So I have this external hard drive that I think has died on me. It turns on but I don't think it spins anymore and my PC no longer recognizes it. I'm wondering what options I have.

- What physical repair methods are there?

- Is there software that would allow me to find out exactly what files are/were on the drive to determine exactly what was lost?

- Any reputable shops out there that do this sort of repair service, or is that even worth it?

I appreciate any info that you could offer me.

I just had this happen to me also today WTF, did they all take a dive for the worst? (taging for later referance)

I had this happen to me sometime ago. A friend of mine told me that I should place the HD in the freezer for a couple of hours and then plug it back in and it might, yes might work again, but only temperarily. Long enough for me to copy the drive over to another HD or get some files off it. I have yet to see if this works as I haven't had the time nor needed the info off that HD.

Freezer eh? who's gonna try it first? =P Sounds radical enough that it might just work. I'm gonna have to try it maybe.

Actually I'm in the process of doing it now. Now I have to know if it works or not. I will post my results later on in the day.

make sure to put the HDD in a plastic bag, cause of the excess moisture.

freezer huh? Well why not, never thought boiling a dvd would make it work either.

I was hoping that would be an option, but I have no idea how to do that. Any links on info about that?

It worked for me, i put it in my subzero turned it down to -5 left it in there for the night came back poped it in. Recognized and moved the info needed and its still working. Strange but true it worked.
