So is this game a must-have for rogue-like fans? I love me some rogue-likes (and rogue-like-likes, rogue-lites, whatever term doesn't offend pedants, etc.) and this game looks pretty interesting with the party dynamic.

Try watching the linked videos and if it looks like something that would interest you by all means pick it up. Seeing how you enjoy rogue-likes might be a worthwhile purchase.

Some tips / info. Minor gameplay spoilers. For the record I've gotten to the final superboss of the post-game, but havent beat him yet (taking a small break, it took a while to get there):

-I found Gunners to be extremely useful for regular exploration. Having a long range attack along with elemental shots helped in just about every situation.

-There are a total of
_7_
main dungeons before the credits with a few side dungeons. The game continues on after that with
_4_
more regular main dungeons as well as
_3_
regular side dungeons. Additionally, there are
_2_
dungeons with a special rule that you start back at level one with no equipment when you enter. You have to work with what loot/items/exp you get in the dungeon only.

-I had my main exploration team (Landsknecht, Gunner, Runemaster) max out their item loot skills early on. This means I got lots of pick ups from those spots, so more money and better equipment becomes available in the shop quickly. (I never had an issue with money)

-You can put reserve units in forts to have them gain EXP as well. (I think it's pretty darn close to 100% the same exp your battle party gets). I had a secondary Landsknecht/Gunner/Runemaster that I did not put item collection abilities on, so they would have more combat abilities. The idea was to swap to this team for boss fights and such, but honestly I didn't really need to despite 10 skill points allocated to abilities useless in combat on my main team.

-I had a third team (Hexer, Dancer, Wanderer, Ninja) used mostly as my fort squad. When you encounter a DOE at a fort, your 4-man exploration team and your stationed 4-man squad at the fort team up to take the DOE on. This is honestly a pretty sure-fire way to beat these buggers.

-Some of the later dungeons have ~8 DOEs floating around, which if you want to go down the dungeon normally, can be a huge headache. What I did was create a fort at the top-most floor, and waited for DOEs to come to me. It takes some time, but clearing them out before actually trying to get to the bottom makes things a lot less frustrating.

Have fun.

Have the game pre-ordered, should pick it up tomorrow. Hopefully I can get the natural flow of this game down. I have have more success with MD games than EO games.

Thanks for the tips, Seda.

That sounds awesome.

What was your 'Normal" Party for exploring/doing quest stuff? Protector/Medic/Land/Gunner?

Landsknecht, Gunner, Runemaster, Medic.

I very rarely used Protectors, actually. Only on one of the post-game bosses.

EDIT: Another quick tip. Don't forgot to always have an escape thread in your bag. Early on I forgot to replace one I used, and then I fell in an ambush. (this was like in the second dungeon before I really knew what I was doing). Since then I've always been able to escape whenever things got hairy, and avoid the costly penalties associated with a party wipe.
Later on you can buy an item for a similar effect with bosses, which helps when you want to get to know them and not fear dying

Btw went and updated the OT with a reviews section. You can all find it between the FAQ and Online Stores section.

Here's a slightly more concrete(?) non-answer for you about the EU version. A bunch of hurdles have been cleared and we have a publishing partner locked in. I think they're announcing in the next few weeks, but it's not my place to step on their toes. Hang tight!

No idea what that means for the EU release though :(

Nice write up, any comment on how the mentioned dungeons stack up to Fay's Final Puzzle from Shiren?

Sigh... I canceled my Amazon order for this.

...because my local GameStop had an extra copy, and I got it reserved.

God bless all my old friends/And god bless me too, why pretend?
Honestly can't wait for this. Is there anything on how long this is so I can budget my time for this

I am also curious to the length. Any ideas?

I have it preordered from Bestbuy, it should be here in like 2-3 days. Can't wait!

Couldn't tell you, I've never played Shiren actually. One of the dungeons is mostly a warmup and I cleared it with ease. The second I ended up running out of MP which ultimately lead me to quit. Havent had a chance to try it again yet.

Unfortunately the game doesn't have a clock. I figure I spent about 25 hours getting to the credits and about 20 past that, but the error bars on that are probably wide.

Oh that isn't too bad then. Fantastic

This game is refreshing after playing Etrian Odyssey IV, seeing the new places, new characters, and new music.

Went through the first 2 dungeons, some quests, and this game is fun, yet challenging.

The game somehow have been leaked since five days ago in my country. It's funny since we don't have any official presence of Atlus nor Nintendo here.

I'm just posting again to help deal with all the hype.

So much hype.

The only thing that could top this game-wise, this year, would be an announcement that Atlus is giving the U.S. back the excluded 1/3 of the dungeons in EO2 as early buyer incentive.

I don't think they'd do that but man, it would be amazing.

I'm missing a good mystery dungeon title and despite having no previous Etrian experience the overall vibe of this game has me quite keen to play it. Gosh darn region lock! They should hurry up with that PAL region announcement.

I really wish my 3DS wasn't broken right now, or I would've had this preordered weeks ago. Oh well, I'm looking forward to the impressions from everyone.

Is it me but does some of the character art/portraits look different than past EO games?
I forgot who it was (I'm pretty sure they're from Chunsoft), but all of the art was redrawn.

Got it early (thank you videogamesplus), will start it up in an hour and play a bit.

I'm not thaaat hyped for this but it should be fun while waiting for Xenoblade 3D

So it's not the usual EO artist?

Nachos is correct. The character designs are from Spike Chunsoft's Hasegawa Kaoru.

Does Gamestop still call for pre-orders with the automated thing, or with a game this small do you have to wait until the store gets shipment and such. They said they would have it today when I pre-ordered, just curious if anyone has any recent experience.
