-Go back to a few hours earlier or to DAYS earlier
-install programs in an safe install mode where you can then verify if you everthing works then choose to save or revert back to your computers' status before the install.

Better still, don't use Windows Media Player at all - there's far better, less resource intense, more intuitive free options out there.

And the version of XP I'm getting is an Education version of XP Pro that doesn't require activation but can still be updated

I like Windows Media Player Classic. Use it for almost every video format except for a couple of streaming videos like quicktime.
