Ever bought a game based on its resale value?

The MvsC2 thread triggered this really, but have you ever bought a game and left it in its packaging anticipating that it would be worth a lot more one day?

I did this with one game; Castlevania Chrnoicles for PS1. Still have it in the wrapping, figured SotN was quite rare, and there wouldn't be many copies of this game sold. And hell, it was only $20. So far, doesn't seem to have appreciated in value too much.

I've bought games at full price because I expected they'd never see a price drop, but that's not exactly the same thing. The only game that I really bit the bullet on was DDR Disney Mix for PS1, which I paid $50 for (I think retail was 40?) before it skyrocketed in price.

Occasionally. I don't really want to be a collector, but there are uncommon games that I simply want to play (ie. Cubivore) and I know from trying to find them myself that they are likely to increase in price. If I find them for a cheap price, even used, I'll grab them.

I thought Chronicles was worth some decent money. I know over the last year the bottom fell out on SOTN. Suddenly they were everywhere on eBay and at tons of discount stores, etc.

No, but if anyone is planning on doing that, the end of a generation is the ideal time to do so. Lots of games still being released, and lots of very good games being ignored. Plus there are always serious sales of old stock at low, low prices.

I think Sony (or Konami?) re-released SotN as a Greatest Hit a few years ago (Sony did that with FF Tactics too) and totally killed their rarity.

The only three games from this generation I still have sealed are Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shenmue 2, and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy for the GameCube.

I guess I'm fortunate I left Dark Legacy sealed, since its become somewhat valuable and I understand the game isn't very good. :)

True, though while the GH version typically only commands 12-15 bucks, the original prints still go for around 30. Actually, my local Gamestop has a copy of the original print right now for 21 bucks...I should probably pick that up.

Yea, I remember seeing like 3 or 4 copies of FInal Fnatasy Tatics at my local Blockbuster selling for about 10 bucks. Not a bad deal if you can stand that ugly slime green band on the jewel case.

When I worked in retail just over a year ago, I remember getting *new* copies of both FF Tactics and Castlevania: SOTN. So they were still printing these up until very recently.

I work at the electronics section of a local department store.

After seeing what happened to me with MvC2, im gonna keep my eye out for rare games.

Is Capcom vs SNK 2 (Xbox) rare?

The one time I made some serious cash on re-selling games....suddenly over the course of last year I ran into 7 perfect copies of X-Com UFO Defense on PS1 at local Gamestops. They were shipped from a regional warehouse as they were cleaning out their backstock. They were each selling for 10-12 bucks.

Boxart be damned! They need to make Suikoden II a GH...anyone know the sales data for that game?

I got one copy of ICO PAL (with two cards inside, cardboard box) for about € 20. That might be worth something later. Too bad it isn't sealed though. :(

Suikoden II only had around 91,000 copies printed in the U.S. Goes for about $100.

I had one of those and I sold my entire PSX collection years ago.
I should have keeped at least the Suikoden games and Valkyrie Profile :(

The first Suikoden isn't that uncommon - 171,000 copies. But it still goes for about 40-50 dollars.

Valkyrie Profile - Goes for about $85, but they only printed 61,000 copies! Ouch! I sure hope you got a lot for that collection!

I once traded Chrono Trigger for Ogre Tactics because I couldn't find OT anywhere and I wanted to play it and it was said that OT was a bit of a rarity. This was back when the rec.games.video section of your local newsgroup saw just as much traffic as the GAF. Just curious, are any of the the two titles rare or worth anything (both for the SNES)?

Woops, meant Ogre Battle instead of Ogre Tactics.

I remember snagging VP brand new from amazon for $40 in 2001...great summer, as that ended up being my favorite PSX RPG of all time, (maybe all time, period) It's that damn good.

I bought Suikoden II for $40 as well back when it was available. Got Wal-MArt's last copy, actually. :P

If you still have your copy of Tactics Ogre, you're very fortunate. It's much, MUCH rarer than Chrono Trigger.

Chrono isn't rare at all, but it still goes for 40 dollars.

Edit: Tactics Ogre was never even released in the U.S., apparently. Atlus later released it for Playstation. It's worth fifty bucks.

Well, in a roundabout sort of way; I bought a copy of Mars Matrix for a friend, but he already had it, so now I'm holding on to it in hopes it'll appreciate. Being a well-regarded shooter with a low print run, I think it has a pretty good chance of doing so.

Argh...this is making me mad...

When MGS2 was hyped, I traded in my SNES, Chrino Trigger, Mario world, Mario all-stars, Zelda: LTTP for MGS2!

I get pissed off whenever I think about it, Im so stupid!

And I thought I was stupid when I sold my SNES + 20 games for a PS1 in 1997. Jeezus.

The only old game i own that has some value is Einhander. That goes up to 40 bucks, I guess. I think that the Document of MGS2 might be worth something someday...oh wait, those konami bastards bundled with with MGS2. Damnit! :P

Konami Arcade Classics for Playstation? Digital Press gives it a scarcity rating of *5*. Which is pretty rare. It says its worth 16 dollars.

Sealed, I imagine it'd be around 50.

I recently picked up 6 copies of Ashen for N-Gage off of ebgames.com for $2 a pop on a tip from Wario64. I've sold four so far for a total of ~$55. But that's just a buy low, sell high type deal.

I don't think I've ever had the actual foresight to buy a game and wait for its value to successfully go up.

I picked up a copy of Radiant Silvergun sealed for $60 at an obscure mom and pop store. Turned around and sold it to a guy for $200 cash later.

I also picked up a copy of The Guy Game, but who knows if that will be worth anything later.

I don't think that game is worth using as a coaster for your dog.

I don't either, but for some reason people feel compelled to be gutted for Radia -

Oh you were talking about The Guy Game. Well, with the whole underaged girl situation it could potentially be considered a commodity.
