Ex-GameTrailers staff announce new project EasyAllies

Can someone explain how this model works. I mean I understand there will be costs but if it uploaded to YouTube isn't that free?

What's all this money for? I genuinely have no idea how this works.

Patreon and Youtube are two separate things. YouTube will be where their content is hosted, along with Twitch, and Patreon will keep them afloat and help them to able to do those things. Because unless you're a YouTube channel with millions of subscribers and a lot of sponsors then there won't be a way for them to make content and making a living out of it, especially with 7 people involved.

You basically pay for allowing them to stick together and make content together.
Like basically if nobody wants to pay for the kind of content they want to do it basically just means that there's no market(glad though that that doesn't seem to be the case).
Everyone will have access to it even if they don't pay.
And that's a good thing even from the standpoint of a paying supporter because the content being out there for free makes it easier to bring new people and that might become supporters and the whole thing can grow and allow them to bring even more/better content.

Was a fan of Gametrailers, always will be but I'm glad to see the gang back together so soon. With this pedigree of talent I'm sure we will see little difference in quality.

I prefer when they are in groups bouncing off each other, so I'd actually prefer less content - not hugely interested in daily streams by individuals (presumably they'll share that out so each person only needs to do maybe one per week to keep commitments down), would happily swap all of those dailies for one extra weekly or monthly get together.

Are they all close enough to each other to do a group video regularly?

I was already surprised of the quality of the initial video of them all taking calls to get back together.

The way it used to work at GT was that one person "owned" the stream and other people jumped in when they could. I assume that's going to be the case here, or they could just continue streaming on their own channels.

They are close enough, at least in pockets. They've already been doing some streaming together in the meantime.

Plus it means they'll be able to run sponsorships on their videos for non-paying fans, such as Lootcrate / Squarespace etc etc.
I'm glad to be able to cough up a few quid though.

Nice for them looking forward to some of the content but seriously wondering what is next because none of it is full time, and this + day time job is going to be hard.

I think they got in too late and there was a split with the audience between YT and GT sites. You can't even find all the videos they did on YouTube.

Yup. I think they would have found success on YT but they were just really disorganized, and gave it little promo on the GT site. They had to integrate the two.

Maybe they will become as successful as Kinda Funny and ultimately be completely independent. Good to see that most of the GT guys are back. Gotta love Brandon, Kylo Bossman and the rest of the crew.

It's simple, really. More funds = more shows, more dedication. Less funds = less shows, less dedication. The more funds they have, the better and more dedicated they can be. They would love this to be a full-time thing but they can't unless a tremendous amount of support happens. If you want to help them produce content and make a gaming outlet, fund it.

As others have said, if you look on their page, you can see their various goals and what each amount of money will enable them to do. The money is mostly going towards those production-related costs and paying these people for their time. If you look click on the question mark beneath the amount they're making per month, you'll be able to read how Patreon's fees work for content providers.

More generally, this model is based around an old style of supporting artists. Put most simply, patrons are people who give money to other people (typically artists) who do things that they like. You're not paying for a specific product; you're supporting the person with their money so that they can make many products. You could imagine how an aristocrat might be a patron to a painter that they really like. With this relationship, the artist is able to make a living with their work because they are supported by their patron and the patron is able to continue enjoying this artists' work and perhaps request specific projects be made. If an artist were to stop producing works that the aristocratic liked, support could be pulled and the artist would have to find a new patron or a new profession.

Patreon is just a modern version of that model using a crowdfunding approach, allowing content creators and artists to be supported by large numbers of patrons so that they can continue producing works and their consumers can continue enjoying them. The major difference between this and most forms of exchanges is that you're paying to support the person rather than buying a specific, singular product which would in turn support a person or large company. As an example, buying a ticket to see Zootopia supports Walt Disney Animation Studios, but you're not sending a check to Disney regardless of the quality or quantity of their output. Patronage means you trust that the artist will continue creating products that you like. I guess it's kind of like the difference between subscribing to a magazine versus buying individual issues.

Regarding YouTube: most of their content will likely be available for free consumption on YouTube and Twitch. Some content may be exclusive or delivered early to patrons (see their rewards tiers for how it works for them). This just enables them to make that content.

I'm an idiot. I said that I hoped the new podcast would be in video form and it says under rewards, "video podcast". Sweet!

So is this like a part time gig for them?

Judging from what Brandon said in his interview on Kinda Funny, I think he's gonna let them do this as a side project until they land on their feet. I'm guessing they're probably doing freelance or other projects as well to make ends meet. Not sure until they decide to clarify that later on in a stream or podcast.

Glad to see them back together. Hopefully it's a sustainable model for so many people if it's their full time gig not a side activity.

I don't care about streaming because I'm an old man, but I'll welcome GameTrailers back with open arms in any form and under any name. Anything to get my weekly podcast back.

With you 100%

I just asked Bloodworth (who's on the twitch chat at the moment) like 10 mins ago and he said they haven't discussed a realistic full time goal yet.

If there's enough interest, I can see it happening - but no clue what the number would need to be.

I'm very, very happy they're back. What a great thing to wake up to.

I'm not a fan of the name (seems too insidey) and I don't care about the game streams at all, in any shape or form.

But I'll happily pledge at least 10 bucks a month so they can keep doing what they did at GT. The podcast alone is also at least worth that much to me. Depending on the content they put out, I'll be happy to give them more.

But the most important thing to me is that they're back!

I would love to see Retrospectives come back.

I know this sounds selfish, but I would love to see an updated FINAL FANTASY Retrospective. Especially with FFXV coming.

Let's do this. i NEED those reviews back.
I need them to tell me what to think of games!

Put my money where my mouth is with $5/month.

This means you will be paying $50 a month right? Is that what pledging is? I can't pledge that much at the moment.

I don't think they're expecting everyone to pledge $50/month : P

Honestly, I'm donating $25/month fully expecting to drop that down to the $20 or $5 tier once they have a more stable base and income.

I don't want to tell you how to spend your money, I just hope people support these guys even if it's at $1/month.

Recently lost my income so can't pledge much at the very moment sadly. It'll be $10 for now and I'll kick it up towards the $25 as soon as I can and hopefully even higher than that! Absolutely thrilled to see you guys back! 😀
