There doesn't have to be any secret sauce for it to be 1080p capable. Smash 4 was 1080p on the Wii U. A straight port of that could be rendered at 1080p on Switch regardless of whether or not it's docked.

It seems many people in this thread hear 720p screen and assume the GPU cannot render at anything higher. That is incorrect. Graphical resolution is NOT a hardware spec/

PS4 and XB1 have trouble hitting 1080p for some games too. What in the world makes anyone think a Nintendo portable could do what those two could not??

If Sony or MS comes out with a portable console that can render demanding AAA games (that XB1 and PS4 cannot) at 1080p with more than 3 hours of battery then you might have a point. But that isn't happening.

Also as I pointed out above, the Switch is absolutely a 1080p capable console. I don't understand why people are saying otherwise...

Low res screen, but still not a deal breaker for me lol. Hopefully it will be priced fairly and I can buy it right away!

About the only thing that makes sense is that since resistive screens are all but extinct nowadays the prevalence of capacitive multitouch displays in smartphones made them more cost effective then trying to find a resistive display at acceptable modern res that was at high enough production capacity. Multitouch is more bullet-point list filler than a useful feature within their intended usage scenarios on this device then.

I'm not. I'm talking about visually complex games. If you think this is even as powerful as PS4 you're in for a shock.

I don't get how the multi-touch interface can work on a TV, even with an IR pointer device. It's going to be way too imprecise.
 
I don't understand why people are comparing what is substantially a portable with home consoles. Also, there are few 1080p games even on Xbox One, how much Switch have to cost to play 1080p games with portable hardware? No sense like usual.
 
All that matters for IR is to use it for first person shooting games or games like Metroid Prime.

I wouldn't expect an Ethernet port.

I've never said that. People in this thread have been claiming that the Switch won't be able to output any game at 1080p, and your post was phrased in a way that supported that sentiment.

Very few, if any, AAA games will run on the Switch at 1080p native, and I've never claimed otherwise. But to say it's not 1080p capable is completely false.

Yep. As I said during the reveal, it's the WiiU game pad that you can take anywhere. Still not 100% on how I feel about it. I still honestly thought they'd go a DS that plays on TV. Rather than doubling down on the base concept of the least successful home console they've ever made.

You responded to a poster claiming that the Switch would be capable of rendering native 1080p when docked by saying "but we don't know that," which is what I was responding to.

We have rumors stating that the Switch will upclock when docked/downclock when undocked (same source as the lack of HDD, SD card size, etc.) so I would imagine that will be the case, but even if it wasn't the Switch will be 1080p capable docked or undocked.
 
I dont think people realize that the Iphone 6 / 7 is 1,334-by-750 lol ... not even 1080 and no one complains.. Not to mention the Sony's Flagship the Xperia Compact has been 720 for years to keep battery life extremely high and no one complains about image quality.

When you render something at native rez on a decent quality screen you wont be bothered by lower resolution. It is going to look clean and sharp. People need to understand this the switch will be the highest quality portable gaming device with the best exclusive gaming catalog. There is nothing right now that is portable like the switch that has the games and renders games at 720p. vita and 3ds didnt do it... this is a substantial jump .. not to mention it will be play full fledged console games as well..

With all these leaks, you'd think soon somebody would have something more concrete about whether the dock "boosts" things in any way, if nothing else providing more wattage/cooling to enable some nice overclocks...
 
I think 720p is fine. I have the Shield Portable and streaming PC games to it's 5" screen look ok to my eyes. Adding a little over a inch to that should still be ok too.
 
720p should be great on that screen, not sure why there are people making a fuss about it. Xbox one games look fine at 720p on my 60" tv.

If the chip is scalable then it's safe to assume that it will increase performance

If anything the dock is going to allow the handheld to operate at a higher frequency with more cooling so it can run games in 1080. The dock itself has been confirmed to not have any additional processing.

It has also been confirmed by Nintendo that the dock aides in the seamless transtion from the handheld to the tv. It is going to upscale to 1080 like the Wii U did and you wont have any issues.

Some people think the word 1080p is like the word from God or something lol. Just because their favorite company spouts 1080p 1080p they think it must say 1080p no matter what.

This thing is an entire console inside a freaking tablet. People expecting a 1080p screen, more power, long battery life and sub $300. It's just not gonna happen
 
720p for the handheld is great. Question now becomes whether there's a simpler scalar in the dock or if the Switch runs at a high enough TDP docked that 1080p rendering is possible.

Are you really going to be complaining about a system that will give you Wii U quality graphics on something you can take with you on the go?

I dont get this infatuation with people wanting the Switch to be a PS4 2.0.. Even if Nintendo made a traditional x86 console more powerful than a ps4 with standard controls it wouldn't garner anymore sales than the Switch as it is announced.. If Nintendo got the hardware right it still has to have an online infrastructure, trophies, achievements, region free, party chat, and third party support to be uber successful lol..They would have to tick every box possible to be at parity with Sony and Msft.and at that point you would just call it the Scorpio lol...

You are partitioning off the same exact user base.. what Nintendo is doing as usual is growing a base that is outside the norm to eclipse the standard.. We dont need another Ps4bone lol we have 2 already and 3 with PC.
