Interesting long interview with SCS CEO http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTkh5Vijxqg

I'm just getting started with it, supposedly will talk about upcoming releases.

'World of Trucks' umbrella, American Truck Sim coming.

Massive AI update right around the corner, will make a huge change on AI driver behaviour.

Oh I guess I missed American Truck Sim screens uploaded!

2 main things i want is pedestrians and driver hands in cockpit view. The pedestrians can do that thing they do in some car games where they always move out of the way.

The interview was fascinating. They made ETS2 on like a 10 man staff. They've now moved on to about 30 people and moved offices, but still struggle to 'deal with the success' as he says. Took too long time to develop DLC, still takes a long time with this number of staff.

They're going to release American Truck Sim in installments and with a 'Minecraft model', not DLC. So you buy an early version and you get the stuff added to the game later for free.

Reason is it would take way too long to finish the whole game without any revenue. So within MONTHS from now we'll get the first bit of American Truck Simulator, namely the California region. The game is fully loaded with the kind of features we have in ETS2 but more regions of North America will be added on later.

Can't watch the interview, but I'm hoping they'll add some routes over the Rocky mountains. Also hoping the cities will be a bit larger this time around. There weren't many roads in ETS2 that seemed to really challenge the truck driving aspect and I know getting around tight backroads in the smaller cities has got to be a pain for real life truckers.

They should use the community to help fill out the US.

They already got the groundwork done of the entire US, Canada and Mexico in 18 Wheels: American Long Haul.

Before I ask this question, I want to stress that I'm NOT having a dig at SCS at all.

I'm curious how long it took the mod makers to make the map expansion for ETS2 - and how many people were involved. Because if it is taking SCS over a year to make the dlc for this game, how did the mod makers manage? Was it a community effort of some sort?

The quality is much lower.

But the ProMods Scandinavia mod apparently took like 10 months or something as well.

Can't see it in the trailer but most exciting feature: " Many kilometers of challenging narrow roads, mountain passes, and roads under repair to test your driving skill"

I don't even play as much as I should (for its soothing effect on my soul) but this new stuff seems really great. And yes it is very successful, still gets like 1500-2000 players a day.

Edit: Also, regarding the speed of SCS making the DLC, keep in mind they are interacting with a lot of people now, trying to take all the information they get and filter/organize it to be useful, and incorporate it into updates for ETS2, making the DLC what it should be, and making American Truck Sim at the same time. They are still a small team, so this is probably difficult to do. American Truck Sim in particular would have its own set of challenges and decisions to be made about how to handle it as American trucks are different so you need new contracts and spec/design research and there is a ton of varying landscapes and famous cities and fragile American egos you want to handle well.

Edit 2: Speaking of American stuff in nice European simulator games, it would be cool to get some American stuff in Farming Simulator. I grew up on the edge of town kind of half ghetto/half farm, so I'm like "yeah, let's do some farming" but then it's not the equipment I know. A small thing, but it would be neat.

I finished the interview videos and wow, there really is a lot on their plate in many senses. It's not just from expanding projects, but in the sense of continuity in the midst of reformatting map data for better development, expansion, and compatibility with the community all at once. It's great to hear how much they care about the community and want to both provide what the community wants and not wreck the community's own work or save files at the same time. I hope the series continues to be successful and can expand in all these ideas that are continuing to come up. Their unique business situation is also very interesting.

Yes, seems like a level-headed guy with the right ideas, the righ motivation - although still pretty stressed about single-handedly making the truck sim genre mainstream.

'going east!' dlc is now available on steam - $12.99 USD. i just delivered 20 tons of acid to warsaw. beautiful mountains along the way. i'm not sure if it's worth it yet for a few new cities and trucks as i never (well, not yet at least) got into mods, but it's delightfully pretty so far. there's a dead-on mini cooper in the AI traffic that i think is new, at least.

Best thing about American Truck Simulator: FUCK YO KILOMETERS

They'll probably go into Canada :(

I guess the patch that updated yesterday was to get the game ready for the dlc then.

Tempted to get the dlc but wonder if it works fine with the map pack addon listed on the front page?

Yeah, I just got back from vacation and saw that the DLC is now available. I would have bought it a few months ago, but now that I've discovered TSM map pack I think I'll hold off until a sale or something. I mean I'm still exploring the new roads and cities of TSM. Eventually I'll get it though, as I'm sure the map packs will be updated to work with the DLC eventually anyway.

I noticed in the expansion trailer it seems to feature some really nice looking cities.

So far all I've seen in the vanilla version are small towns, and even the largest towns just lack the 'feel'.

I find it relaxing to not take any missions and just drive around with rain probability on max. I would like to drive through some nice scenery and so far all I'm seeing are the same repeated scenery, which I don't blame. The cockpit view of the truck also feels claustrophobic. It would be nice if there is a mod car with much lower view.

Are there any distinctive places in the vanilla version? I want to drive to these places.

Also, are there any mods to use a normal car, or at least a vehicle with a lower view in cockpit?

Btw I drive a military tonner myself, so it's not I'm not used to it. I just want to play this game to relax :).

I agree that the small towns are a disappointment. I would have much preferred DLC to have been expanded towns to be honest, with recognisable landmarks. But in my travels I have found some cool mountain roads, a crashed plane..etc etc. But for the life of me I can't recall where as the map is so big.

But a quick google throws up this mod to drive a BMW in the game - which would give you the lower down view that you want.

http://ets2.lt/en/bmw-x6-passengers-mod/

And a video of it in action. Must admit I fancy trying it myself.

Oh cool, I thought most of the car mods are for external traffic so didn't see this.

I can't find a nice summary of what is Truck Sim Map about. Are there more varied environments? (Hope so, the default environment keeps repeating.)

Also, I'm wondering if there are any mods to include more like a downtown city instead of sparse towns, haha.

I'll be frank, it will be great if this game could turn into Ridge Racer kind of environments, but with normal driving. Then I'll just play some music and drive in the night.

So what are everyone's favourite journeys? Mine are:

Kassel to Munchen - a combination of one of the twistiest roads, that turn into widest and fastest autobahns in the game

Bern to Torino - dizzying heights, narrow zigzagging roads and spectacular scenery

Newcastle to Aberdeen - rivers, bridges (Forth et al) and lovely scenery

Any others you particularly like?

The v1.6 update is now available via Steam, and includes a new photo mode, and (some very preliminary) World of Trucks profile integration (avatars, custom license plates and whatnot).

More info from SCS in this blog post.

With that, I'm off to deliver apples to Amsterdam.

Ooohh, I wonder what photo mode is? I hope it allows us to easily pause the game for screenshots, that would be freaking awesome. More importantly, I wonder if v1.6 is compatible with TSM 3.5, the map mod?

One way to find out I guess, I'll update tonight and try it out.

Can somebody explain to me what World of Trucks is?

A layer on top of the game in the form of a web site. It will be a unified account for Euro Truck, American Truck, other potential future trucking expansions from SCS.

So far in its alpha state it's simple, allows you to modify your truck, share pictures from the new mode with the community, stuff like that. However SCS has detailed a future where you can run virtual trucking companies with friends forming a crew of truckers, real co-op stuff. It's a very promising idea for taking trucking to the next level.

Wound up getting this when it was on sale the other day and am already near 10 hours logged on it. Almost have enough set aside to buy a truck. Been avoiding a loan as I just don't want to go that route. Good fun, though it's infuriating getting stuck on a single lane road with everyone going half the posted speed limit. Granted it makes for some particularly daring overtakes as I try to pass 2 or 3 vehicles while driving into oncoming traffic. =p

Just bought this. Counting trucks on the road was a past time when i was a kid going on roadtrips. Always hoping there wouls be more Scanias but there was always more Mercedes trucks.

Speaking of that, shame they haven't gotten the Actros in the game, would be fun. Also, i've seen my Scanias, but what's up with only having the R series? What about the G, P and T series?

Also, having a monster of a truck like the R730 hauling only 25 tons is kind of a joke. Where i live (Brazil) you have some R420 and R440's hauling over 50 tons on those articulated trailers that i think are only used in a few countries. Some trucks here are 30 meter long, i'm yet to find those in the game.

It's so awesome, i love this game... it seems dull, but i just love it!

I bought it hours ago from Humble Store....
I am playing this game for hours. Damn. It's such fun!
I've set my xbox gamepad to allow everything - I was lost too - I couldn't bind some stuff, but figured it out sooner than later.
LT, RT and right sticks are axis. Pressure sensitive. All ou have to do is bind it at the wheel menu - where you can set kb/m + gamepad/joy/wheel.

I kinda can't wait to play more tomorrow - after dispatching 8 trucks with real people driving to Germany.
This gives me insight on how they work and I can appreciate them more.

Yeah, the game is so much more addicting than it would appear to be. I love it to death, one of my absolute favorite sit down and relax yet be entertained games.

Yeah - now I know first hand what the fuzz was about! Really chill game.
I was listening to radios from Germany, Netherlands and UK. I can see myself losing more than bunch of hours in this game.

New game - new homepages to visit -

this was on SCS' blog post -

DAN BULLS ETS2 RAP

Bought it today, and I have a lot of respect for these truck drivers. It's such a pain to get into traffic, and more of a pain to back it up. Started in Aberdeen, been to Edinburgh, Glasgow, Carlisle, and I've been across the sea to Rotterdam. I also have Frankfurt-am-Main unlocked thanks to a truck dealer email.

Yay, I'm learning UK geography!

I have an official Microsoft steering wheel for 360. Would that work with this game on PC?

And, if it doesn't, what's a good option?

Actually, even if it does work, what's a good PC steering wheel for a reasonable price?

Just to clarify. I initially installed TS Map pack 3.5 mentioned on the first page of this thread, and the latest version is that 4.1.2 on that linked page above, and it works with Going East? It is a replacement file, or an addition? Thanks.

Who else has been playing this all weekend after picking it up on sale?

I haven't had this much fun gaming for a long time.

I bought it a few months back and have put over 100 hours into it so far. I love discovering new radio stations while driving along. There are some great ones out there, especially ones that cater to my classic rock needs :)

I'm loving the Going East DLC coupled with TSM 4.1 map pack, there's so many new cities that I don't even know where to start!

The new photo camera mode thing is awesome, makes it so much easier to take good pictures now:

I bought a new Iveco Hi-Way truck, and gave it one of the Halloween paint jobs that I got cheap during the Steam sale:

I'll be playing this game years from now, I can just see it...and I'm okay with that!
