As entertaining as it is to laugh at Liefelds latest atrocity, it did remind me that my cousin lent me the first 2 issues to "Ex Machina", after raving to me for months about how awesome the series is. And now that I got around to reading them I have to agree, it's impressed the hell out of me from the very beginning. At first the way he described it - 'a crappy super hero decides that he can do the most good by parlaying his mediocre fame into a political gig and he becomes mayor of NYC' - didn't thrill me that much, but it's both interesting, well drawn and surprisingly funny.

I don't read many comics so I don't know the people involved in making the comic (although the pencils remind me of Sleeper and some of the Authority... same guy?) but I can't imagine a better 2 issue beginning to a comic series. Mike offered to lend me the other issues if I wanted them but I'm so impressed I'm just going to hunt down the TPB tomorrow. I found the "First Hundred Days" TPB online but it looks pretty inexpensive, how many issues does it contain? The amazon listing for it doesn't say.

Any fans here? I did a forum search for it but it pulled up too many references to the phrase.

Ex Machina fan here!

I've been following the series since #1, as I'm a huge fan of Brian K Vaughan and Tony Harris. The last two issues (#11 & 12) have been absolutely spectacular. #11 is a standalone where Mayor Hundred enforces a bylaw to shutdown all palm-reading storefronts (weird, but gripping issue). #12 introduces a new character - if I say anymore, I'd be spoiling.

Are you planning to follow this series entirely in trade, Calder? Or, pick up the single issues as well?

EDIT: To answer your question, the TPB collects the first five issues.

I like it a lot. Agent Dormer lent me a copy of the first few books of Y The Last Man and the first book of this, and they're both quite gripping and enjoyable. Brian K. Vaughan is the man.

I lent myself the tbp and thought it was awesome. Thanks, Agent Dormer!

But, seriously - BKV rocks it like few else can.

Runaways & Y - The Last Man are two of the most compelling reads on a monthly basis, but I just found this boring.

Ack, i think I missed issue 11.

I am a fan since the first TPB came out. I was already reading Y The Last Man and picked it up on account of the author.

It's cool.

One thing that's starting to grate on my a little is the expository/philosophy way the characters talk. It fits in much better in Ex Machina sinc eit's mostly set in the mayor's office, but in Y it's gettign a little old. But that's a minor complaint to a pair of great series.

Oh, I don't know if you've gotten that far yet, but it's a nice touch exactly how it is that he was a popular enough hero to win the mayor's office.

I (heart) Brian K. Vaughn.

Ex Machnia has been consistently excellent, heavy on the political drama and light on the superheroics, to the point where The Great Machine is a nice touch (and an intriguing mystery) but doesn't overwhelm the rest of the book. Vaughn has a lot of affection for New York City and, as a way-out-of-towner, it's interesting to read about the daily life and political wrangling of the city. For anyone interested in giving it a go but not quite sure about dropping cash on the trade, I second the recommendation of Issue 11. You'll get more out of it if you've been following the series, but it stands alone perfectly well and makes for a good sample of the series.

However, Y The Last Man is where Vaughn really shines. The title is literal: every male on the planet dies off, with the exception of our hero and his pet monkey. Seeing Vaughn explore the consequences of this disaster (as well as slowly investigating the cause of it) would be perfectly interesting in it's own right; however, add in top-notch characterization and a liberal dose of black humor and the book is positively gripping. The latest story line has me on tenterhooks eagerly awaiting the next issue.

Finally, if you've ever been a Marvel fan, Runaways is a must read. Don't get me wrong, the book is perfectly entertaining even if you're showing up to the party cold - it's hard to screw up a team book about teenagers battling supervillians who just happen to be their parents - but Vaughn's excellent use of Marvel continuity is what really makes the series for me. In particular, Volume 2 has been a hoot and a half, as former teenage B-list heroes try to help those who used to be in their situation...such, our less-than-enthused heroes. Cue wacky hijinx. Again, don't worry that you have to be steeped in Marvel lore to enjoy the title, but if you're a recovering Zombie, this is crucial reading.

So, hie thee to Amazon! The first volumes of Y The Last Man, Ex Machina, and Runaways are all available for ten bucks or less. Alternately, camp out at your local comic shop until they remind you that they aren't a library; then, if you like what you're reading, see if your library has any of the trades avaialble. Even if they don't there's always interlibrary loan. If nothing else, plop your ass down at your local megabookstore where they won't care if you read a stack of trades in one sitting.

Cool, I'm off to find both the Ex Machina as well as the first TPB for Y The Last Man based on the comments here. I almost never buy single issues of comics anymore, I just find TPB more convenient and solid feeling. I'm always worried I'm going to bend or rip the covers of normal issues, but TPB are more like novels and they stack up on my bookshelf so nicely. I don't see a second volume for Ex Machina online anywhere, so I guess I'll have to wait to read the latter issues everyone is raving about.

I didn't know about Runaways but the premise alone has me wanting it. And I should like the Marvel aspects, as well. I'm going to see if my shop has it tonight.

Drop by the thread once you've read the first volume and let us know what you think. The original run of the series is pretty solid, but the recent relaunch (which, to clarify, is what I was referring to when I mentioned Volume Two above) is really where the flavor is. Still, it'sa ll good and I'm confident you'll dig on it, particularly if you have any fondness for teen team books. The original run has been collected in three collections (six issues each at eight bucks a pop) and the second volume is chugging along nicely with a fourth collection due out this fall.

Calder, enjoy the Y and Ex Machina goodness! While it'll be a bit longer before the second Ex Machina trade is out, there's plenty of Y for you to dig on in the meantime.

I picked up the first two volumes and it's decent. I need to *really* stretch my suspension of disbelief at times, though, and the Expository Disease is as bad as ever. Worse, it's a case of "just suppose..." and then the characters are always right. But it's good enough to keep going, and if it gets better, so be it.

Latest Y kinda sucked. I haven't liked the last couple of arcs very much. But the last scene is a good sign!

I need to pick this trade up (or at least read it at my local Borders bookstore), but I'm kinda low on cash (just bought the first 6 issues of Ultimates 2 off eBay, only $12 though, cheaper than if I had got them from the comic book store in the first place).

Like I said, I think that the series relaunch is a hoot and a half; if you're enjoying the current volumes enough to continue with the series, go ahead and wrap the first part up with volume three, then keep an eye out for volume four in the not-too-distant future.

I quite enjoyed the last few issues of Y, but I'm a sucker for pirates and romance. And, yes, I believe I yelled "Oh shit!" when I read the last scene, so things should really crank up before long. And, with luck, we're moving towards an honest to goodness ending one of these days.

Yeah, I am trusting Runaways gets better-- and even still, it's good enough to read.

I think Y is irking me in part because it's not living up to the earlier issues *or* Ex Machina right now. But that's praising with faint damnation.

Dang! I just read the thrid volume of Runaways tonight (last of the first series) and it really, really redeems the so-so nature of the first two. Great ending. And some stuff I thought I was suspending belief about makes sense in light of the ending.

OK. Now I need more of them!
