EVO 2017 Player's Choice Game - [Ended] UMVC3 wins #SometimesEvilWins

Can't believe people still think like this and are so self-unaware. Bottom line is if a game can't hook people for whatever reason that's its own fault. Especially after it gets as much exposure as MKXL does and still fails to remain relevant for the long haul. Smaller fighting games get coddled in the FGC because everyone knows they can't survive criticism like other games. Doesn't mean they don't deserve the niche status they get.

Marvel basically got zero support from Capcom the last few years and it still has a following. Netherrealm and others should take note.

Who should they be taking notes from? You just said yourself that Marvel's following is in spite of Capcom's lack of support, not because of it.

Mortal Kombat with $135

Makes sense. No community out there supporting NRS games older than the newest. NRS is gonna put all their money in Injustice 2 so no reason to expect a gigantic donation from the publisher to sway it late in the game.

ARMS and Pokken have an outside chance of a company jumping in last minute with a gigantic multi-thousand dollar donation. KI also has a shot at that (a better one than ARMS and Pokken IMO), Mahvel just has the community.

Will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

He's talking about the Netherrealm community.

I remember Injustice falling off rather quickly about a yr after it was released. MKX is the new Injustice.

KI is way behind now. Really wanted to see Rico take his crown back.

At least I still have the World Cup.
Max's planned donation stream could push KI over the edge to compete with UMvC3, again.

As for Pokkén, the Japanese fans may drop another overnight donation.

They've already said that corporate donations will immediately get said game DQ'd.

Ah fair enough. I disagree though, if the community is only barely large enough to support the latest release, no point diluting that, and failing on two fronts instead.

Mike Z on Twitter:

The other part of this 'evote' is that it puts communities against each other, the same way it did last time. That SUCKS, win or lose.

@MikeZSez I already fell into the trap. I hate this every time.

Even though the game I want to win Marvel is in the lead right now I so agree with these two. Already seeing so much shit talking being thrown around by reckless people on twitter, this forum, and other places. I don't want to see other Fighting games get screwed over.

How about "opening" 3 or more evo slots for games if people all donate and reach a certain goal rather than pitting communities against each other. Ugh. MrWiz said they have 2.5 times the space as last year so I don't see why not.

I like Leffen's point about it. Melee doesn't really need EVO anymore as it's grown to the point that dedicated Smash events like Genesis and Shine are sustainable and can cater to each Smash community's needs better (although Genesis 4 Smash 4 was unfortunately a complete mess). One Smash game on Sunday alternating every year or two and the other on Saturday is fair considering they're the second and third most popular games on the whole lineup respectively.

Leffen is insane and I wouldn't listen to him about anything that isn't about the direct playing of melee.

Welp.

RIP in Peace KI. 🙁

Bring on KI4 for Scorpio, EVO 2019!

I'm a little tired of MvC3, but out of respect for Yipes, I respect the game and welcome it coming back.

Arms is craziness though, a game that isn't even out doesn't deserve main stage. It's disrespectful. (Never been a fan of when Evo did that in the past with huge titles, either, especially when BB couldn't make it in.)

Tell that to the last 3 NRS games and Tekken

because I'd support you on that if you did

I wasn't a fan of that either, especially over established communities getting the shaft. I recall an NRS game getting in last year over BB, even after BB had the most hype final the prior year by a country mile.

Ironically, Mike Z spends too much time whining about other games "stealing" his success. But they do have a point. It's not so much the fault of EVO - that place is not the only tournament those games can live. In fact, EVO is just a singular celebration of fighting games. People can and will host large tournaments over the course of the year for their favorite games. If the players are willing to put in the work, you'll see hype matches all over the place.

The importance on being at EVO is too damn high. I respect games getting more attention, but the community needs to stop acting like their game is killed if it doesn't show up. It's a single event. The notoriety is great and all, but man, playing the game as much as possible should be at the forefront, not getting in a single event.

lol marvel has fallen big time. i hope it loses so capcom doesn't get to advertise the new marvel game alongside it.

Hell, the Catherine community is making it happen, and we're as niche as it gets.

If Max is involved then that game has the biggest probability, unless some bigger Twitch personality than him does one. Max could stream Way of the Warrior for the rest of his life and he'll still get thousands of viewers and donations.

whoa it's kadey. thought we lost you for good to destiny.

EVO has gotten so big that it is now becoming this sort of watered-down "e-sports" event in comparison. I understand how and why this happened, but the end result is me caring less and less about EVO with each passing year.

Exactly how I've felt for the last couple years. I can't hate on it, though. Chase the money. I miss the exhibitions and non-dead commentary though.

I agree man. It feels really bad when you see people say a game is dead when it does not make it into Evo.

End of the day I'm support the game I love and wish other communities to stay strong too.

KI was the main thing I was looking forward to watching at EVO this time around, so I probably won't even bother.

Other tournaments that are slightly smaller in scale are now much more fun to watch due to the better representation across the board with more games. Events like Combo Breaker are fantastic.

I understand how and why this happened, but the end result is me caring less and less about EVO with each passing year. Maybe I'd feel differently if I actually liked and followed SFV in the same way that I did every SF game before it.

Now I'm more interested in series that undeservedly have smaller competitive player bases:

- Killer Instinct
- Skullgirls
- Mortal Kombat XL
- Guilty Gear Revelator (at least this made it into EVO)
I agree with the observations, but I came to the opposite conclusion.

I LOVE the increased accessibility and the attempts to make EVO more approachable and casual. With every passing year, I become more and more interested in the EVO scene and their efforts to include games that are more casual friendly encourages me to watch it at all, and then when my foot is in the door I sample a bit of everything. It's a great experience and one that I do my best to share with others.

I greatly appreciate the efforts to become more mainstream and to appeal to the masses, and it makes me happy to share a celebration of my medium with others!!

But yes, more games would be wonderful. Hell, they don't even have to be fighting games! Besides Pokken, Arms, and KI, I'd love stuff like Pocket Fighters, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Catherine, League/DOTA, Splatoon, Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, and Mortal Kombat X. I eagerly await the evolution and expansion of EVO and hope with every year that more and more people find it accessible to join in on the fun ^^

I had legit forgotten that MLG bowed out despite being in the lead LOL!

This is why you don't put unproven, unreleased games on the ballot.
Is this supposed to be a statement about ARMS?

If Nintendo allowed it, then it will be in a ready state for EVO.

I see people say stuff like this, but they never cite viewer statistics. How many people actually give a damn about "better representation" and just like to watch what they like?

By "better representation" I just mean more games to watch. EVO is the biggest tournament of the year, but it also features maybe the smallest number of games when compared to other events big and small throughout the year.

There's a ton of stuff the Marvel community is planning right now, I'm hearing about all kinds of donation streams and events like Undefeated doing a ton to contribute (if everything goes as planned, it should be featured on Twtich's main page for the weekend). it's a really interesting time to be part of that scene, I'm really hoping this work keeps the donations sustained the next couple weeks. I dropped $15 last night but I'll probably add more when I get paid.

First day of donations is over. Current standings:

1. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 $8,640
2. Pokkén Tournament $6,511
3. Killer Instinct $4,239
4. Windjammers $1,378
5. ARMS $1,283
6. Skullgirls $625
7. Super SFII Turbo $563
8. Mortal Kombat XL $135
9. Nidhogg $35
