Factor5 working exclusively with PS3 - Reason? Performance

GAF's Bob Woodward
I don't think I saw this, which is kind of surprising since it looks kind of old. I didn't see it myself till I saw it reported in one of the Sunday papers today. It seems like it was taken from Cnet.com (http://news.com.com/In+console+smackdown,+games+are+next+punch/2100-1043_3-5712174.html). Tucked away in an article on the new consoles and E3 is this:

In the wake of the consoles' unveiling, some developers are already leaning toward one platform.

"I was shocked by how powerful the new consoles are," said Julian Eggebrecht, president of the San Rafael, Calif.-based game development company Factor 5. "They should really free our development."

Eggebrecht said his company--which developed "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" for Nintendo's GameCube--would create games exclusively for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3.

The choice boiled down to performance, Eggebrecht said at E3 in Los Angeles. His company has worked with Microsoft's Xbox 360, but found PlayStation 3's 3.2GHz Cell chip offered more processing power. The additional performance allows the gang at Factor 5 to more easily simulate the real world for a better game experience, he said.

I know people had suspicions after Eggebrecht appeared on a video reel at the Sony conference, but this seems like confirmation.

What a load of crap. More realistic doesn't mean enhanced gameplay *cough* Gran Turismo 4 *cough*.

Those retards should learn a lil more about developing games.

Sounds like it would be their kind of system...lots of raw power to exploit from an exotic CPU design. Personally, though...unless they put up a game as decent as Turrican (Thornado where are you?!!!?), I really couldn't care less about their titles. They desperately need some new game designers as their software technology seems pretty awesome. At least something more significant then the bleh-fests that are their SW games, IMO. Looking forward to seeing their new shit just for the eye candy, anyway. :D

And after Epic has showed a preference for PS3 hardware this is the second developer attracted by PS3 power.
I wonder if the Bioware and Ninja Gaiden rumor is true.....

Indeed, it should be a graphics whore's wet dream. The first graphics that REALLY blew me away last gen were the first screenshots of Hoth in Rogue Leader on GC.

And now, there'll be no more wondering what they could do if they were on the most powerful hardware either..

Is this the defection then ? But this is not from MS ;).

Maybe it sort of was, since it was thought they were making X360 games before, but now seem to have changed their mind? Matt at IGN, at least, said outright that they were working on X360 games. Maybe this was one of the devs EGM was talking about too, moving projects from X360 to PS3.

Reminds me of that EGM rumor.

you should learn to be a little less obvious.

I just hope it's another shooter, because they can't so on foot missions :|
The graphics will be amazing, that's for sure. I wonder if it'll be another star wars games or something new. I wouldn't mind another star wars game if it had a monstrous amount of (smart) enemies and amazing graphics and explosions :D

Please don't make any PS3 Star Wars games Mr. Eggebrecht.

I can't wait to see what they have in store for us. I bet Factor 5 can pull off amazing things on the PS3. Rogue Squadron 2 on then cube, despite being a launch game, is still one of the top 5 best looking games on the cube IMO.

Ninty must have dumped F5 for the Audio section of REolution. Their PS3 game needs good gameplay as well as graphics otherwise F5 will sink without trace in the sea of Sony 3rd party developers. :D

More details:

Factor 5, best known for the "Star Wars: Rogue Squadron" series, has an even bigger announcement. After years of working exclusively with Nintendo, the San Rafael studio is signing on with Sony to develop two original titles for the just-unveiled PlayStation 3. It also has created a non-interactive demonstration that Sony is using to show the system's capabilities.

"It's a huge step up," said Factor 5 President Julian Eggebrecht of the PS3. "It's quite crazy, with production values so high."

As production costs skyrocket and publishers become less willing to pursue original ideas, Eggebrecht said, the opportunity to work with Sony was inviting.

"What's great is that Sony stepped up to the plate and said, 'Hey, we believe in you guys, so why don't we do something original together?'" Eggebrecht said.

Sounds like it won't be Star Wars, unless Sony has cut a deal with Lucasarts?

What was this?

Maybe they mean they're using it internally as a demo.

I'd say Harrison would have mentioned if one of the demos was from Factor5. But then again, he didn't mention little details with other demos like The Getaway being rendered with help from Cell etc. ;)

Defection!!! ;)

Btw, they're are Sony's second party dev now.

Why was this not announced at the press conference? :p Julian obviously feels free to talk about it, so you'd think Sony could announce it. Do you know if any of the publically presented demos were F5's?

so ... the "performance" point is moot if Sony's the publisher. Reminds me of last gen GC/Xbox launch, Eggebrech is like a prostitute or something.

Well that was another horrible move by Nintendo, not securing F5.

So I guess Pilot Wings is no more?

This isn't big though. :( I wanted one that brought Xbots to their knees crying and balling. I do hope Team Ninja put Ninja Gaiden 2 on PS3 exclusively. :D

Megaton's suck!

I don't know if makes it "moot", but it would appear to be one part of a bigger equation ;) F5 had much more investment in GC than they do in PS3, even with the publishing deal (they were actually involved in GC's hardware). His first quote suggests they went with Sony to a fair degree because of power. They could easily and happily tided themselves over with continued Lucasarts work, but they struck a deal with Sony. They had been working with X360 too, and I'm sure they were talking with MS..

There was certainly a choice there. If power played a part in that choice, then it's not like the claim isn't credible.

Why show all your cards at once? ;)

does factor 5 do anything else besides star wars game? you would think they were running out of material there. the gameplay in those game suck ass anyway. there, i said it.

No, they've been incapable of exhibiting game design talent since Turrican, IMO. The Rogue Squadron titles and their other LucasArts Star Wars and Indy games on the SNES were license milk-fests that got by on eye candy where the gameplay obviously didn't bother to do anything special, IMO. I know some people love those games, but I honestly can't see why. That, however, doesn't preclude them from doing some cool shit now. With Sony publishing them...and Sony seems to have good taste in development partners...I'd say that it would have to be some genuinely cool shit to put their money behind. If anything, it ought to look great.

Agreed.

Itagaki is the prostitute of only one corporation, gotta respect that :lol

Why is Team Ninja working on DS ip then?

As for Factor 5, without a strong license they are going to get lost in the sea of ps3 dev's.

And who has Lucasarts next gen is a shocker.

Are you saying that developers that were almost exclusively on GameCube CAN ACTUALLY go on another platform that isn't Xbox? Wow...

I expect Mr. Eggbrecht (note to journos - it's not Eggebrecht) to be very vocal about PS3 vs. Xbox 360 power difference in the upcoming months. :)

Because there will be no original IP's next generation that stand up and get noticed? That's silly talk....

They sure did make beautiful GameCube games...But did any of those have OUTSTANDING gameplay? Not really. Decent gameplay, but not killer.

exactly!

f5=decent visuals, ass gameplay.

Well, I liked the original Rogue Squadron on N64, even though looking back on it, the quality of the missions was really hit or miss. Besides the gfx, Rogue Leader did nothing for me, and I didn't even bother with Rogue Squadron 3.

Still, I'm very interested to see what they're working on, if only to see the no doubt exceptional gfx their PS3 games will have.

btw.

how lame... factor 5 copied the turrican screen from the manowar - kings of metal album
