Not a full announcement yet, but will probably here something at Jump Festa (this weekend).

I've never seen the Anime as 100% of Shonen Jump Anime is ass-terrible compared to the vastly superior Manga (Bleach, anyone?) but I quite enjoy the Eyeshield 21 manga.

What? You need to watch some One Piece.

Anyway, my previous statement stands: E21's best hope is to clone Tecmo Bowl.

the fuck? how can the Bleach anime be "ass-terrible" when it's 90% faithful to the Manga? it's practically the manga animated.

I was about to ask if the Eyeshield 21 manga was good but then...

I'll be getting neither as the anime/manga really sucks.

:( oh well Slam Dunk, Prince Tennis and Hajime No Ippo are still the holy trinity of sports series.

In style, art and direction the anime complety fucked up, they turned Tite's pop culture fest into the usual generic fighting series, then again, the manga degraded into that with the Soul Society arc.

I really miss Zombie Powder. D=

Aishita no Joe, Major and Real may be better candidates than Prince of Tennis.

Visually it is 100% ass-terrible. The best part of Bleach is the dynamism of the detail of Tite Kubo's work, 100% of which is lost in the Anime. Sure, such is the nature of the transfer from Manga to Anime, but that doesn't mean I feel like watching it when I can just read the pitch-perfect Manga another zillion times. The obsession with fashion spread design, the line-work, the subtlety. It's all nowhere to be found in the Anime.

Well, manga or anime (I've seen both), Eyeshield 21 is a fun read. As sports drama goes, E21 is serious in the same way One Piece is: not very often. But the characters are fun to watch, there is some effort to consistently explain elements of football, and a whole lot of exaggeration goes around to make for some interesting special abilities. (ie: the giant egg shaped linemen, the nasa team, and so on). How the QB gets away with automatic weapons though... ;)

Anyway, the exaggerated nature of the series fits itself perfectly to a Tecmo Bowl or possibly Mega Man soccer approach, if you think of a simple to digest form of the sport with special ability characters. Why nobody has tried it yet is beyond me.

Well imo the character designs are frigging ugly in Eyeshield and the humour is vastly infererior to other mangas (for example One Piece). Not to mention that that there aren't many likeable characters in Eyeshield. I wanted to puke on the main hero after a couple of shows (and the manga isn't much better).

I'm about as anime/manga snob as they come and think Eyeshield 21 is perfectly entertaining for what it is - a goofy shounen sports drama about American football. The last bit is what really gives Eyeshield it's charm, due to the sheer improbability of it all. Granted, every other sport under the sun (or otherwise) has had a manga adaptation so it was inevitable that American football would have it's turn, but it's still a bit mind-boggling.

Besides, watching the team captain Himura being an utter cock is a hoot and a half.

All manner of time could be spent arguing the holy trinity of sports anime, but I'm still reasonably sure that Prince of Tennis isn't in the running. I'd give it to Star of the Giants, Ashita no Joe, and Aim for the Ace!, with Touch and Yawara as strong runner-up candidates and honorable mentions going to Attack No. 1 and Hajime no Ippo.
