Everyone must play MGS3

I dont care whether you like the gameplay or not but everyone should watch the cinematics. It was like FF7/MGS/ZeldaOoT back in 97-98. It went well beyond my expectation. I think it would be hard to top it soon.

I got about halfway through the first one, and about an hour into the second, but couldn't stand the long-ass codec cutscenes. Does this one have a narrative I'll be into even if I don't know all the events in the first and second installments?

PS2 GoTY!

The beauty of MGS3 is that the game is a prequel. It takes place in 1964 and sets up the events for MGS1 and MGS2. It definitely helps clear a ton of gibberish found in MGS2.

Now, with the codec cutscenes, there are quite a few in the beginning. The first couple hours of the game is very story heavy. Lots of cut scenes and lots of codec messages. But don't let this dissuade you. After the prologue is done and over with, the game really opens up. The cut scenes come at the right time, and the codec messages are short and sweet. If you remotely liked a tiny part of Metal Gear Solid you should at least give MGS3 a shot.

mike, the game plays like the previous 2 but more refined. CQC, camo, and missing radar (so you have to use old fashion stuff like sonar or motion detector) are the 3 big improvements I think.

CODEC can be skipped although I wouldnt recommend skipping all because some of them are quite interesting.

Seriousy though, I really think everyone should give this game a chance. Every single gamer, even those who didn't quite liked MGS, or who hated MGS2, even those who hate stealth gameplay in general. The game is just that unusually good.

Best Game I have played this year and is up there with Mario 64 as one of my all time faves...

Do yourself a favor and play this game

Dumb, dumb, dumb. If you're trying to sell the game on anyone that doesn't already own it, the last thing you talk about is the cinematics.

Gameplay = ROCK

Everything else is a distant second.

SpokkX, the controls are fantastic, sir.

the control is so mind-blowingly enabling once you master it. YOu can make Snake do just about anything after a couple hours of getting the systems down.

oh yeah, duh, my GotY no doubt. I can't remember the last time I have been so obsessed with a game and it's characters like MGS3, or a movie for that matter.

Kojima has broke new grounds with this one, on ALL fronts: from sound-to graphics-cinematics-music-GAMEPLAY-adrenaline pumping sequences-boss battles-CQC-characters-ENDING-Replayability.

Yeah, it just needs to be played to be understood. And the game requires hours of uninterrupted play, to get the most out of it. Think of it has a movie you PLAY, where you don't want to be interrupted from the world and story you have escaped into.

And like some have said, after the first couple hours of story set-up and gameplay, the game truly takes off, and wait until the final hours of the game, nothing else comes close to the conviction you feel of completing your mission, and the immersion of gameplay INTO the story.

For the record, I played MGS1 and 2 both for a couple hours each. I really liked MGS1, but MGS2 lost me. MGS3 is an entirely different animal and has me captivated with the series now.

I can appreciate that. But have you watched the Boss's expressions closely, and her eyes? Did you not feel the tension when
Ocelot juggles his revolvers roulette style at Sokolov?

CG aint a distant 2nd. I SKIPPED THROUGH the CG and codec shit in the other 2 MGS's. I hate that crap usually. But this game's CG had me sold from the opening sequence.

Make sure to have 3 hours available for the end of the game.

Cause it takes you on a trip where you don't want to put down the controller.

I was screwed for work the next day.

I think CG is usually considered to be video besides that of the gameplay engine, but I'm never sure.

And yeah, the cut-scenes are often wonderful. And the "distant second" thing isn't worth debating. But my point is that people who wouldn't have tried the game for themselves by now are largely those that hate the cut-scenes and not necessarily the gameplay.

There is no CG in the game. There's FMV sequences of real life footage stuff from the Cold War era, but that's it

The game rocks, best cutscene direction ever, very awesome soundtrack, great bosses, lots of secrets and the best MGS game in the series. Fighting the bosses are fun in this one since there's many ways to kill them. It just rocks

The scary thing is, MGS3 cutscenes look better than some pre-rendered CG.

In some sequences the lighting job done on the scene really makes it look like it's pre-rendered, yet it's still being done real time.

After watching how well it all worked together in MGS3, in game switches from Pre-rendered CG cutscene to gameplay is now jarring to go through..

The last thing I look foward to in a game.

However the gameplay is amazing and the codec sequences are short, that's what should be hyped.

And like someone mentioned before, be sure to reserve the last 3 hours so you can consume the climax of the game in 1 sitting. Very intense stuff. The game's ending is very satisfying as well, and I'd go as far as to call it one of the best endings ever in a video game. It's refreshing too in this age of stupid cliffhanger endings

I demoed this game for a friend who's a die hard Halo2 + HL2 nut and he walked away very impressed when it was all said and done.

Of course after he saw Rumble Roses right afterwards, he totally forgot Halo2, HL2, AND MGS3 and was left mesmerized by RR.

yeah the game is much better than MGS1 and 2. I am 10 hours into it and so far I am really impressed (just finished HL2 few weeks ago)

Can't wait to get this exam crap out of the way!

The game is great... But 60fps feels good as sh!t when you go back to playing MGS2 (never finished it, now my save is corrupted and have to start all over).

It's been said before, but I'll say it again:

I can't wait to play it! I'm getting MGS3 for my birthday. WHICH IS TODAY.

Oh, no you didn't

Great game, still overrated by you guys.

Fuck off. I know you are "still in a dream... Snake Eateeeerr". It's not hard to have a giant boner for this game. I think we all are just so stoked because the game was so UNDERhyped.

No...Seriously, definitely the best PS2 game I've played all year. So far, my GOTYs go like this...

PS2- MGS3: Snake Eater
Xbox- Halo 2
GCN- Pikmin 2

I F'n hate trying to sneak passed guards. Tt is next to impossible get around unseen without the old radar. The motion and person sensor range is useless. Take a fiew steps, go into first pers view look around, take a few more steps, repeat endless until you are spotted then guards flood and you must start all over*Smashes controler* The boss fights have been great so far though.

I killed just about every guard...364 enemies killer. Got the Shark rating.

This is sort of off-topic, but it's on the subject of Metal Gear, and I wasn't sure if it was worth starting a new thread for...

Does anyone think it's kind of ironic that Kojima makes these great games that are essentially cautionary tales about war, but the main draw is avoiding enemies, stalking enemies, killing enemies... I mean, I realize you can play the game PEACEFULLY, without killing others (except maybe some bosses), but does he think that people care about them because of their anti-violence/anti-crazy-genetic-experiments message, or does he realize that most people just like deviously and violently hunting enemies?

Isn't this the same reason Zack de la Rocha quit Rage? Medium > message?

I don't know, I didn't really follow the situation. I'm actually sure this point I raised has been talked about before, though I wasn't involved in the discussion, so I'm not trying to make some poignant statement or anything like that. But I have been thinking about it recently, after hearing some people describe why they enjoyed the series so much at work. It just seems like it promotes violence more than it expresses a healthy message.

Dude, listen to yourself. I understand your point, but you sound like a soccer mom. It's 'Tactical Espionage Action', not 'Promoting a Healthy Message'.
