Got Vanquish and was thinking about getting Yakuza 4. Do i need to play the previous games to follow the story of 4?

not really. Yakuza 4 is a great place to start. Its also the best game of the series.
If you feel brave, try 3 first. A better place to start, even if the game have pacing issue and a slow start
