EverQuest Legends

  • EQL has been designed from the ground up to appeal to players who enjoy playing their games solo and/or casually. While groups (up to 4 players) and raids (up to 8 players) are available, the entire game can be played, enjoyed, and experienced solo if that's your playstyle.

Yes, this a standalone game, not just a server, and the sub will be separate from EQ1/EQ2.

Slated for a July 2026 release, sign me the eff up.

Multiclass your legend huh? So.. they sued the pants off of The Heroes' Journey and then stole the idea.

Pretty cool to see old MMOs being rescued from oblivion. Dragon's Dogma Online, Guild Wars and now this one, pretty nice.
I'd be curious to check it out as I never did during it's prime time. Probably a nice game to play in 2060 when I'm at the retirement home with nothing else to do while getting my ass wiped by some robot.

Also, just to complain about something... damn fuck that art in the thumbnail sure sucks. The old art is miles above.

EverQuest - as it was back in the day, has been held up by fans for over a decade with the private server: Project 1999. If you want a "classic" mmo experience, this is the place to play. And best of all, it's free. :)

One such private server was a new one. The Heroes' Journey. It kicked off in 2024 or 2025 I think. It allowed you to choose up to three classes and combine all of their abilities. You could evolve your items by putting them in a certain item slot and they would eventually double in power and gain new stats or abilities.

Honestly it was one of the most fun experiences I'd ever had with the game.

EverQuest Live players were quitting the paid subscription of the official game and joining this free fan server in droves. The private server boasted thousands of concurrent players. For a 27 year old MMO whose private server was only advertised via word of mouth, that's pretty impressive. Then Daybreak sued the hell out of them.

EverQuest Legends is clearly the result of that interaction. Almost every aspect of this is something that THJ was already doing. Except THJ had many more expansions enabled. EQL appears to only be the base game for now.

Edited for more details.

I never played EQ. I was a SWG fan and just rolled right into Warcraft. I might give this a shot if my addiction to Midnight lessons by then.

Damn that sounds scummy as fuck. Thanks for letting us know man, I guess it's much better to play THJ (if it's still playable)

I'd love to play a game that looks like this!

Sounds like FF4

Ha, I was a Bard so my solo needs were already fulfilled. If they can speed up or just eliminate most of the downtime it would be tempting to hop back in after a few decades. The music alone makes my lizard brain wet.

Bard/Shadowknight/Beastlord is a pretty broken combo. A fuckload of buffs, slows and dots and your songs. Hopefully this client allows you to /melody. Or that would suck.

Unfortunately the lawsuit stipulated that THJ shut down. The development team hired a lawyer and actually challenged them but ultimately lost the battle. To add more fuel to the fire, allegedly it was another private server operator who had already made a deal with Daybreak that ratted them out. Allegedly this other private server person's feelings got hurt that THJ was super popular and took the limelight away from their own server and they tattled. Now that's scummy.

Bard and SK at least would be fun. So much potential for mixing up classes on this.

I had no idea about THJ. But now I understand why Project Lantern was discontinued after six years of development back in the December.

Dabbled into EQ a bit throughout the years, seems interesting but having a separate game and separate sub to this is an interesting choice. Might make a bit more sense once it's live.

Curious what the current and classic EQ veterans view on this is...

This game was a true WOW contender back in the day. So sad it didn't take off into a huge seller even though it didn't do really badly it just was being compared sells wise to WOW.

Looks like pure nostalgia for gen x and older millennials; if the frame rate is good and the gameplay is fluid, I think it may be moderately successful.

Although I guess younger generation will not fond with those kind of graphics.

THJ "borrowed" and further developed the multiclass code/idea from a former free emulation server (whose original developers are now behind EQ Legend), then monetized it aggressively until it drew attention and was taken to court by the IP owner. Unsurprisingly, the latter prevailed.

THJ is now dead and buried, and the EQ IP holder took the opportunity to launch an officially licensed version of he concept, hiring developers from both Project 1999 and Quarm, the two most popular EQ emulation servers (both servers operating under official agreements).

More broadly, it's always interesting to see a publisher support modders in releasing an official version of their work. That's how Sonic Mania came to be, and it ended up being the only truly relevant Sonic title since Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

The current gen plays Roblox and Minecraft. I don't think visuals and FPS matter at fucking all to them man.

It's all about which YTer, streamer, or tiktok meme convinces them to play something.

I'm curious what OSRS or RuneScape 3 playerbase age demos are.

What a coincidence this appearing in the first page!! Precisely today I've shared this old gem:
But was regarding another matter with similar monetisation.

They should have brought EQ2, that one aged a bit better. I would have back to that one.
EQ2 was EQ that tried to be WoW, but failed. The "EQ magic" was never fully captured by WoW (and even less by EQ2). It was a bit there during WoW classic but it vanished completely starting TBC, when Blizzard embraced the theme park design as opposed to EQ's more systemic design.
EQ is just a better game than it's sequel and there's a reason the emu community is still active 25 years later.

Jeff Kaplan confirmed in his long interview that this isn't true. They were in development around the same time and the original WoW dev team thought they were screwed because they heard EQ2 and was on the horizon while in development and then on top of that Star Wars Galaxies was out.

Somehow they survived through both and Guild Wars 1 which was also partially made by ex-Blizzard devs.

EQ2 might have been very different early in development from what it eventually became at launch. Sony was scared of what WoW had done and ended up reshaping both EQ1 and EQ2 into failed WoW-like chimeras.

Emulation servers tend to focus on pre-2004 content for that reason, EQ arguably declined after that.

Maybe post-launch things might have changed and I'll give you that, but both games launched within the same month. Even counting betas, it would literally be impossible for them to copy WoW in such an insane development speed.

They would have needed someone on the inside of Blizzard leaking design docs for that to happen. Also the heads of WoW were literally studying Everquest 1 as a basis for WoW but slowly developed it into their own thing. Again, all confirmed by Kaplan.

Edit: I think this is simply an Infamous/Prototype situation and you are making it out to be more than it is.
