I just received a call from my parents - something seems to be going down. The istanbul bridges are closed down and armed soldiers are blocking them:

In Ankara, fighter jets are flying. Police have blocked the roads.

My parents said they heard gunfire as well. Situation very fresh, nothing in the news yet.

What the fuck is happening? Has anyone else heard anything? Here are some journalists tweeting about it:

Note that the situation is developing and journalism in Turkey is handicapped by Erdogan so take everything with a grain of salt.

Worth noting, the Turkish military has a constitutional clause where they are supposed to overthrow the government if the government poses a threat to secularity. This has happened before, with the backing of NATO. Every time so far, this has been a net positive, removing Islamists and installing democracy. However, this time it's unclear if the military is still driven by the secular remnants (Erdogan gutted them) or Erdogan's Islamist rival Fethullah Gulen. Will update as the situation develops.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has been taken to a secret location by forces loyal to him and extensive security measures are being taken to protect him, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reports.

Worth noting that whether Erdogan was democratically elected is quite dubious as every time there has been massive electoral fraud. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Elector...uring_the_Turkish_general_election,_June_2015

MSNBC just said Erdogan is seeking asylum is Germany.

"Turkish TV broadcasts a message from Erdogan claiming he's in control and will punish the coup leaders"
The following items seem to be of dubious veracity:
#Turkey Erdogan in airplane, refused landing at #Istanbul, now trying to seek asylum in Germany, US defense officials say, @MSNBC

"A coup attempt in Turkey involves a substantial part of the military and "not just a few colonels", a European Union source monitoring events in the EU candidate country said on Friday."
""They control several strategic points in Istanbul. Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing," the source said."

There's too much contradictory information out there right now, so I'll stop updating the OP unless something major is confirmed.

Maybe Erdogan said fuck it and declared martial law?

Hope everything turns out okay but it doesn't look likely.

Another possibility is a military coup to overthrow Erdogan. I am pretty sure that has happened a few times in Turkey's history.

I would be very surprised if either is the case though.

While it has happened before, Erdogan crippled the military and weeded out everyone who opposed him years ago with his made up charges and generals have been in prison without charge for years now so that's less likely these days.

If it looks like a coup and smells like a coup...

It's obviously just Twitter hearsay, but I've seen a couple of people mention that Erdogan could've been killed.

The military is deployed in Istanbul? By whom and against whom?

I get that Erdogan is a shit dude but wishing a coup on the country and the region is not the way to resolve those grievances. Lots of people are about to suffer, not just in Turkey.

There's definitely something going on. Read on Twitter it's the first time military troops and vehicles are seen in urban Turkish areas since 1997. Very curious situation.

Turkey's been through several coups. It's part of the reason it's been so progressive compared to other Muslim countries ironically enough...
Yeah, the military's historically been a failsafe against religion.

I wonder if (GoT spoilers)
this is effectively a Jon Snow plans to resettle the Wildlings situation
is that a good thing?
In this situation, probably.
