I was gonna say the "extra second", but I guess that's more than 25 years. Bah. I dunno what the other two are.

Jordan comes out of retirement (first time)?

Buckner?

Kirk Gibson's HR?

Not sure if any of those will be there, but it's worth a guess.

Ah, man. I don't see the moment when the Titans were no more than a yard away from taking the Superbowl from the Rams. :(

If by "3" you mean "83" then yes, you'd be right.

I don't see any mention of the Oilers 35 point 2nd half comeback against the Bills. I say that will be number 3, Buckner number 2, Miracle on Ice number 1.

I will be shocked if a hockey moment is #1
The Miracle on Ice is not a hockey moment. It's an "American moment," if you believe all the people who wax philosophical about sports. It was the day the US finally triumphed over Communism. (Yes, ESPN gets that melodramatic about things...Didn't you see Miracle get hyped up as "the greatest sports story ever told!"...by the way, that movie was released by Disney...and Disney owns ESPN)

You remember how Rocky single-handedly ends the Cold War by beating the shit out of Ivan Drago in Rocky IV? Pretty much the same thing.

There's one that should be on that list, but isn't, and I don't know if it's a "Top Three" moment.

Duke's win over UNLV in 1991, it was the last time a team went into the NCAA Tourny undefeated. UNLV went to no.2 Arkansas' home court, and whupped them by fifteen. The Running Rebels were led by NCAA POY Larry Johnson, who was a force even in the NBA till he shredded his back and lost his explosiveness. They also had two other significant NBA players in Greg Anderson and Stacey Augmon. This same UNLV destroyed Duke in the NCAA final in 1990 by 30 points, and Duke lost three senior starters from that team. They had a five point lead with 2 minutes left when Stacey Augmon fouled out. Their team huddled together for the last time, as every starter was a senoir (except for shooting guard Anderson Hunt). Less than 30 seconds later, the scrappy Duke team had tied the game. Larry Johnson had been kept in check by highly recruited, but ultimately disappoing, senior Greg Koubek. Koubek didn't even start as a senior, but he slowed Johnson down just enough. LJ had a fairly wide open three as the game wound down, but as his confidence was shot he passed it up. The ball was swung around to Hunt, who forced up a brick. Duke had completed the improbably upset, while ever-mindful Coach K reminded his team they still had one more game to go to win a Championship.

If this were Canada ESPN, Miracle on Ice would be #81 and Canada defeating Russia in '72 (that's right bitch, we ended the Cold War 8 years earlier!) would be #1.

I'd say Miracle on Ice is clearly one, Gibson's home run might be number 2(It was top on the list of best plays, and it wasn't a good play...it was far better a moment than a play). And three? They've been hyping this damned anniversary for three months, it's going to be ESPN going on the air.

Game 7 of the 2001 WS.

Luis Gonzalez.

Actually, the whole series was easily one of the greatest playoff series' ever thanks to both teams' efforts.

Already on there. And the 2001 WS has NOTHING on the 1991 WS.

Oh, I was just giving my personal #1. 1991's a damn good one too, of course; Yankees being involved pushed 2001 over it, though, since both Series weren't short on dramatic moments.

I just wanted to note that now that we've gotten through number 2, two of my three guesses here were correct (Gibson at #3 and Buckner at #2). :)

#1 will definitely by the Miracle on Ice.

Damnit, Duke over UNLV was considered the biggest college basketball upset of it's time. The fact that Duke went back-to-back shouldn't count against how big an upset it was.

The fact that Duke has been the most dominant college bball program since 1986 shouldn't count against it (if THAT doesn't draw out SethC then I don't know what will). This game was considered a mere formality in the run for back-to-back championships for UNLV and an undefeated season.

As a truly brilliant fan wrote at the game, he had a sign with UNLV Dynasty crossed out to read Duke Destiny. For you youngen's, Duke was one considered the team that "couldn't win the big one." They made Final Four in 86, 88, 89, and 90 before this game with UNLV (along with once in the 70's and a couple in the 60's). In 1990 this UNLV team beat Duke by 30. UNLV lost no one, Duke lost three starters from that team. Duke ended up going to 7 Final Fours in 9 years through 1994, with two championships, but in 1990 no one knew this. This team beat the team no one thought could lose. It's gotta be in the Top 100. But it isn't, and it won't be no.1. That's a damn shame. This win was so much bigger than our win over Kentucky in 1992.

The win over UK in 1992 was a fucking AWESOME game. But it didn't have the upset factor, mainly because UK didn't win. Duke went the whole year ranked no.1 in the polls that year, but they weren't undefeated. That UK game had MANY lead changes, went into OT, had a buzzer-beater etc, but it wasn't a Final Four game, and it didn't feature a huge underdog prevailing over an undefeated powerhouse. The Duke-UNLV rematch MADE Duke what it is today. Because of that game, casual fans actually LIKED Duke for a few years. Duke was once the GOOD GUYS. That game belongs on the list.
