EverQuest Legends

  • EQL has been designed from the ground up to appeal to players who enjoy playing their games solo and/or casually. While groups (up to 4 players) and raids (up to 8 players) are available, the entire game can be played, enjoyed, and experienced solo if that's your playstyle.

Yes, this a standalone game, not just a server, and the sub will be separate from EQ1/EQ2.

Slated for a July 2026 release, sign me the eff up.

Multiclass your legend huh? So.. they sued the pants off of The Heroes' Journey and then stole the idea.

Pretty cool to see old MMOs being rescued from oblivion. Dragon's Dogma Online, Guild Wars and now this one, pretty nice.
I'd be curious to check it out as I never did during it's prime time. Probably a nice game to play in 2060 when I'm at the retirement home with nothing else to do while getting my ass wiped by some robot.

Also, just to complain about something... damn fuck that art in the thumbnail sure sucks. The old art is miles above.

EverQuest - as it was back in the day, has been held up by fans for over a decade with the private server: Project 1999. If you want a "classic" mmo experience, this is the place to play. And best of all, it's free. :)

One such private server was a new one. The Heroes' Journey. It kicked off in 2024 or 2025 I think. It allowed you to choose up to three classes and combine all of their abilities. You could evolve your items by putting them in a certain item slot and they would eventually double in power and gain new stats or abilities.

Honestly it was one of the most fun experiences I'd ever had with the game.

EverQuest Live players were quitting the paid subscription of the official game and joining this free fan server in droves. The private server boasted thousands of concurrent players. For a 27 year old MMO whose private server was only advertised via word of mouth, that's pretty impressive. Then Daybreak sued the hell out of them.

EverQuest Legends is clearly the result of that interaction. Almost every aspect of this is something that THJ was already doing. Except THJ had many more expansions enabled. EQL appears to only be the base game for now.

Edited for more details.

Damn that sounds scummy as fuck. Thanks for letting us know man, I guess it's much better to play THJ (if it's still playable)

I'd love to play a game that looks like this!

Sounds like FF4

Ha, I was a Bard so my solo needs were already fulfilled. If they can speed up or just eliminate most of the downtime it would be tempting to hop back in after a few decades. The music alone makes my lizard brain wet.

Bard/Shadowknight/Beastlord is a pretty broken combo. A fuckload of buffs, slows and dots and your songs. Hopefully this client allows you to /melody. Or that would suck.

Unfortunately the lawsuit stipulated that THJ shut down. The development team hired a lawyer and actually challenged them but ultimately lost the battle. To add more fuel to the fire, allegedly it was another private server operator who had already made a deal with Daybreak that ratted them out. Allegedly this other private server person's feelings got hurt that THJ was super popular and took the limelight away from their own server and they tattled. Now that's scummy.

I had no idea about THJ. But now I understand why Project Lantern was discontinued after six years of development back in the December.
