Epic: UT 2007 might make PS3 launch

Mark Rein says game will be ready "when it's done," whether or not that coincides with the debut of Sony's next-generation console; will ship on PC first.

After several weeks of confusion about whether Unreal Tournament 2007 will be a PlayStation 3 launch title, definitive word on the status of the game has emerged. Ironically, that word is that the game's release date on the PS3 is still undetermined.

Following a report in the January 2006 PSM magazine, which indicated the game would be a launch title for the PlayStation 3, Epic Games has stated for the record that it only might make the console's launch. Why? Because, like most of the game industry, Epic isn't sure exactly when Sony plans to ship its next-generation console.

"Do you know when the PS3 launch is? Neither do we," said Epic vice president Mark Rein. The outspoken developer echoed the infamous tagline of his colleagues at id Software, telling GameSpot, "but we know when UT2007 will be done: WHEN IT'S DONE!" (Emphasis in the original.) Currently, the PlayStation 3 is tentatively scheduled for an "early 2006" release.

Rein continued, saying, "The question of whether we're a launch title or not is unanswerable because we don't know if the PS3 will be out before we're done or not. ... We won't ship the title on any platform before it's done, and it is too early to say when that will be."

Rein also confirmed online reports that Epic's current focus is the PC version of UT2007. "For now we soldier on with the plan to ship on PC as soon as we're done," he said. For more on that version of the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

......

this "it will make launch!"/"it won't make launch!" business is making me dizzy.

If PS3 gets a November '06 release in the US, I imagine it will make it. Spring '06 launch in the US (*cue laugh track), I wouldn't count on it.

You just dont get it, speevy

Good. I'd like to see the 360 get UT2k7, just so we can see the difference between the two consoles. I'm interested to see the EA games as well.

Is this true?

Well according to EA atleast the PS3 version of FN will be different from the 360 version. Here's hoping that the PS3 version has the animation shown in the E3 trailer.

SolidSnakex, I think EA's version of "different" and "like a Fight Night 4 instead of 3" is one new boxing arena and a cool new historic fight.

Only the inclusion of Mike Tyson will make me buy it twice

Why did you do that? :)

Should be more than that. Downgrade those models if they have to. Anything to make the animation look next gen like it did at E3.

My master plan was to capture Agent Icebeezy in my net of deception.

But mostly it was just me teasing sp0rsk.

should be, but in all likelyhood... won't be :P

indeed, animation is what makes many games/demos look amazing - it's what set the Killzone trailer beyond anything else because it was so believable.

I don't think downgrading the models is necessary to get better animation, it's a case of working on the animation joins, the interaction between the various different player models, etc etc whilst keeping the game intact and that's probably where the PS3 version will gain the most over the X360 version - more time.

EAs output on the X360 so far has been pretty ropey IMO, hopefully they can get the kinks out of next gen system development so PS3 launch titles and X360 second phase releases start to deliver.

as for "we will/won't/might make launch" - as they say, the launch date of the console is unknown (okay, they've said April - but....) so at the moment it's simply impossible to make the call either way.

I'm just saying if that's what they have to do to make the animation look like that then do it. At the moment with next gen games it seems like all developers care about doing is making games look good in screens because the second you see them in motion you're like "WTF?". Enough with the robo animation already. You've got systems with alot of power take advantage of it for more than textures and polys. Animation was what I was expecting to improve most next gen and so far...Nothings really changed.

I'm curious -- what does the power of a console have to do with animation that would make animation next-gen better than the last?

(serious question)

Thanks amir0x :D

And Tomb Raider. ;)

Although I'm starting to get a little pissed that EA is treating 360 like a second rate citizen.

Is it the developer?

Or the hardware?

We shall see soon enough. Madden 07 will be the definitive answer.

Oh come on! That's totally warranted. My balls were crushed like eighteen times man anticipating different variations of Tomb Raider. TR1 was like one of my all time favorite games!

Im hardly an expert in the subject, but I expect physics based techniques could play a big role in improved animation next gen. Not just in things like cloth and water simulation, but dynamic and adaptive character movement as well. Shadow of the Colossus might be an interesting example of things to come. What sets the animation in SotC apart is Team Ueda using old school animation techniques (drawn "by hand") and combining them with more processor intensive physics based simulation and adaption to create a very organic looking expression in a variety of forms. I could see this being a continuing trend in animation design, with more advanced physics based techniques that take advantage of the CPU horsepower, being further melded with traditional keyframe and motion capture to provide more seamless and natural interaction between character and environment.

At least thats what Im hoping we'll be seeing anyway. :) It'll still be down to the artists and animators of course, but they're definitely going to have more tools at their disposal with these high powered CPUs to create new and interesting methods. Also as I understand it just having more polygon complexity should further helps with animation since you have more vertices to manipulate, but I could be wrong there.

Here's the tech article on SotC translated over on B3D. Lots of neat stuff on the graphic design but the animation detail was of particular interest to me.
