square (4.7m of which was DQV and DQVIII) which is a bit of a domination if you ask me.

No EA in Japan doing stupid numbers thankfully....
 
Uh, I'm saying Sony kept the name Playstation 2 for the redesign, which is why Enterbrain et al treat it the same as the older models (so it's just 70000 vs 500000, etc.), while Nintendo gave a different name to the redesigned GBA. I'm not debating whether it's a valid reason or not, rather just saying why I think they treat the PS2 redesign as just another PS2, but the GBA redesign as a separate system.
 
Anyone think Square Enix might be able to catch the top spot next year with FFXII + KH2? Or will Nintendo's DS lineup + Zelda be enough to hold them off? And do we know if Pokemon Diamond/Pearl are releasing next year?

KH 2 will sell about a 1 million and FXII will sell about 2 million. Anything else from these guys?

I dunno, pricing differences might be a good reason but simply just titling would be nonsense. No JP polling outlets counted PSone as seperate... in fact GBA SP is the only hardware redisgn to ever be counted seperately afaik. Seems arbitary.

It was cute seeing you channel Galian for a second there though. :P

Erm... not really. FF3 DS might be big? :/

Only 3 million from those games would be a little dissapointing though imo. DQ8 did that alone. :/

I don't know if Pearl/Diamond is hitting next year or not, but I don't think Square/Enix will be able to overtake Nintendo. FFXII and KH2 won't be nearly enough to combat the DS lineup, Zelda, the inevitable Mario Party, etc. Hell, if Nintendo is publishing that Jump Superstars game that alone would give them a huge boost for the year.

Anyway, I dunno about PS1/Psone, but these are the same people who treat Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 2 MEGAHITS! as two separate entries, so anything is possible.

Exactly. They'll sell 3.5m combined at the most. Less than DQV and DQVIII have done combined. This was the biggest year for Squeenix for a long time and I doubt next year will be bigger imho.

Nintendo may also struggle to match this year. The famicom mini series did about 4m alone (although they won't be counted in these figures, remember they are only for the top 100 games, half of the famicom mini games won't have made the top 100), and will probably not have a huge amount from Pokemon next year (Colosseum 2, Pokemon GC, the DS game maybe). Depends. Maybe Zelda / Mario 128 / Kirby / Mario Baseball / Starfox on GC will boost it.

I certainly think the GC will do much better next year than this. Not to mention DS games. They may get close to 11m again this year. Have to wait and see....

Radiata Stories, Romancing Saga, and Samurai Legend Musashi should all pull in some decent numbers. I'm not sure what DS games they've got coming out this year, but if they're FF of that DQ Monsters game they'll definetly do some nice numbers.

Not counting FFXII and KHII, I think all these Squarenix games are also scheduled for next year?:
FFVII:DoC, Radiata Story, Minstrel Song, FFIII, Haijuku Eiyuu Tai 3D (PS2), Haijuku Eiyuu 3D (DS), Drag-on Dragoon II, Musashi Samurai Legend. And Advent Children, if it counts.

They should have a pretty big year in Japan with all those combined.

Maybe a Dragon Quest VIII International:D

Nintendo formed them 2 years ago to handle all the Pokemon related liscensees. I heard they own something like 50-60%.

Kingdom Hearts I should have outsold Final Fantasy X by now (atleast in NA)

Kingdom Hearts II will do very well, maybe even better than FFXII!?

Don't forget the Final Fantasy III remake for DS and the Advent Children movie.

True, but you'll find all them on around 2m as well I'd have though (Sega Sammy have got 900k from Jissen Pachislot alone)

who knows, dq8 is their biggest game there though. even more popular than FF.
