👀🔥 NEW STEAM CONSOLE?

VERY SPICY with VALVE, it already seems that a new STEAM console is coming to compete against PS5 and XBOX in the future.

Thanks to @HandleDeck we have learned that VALVE works hand in hand with AMD and its RDNA 4 technologies.

Spoiler: no, it's not.

At most, they are probably working on a new iteration of the "Steam machines" concept, which is just another form factor for your PC, joining desktop systems and handheld (Steamdeck).
I doubt that their goal is to establish themselves as a "new console on the market" in direct competition with Sony and Nintendo.

If SteamOS continues to blur the lines between desktop PC gaming and simplistic console OS, directly competing with Sonys and Microsofts machines will only be a matter of how much mindshare these things can gain in the future. Gen Z and younger don't give a shit about consoles, PC gaming is more popular among them than anything.

I find it funny how they always assume the goal is to take on Sony & Microsoft with a console.

They don't have to do that to make serious money with a PC, Steam OS based console where the games come to your platform without any of the development costs.

If they slot themselves into a comfortable niche they don't have to 'win' to win.

I wish they go through with this. Valve doesn't have the knowledge or the expertise to manufacture hardware and distribute it on the scale of the big three. It will be a huge money drain endeavor for them.

And Sony will stop their PC initiative in a heartbeat.

So win win for me 🤣

You are embarrassing yourself.

Yeah, and to be fair, I'd buy something like that. I'd like a zero hassle machine in my living room to just run my Steam stuff on the TV, because Steam Link can unfortunately be kind of hit and miss.

Even if it is more of a niche product, or like a baseline reference system for other OEMs to release their own Steam boxes,
it'll still outsell Xbox :lollipop_beaming_smiling:
.

People really underestimate how much work Sony and Nintendo put into this aspect, a software company can't just come in and usurp that.

Remember, even Microsoft failed.

They would make more money just upgrading the Deck and including a dock that pumps more power in to it and overclocks it a little bit like the Switch.

The guy saying this has 0 credibility. He throws anything and everything at the wall hoping it sticks for engagement. He's an attention whore, and that might be harsh but it's also the truth.

If true, this will be the first time a console win on day 1, with 150m+ users and the largest launch library ever.
It's true that Valve already has a huge market that will only continue to grow. They don't need to sell 100 million units of their console like Nintendo with the Switch 2—probably even one million would be a success for them. Unlike Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, Valve operates in different world.

Steam machine already happened and nobody cared about it. Nobody will care about this product either especially when you're going head to head with nintendo, sony, and microsoft. There's no space for valve to make a profit nor make a dent in the home console space.

So seemingly all the talking that Sony isn't competing with valve was just fanboyism.

Sony was stupid not to do its own thing on pc.

Im getting one probably, but this will almost certainly be another Steam Deck, where the number of Youtuber videos gushing about it will exceed the number of actual sales to end-users.

A system without Fortnite/Minecraft/Roblox is going to be DOA on the mass-market. Maybe it even gets worse when you start counting the big GAAS games on Steam that don't support Linux with their anti-cheats.

If they ever dare to do that , it's gonna be impossible for fans not to expect Valve to develop exclusive titles, specifically Half Life 3.

Which, for me, makes all of this impossible.

What are you talking about? Do you not understand how competition benefits you?

They need to change their entire corporate make-up and how they deal with consumers if they want to get successful in this arena, they likely won't tho.

Yeah well, I'm sure there are enough big brains at Valve to figure something out! But it would sure put the expectations to the roof. Again, I'm sure people would ask for HL3 over and over. Who knows though, they did it with Index. 🤔

Learn why Steam Machines failed and how the situation is different now, then come back and talk.

I hope it's true because while I love Sony
, they need competition or we will return to the days of arrogant Sony, and nobody wants that.

With MS and Xbox failing, Sony needs someone to keep them on their toes.

Big brains is only part of it.

You need to have world-wide distribution, which means you need to build relationships with retailers worldwide in order to have these things on as many shelves as possible.

You need to have actual marketing now, guerilla efforts like they did in the past will have v.limited efficacy when it comes to pushing hardware (which MS is discovering rn), you now need to be on billboards and bus stops, which costs massive $$$ and needs people to run.

They will easily have to at least double in team-size to make things work, and you will almost certainly have to have a hierarchy in there too (logistics and distribution need that kind of organizational discipline in order to gain efficiencies).

It's an entirely different ball-game than what Valve has been doing.

Again, I'm sure people would ask for HL3 over and over. Who knows though, they did it with Index. 🤔
The Index is barely making a blip when it comes to sales and awareness of VR devices, especially when you compare it to how much Meta has done in the space.

I don't see why they would want to do this when the risk is probably quite high for them. They've got Steam Deck which is an amazing device.

No .. you are if you believe they can succeed. Wait? They have done it before and failed, they are also doing it now with Steamdeck and failing miserabley 🤷
Are you mentally impaired? I literally wrote what "I believe" in the first reply of this thread and it has nothing to do with the delirious fever dreams you are sperging about.

I find this nonsensical.
Because it is. it's a stupid suggestion.
Like when people tried to argue what number of Steamdecks Valve needed to sell to "make it work".
The correct answer is "ANY number" (as long as they wouldn't find themselves with storage houses filled with unsold pieces), because regardless of selling "just" 100K pieces or 20 millions, whatever they were going to sell didn't need to create a new self-sufficient market on its own, but simply to ADD to their current user base.

It's going to be the same with a pseudo-console format.
