God I hate hippies. Seriously, wtf? My kid isn't going to turn out to be some PC hippie dumbass doofus. and that's just because I'm going to make sure to fuck her life up enough by saying she failed, dammit. jkasl;fjasdljf seriously, WTF?!

LONDON (Reuters) - The word "fail" should be banned from use in classrooms and replaced with the phrase "deferred success" to avoid demoralising pupils, a group of teachers has proposed.

Members of the Professional Association of Teachers (PAT) argue that telling pupils they have failed can put them off learning for life.

A spokesman for the group said it wanted to avoid labelling children. "We recognise that children do not necessarily achieve success first time," he said.

"But I recognise that we can't just strike a word from the dictionary," he said.

The PAT said it would debate the proposal at a conference next week.

I missed the word "hippie." Maybe we read a different article.

No but the words PC assholes are written all over that article. Damn, the nest generation is going to practically be born to rebell.

Parents: "Hey,! How did you do on your test today?"
Kid: "I deferred Success!"
Parents: "Huh?"
Kid: "I deferred Success!"
Parents: "Oh... okay. That's good then?"
Kid: "I don't know... but it doesn't give me the feeling that I need to try harder!"

I never get the point of something like this. It won't take long for “deferred success” to register with the kid just as “failure” does. In the end, the only thing that changes is that the word “success” is cheapened.

The private school I went to did not allow their staff to use the word "fail" with their students which was funny being that we had the same scale everyone else used (i.e. A, B, C, D, F). "F" meant "did not pass." I never "didn't pass anything" but whenever I had to grade papers for instructors, I made sure to put "FAIL" on all "did not pass" papers. Surprisingly, several students cried when that was put on their paper rather than "did not fail." I guess this is an argument for the ridiculous teachers.

Just call it a dream deferred and be done with it.

Seriously, most kids are smart enough to know what a poor grade is call it an F, failing or "deferred success", it all translates to "you sucked at this test/quiz/project/etc.".

haha, I did this too. One time, I wrote "Do you even speak English?" :lol

When I heard about teachers not allowed to use red pens for correcting homework/test, I just laughed it off. Then about not teaching competions in contest and allow everyone to "win," I got a bit annoyed. Now this shit is just getting fucking rediculous.

Bah, just because they failed a test doesn't mean the person is a failure or that they will fail in life(although they might). Geez, some students need to get a grip and move on.

I propose the following system, grading across a scale of:

Awesome!
Beautiful!
Congratulations!
Divine!
Fantastic!

So that no child will have to face the disappointment of understanding how much of a Fantastic! they are.

:lol What will be the term used when a person drops dead? Deferred life expectancy? Fucking morons.

Now, now. They're just differently smart, that's all.

Not that I want to introduce elements of reality to this story, by the way, but the suggestion was chosen as a deliberately controversial/inflammatory debate topic, and the people who actually get to make decisions aren't even considering it.

Education Secretary Ruth Kelly has dismissed suggestions that the concept of "failure" should be removed from school in favour of "deferred success".

She said she gave the idea - which will be discussed at a teachers' conference - "nought out of 10".

When young people grow up they have to deal with success and failure

Not in my house, dammit.

Devils advocate:

I recall plenty of kids in the public schools I went to that had pretty much given up on education. By elementary or middle school, they pretty much knew that they weren't going to college and stopped trying to study.

Perhaps a little more encouragment and a few less times being called a failure would have helped them.

Failure will still be interpreted as failure...

even some of the dumbest kids at school understand how and why its beneficial to succeed in exams. If they're getting "fail" like grades in homework and mock exams and aren't encouraged to feel they can turn that around.. THATS when they're gonna start being some kind of self fulfilling failure prophecy.

You're laughing now, but they are actually removing the notation system in Quebec for all grades this fall, and make it impossible to fail. You'll have only comments on your report card. Yes, communist country. Again those who wants to perform won't have any reasons, and those who didn't before won't even have a purpose anymore.
