Director: Yasuhiro Takemoto (FMP series, Lucky Star)
Script: Shoji Gatoh (FMP series, Druaga series)
Character Design: Futoshi Nishiya (Nichijou)

Good art, as expected of modern KyoAni.

Formulaic, but fuck it! With this, I can bask in a bit of hype for a KyoAni project again, for at least a little while.

Bro-ON meets K-ON?

Do want.

It's a mystery, actually. Plot summary from the manga adaptation:

The story of Hyoka follows a boy named Hōtarō who is not assertive about getting involved, but was ordered by his older sister to join the classic literature club. In the club, he gets close to the truth about an incident, involving a female member's uncle, which happened 33 years ago. The "energy-saving" boy is joined by an inquisitive girl in this adolescent mystery.

I have no delusions, this is going to be school antics for some 10 episodes.

No Yoshida, no sale!

And yeah, BokuTomo/Waganai was strangely :firehawk, and it felt that way more because they probably couldn't figure out any other way to end the series. It's also weird that they put so much on the
reunion
but it felt fairly anticlimatic when it happened. Of course, I guess I'm not sure what else I could have expected them to do otherwise.

Guilty Crown 11

Psycho kid finally killed his father. Protip: if you have a child who's a sociopath, don't neglect him, traumatize him, and give him access to military weapons.

Nooooo Dan! ;_; At least he did something cool before going out.

Lots of people were complaining about how wimpy Shu acted last episode, apparently incapable of recognizing even the most basic of character arcs.

Who's this douche bag?

Same here. Though I will say that I've come to think: not much, really.
Acknowledging the awkwardness of the situation and quickly moving on was all that they really could have done without having Yozora go more dere than she did, or outright destroying the chances at their romance later.

I suppose if they were crazy, they could have just jumped on each other! It think the show would have probably been better served if Kodoka had just friendzoned the entire harem at the start (since, in the show anyway, he doesn't seem to notice that he's surrounded by girls who all want him) and just focused on the idea of this "friends club" and the development of the characters along that front.
At least it would have made the ending a bit more meaningful if it was about friendship and not forward looking potential romances.

Dan will never be forgotten after his missile scene a few episodes ago.

I do want Daryl to finally have some moment of fame
though cold killing GHQ commander be fame worthy?

Penguins FINAL

Yeah, I think we're going to spend some time discussing this one.

That was basically the ending I was expecting except... quite a bit more stylish than I was expecting

Penguindrum FINAL

;_; After this week anime is saved no more. Everything that happened just, wow. Some of it I expected, some of it I definitely did not. That ending. Fuck I am so happy.

I can't believe it's over. It's been so much fun, you guys. SO MUCH goddamn fun.

I can't wait for our discussions!

Mawaru Penguindrum 24 END

;__;

Wow, I was expecting an ending like that but that blew me away. I can't believe this show's finally over ;_;

One last SEIZON SENRYAKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Toradora OVA

Having just one extra episode is such a cocktease :(

I'd take a one-cour show of just sidestories, at least it'd be something!

Anywho, this show is at its best when Ryuji is being Ryuji and the OVA had that in spades. It's nothing special if you thought the show was okay, but I imagine the people who loved it will love this too.
The most boring part of Toradora! was always Ryuuji, because he was actually a pretty well-set kid and such wasn't as easy to get into drama with him. This OVA was all Ryuuji so that's why I wasn't enchanted with it.

This show is going to be so :firehawk, it's stupid. I'm not excited, it seems boring and generic, and that picture doesn't do much to make me feel otherwise.
  1. Weak, pathetic spikey haired male protagonist with sour look on his face, check.
  2. Yamato Nadeshiko 1 head shorter than MC and an airheaded look (but will most likely be brilliant), check.
  3. Goofy, bromantic foil, also shorter than MC with designated non-MC hairstyle, check.
  4. Petite, short haired girl who gets on bromantic foil's case and totally acts like a tsundere towards the bro (but secretly harbors feelings for MC), check.
We'll see how it turns out. Since it's KyoAni, I'm required to watch at least the first 6 episodes, but beyond that, well let's just say I don't have much hope with a non-supernaturally goofy version of Haruhi...

they might pull some narnia type shit and discover another world connected to the janitors room
The uncle is secretly the King of the otherworld and disappeared to defend his kingdom from invaders

Oh look another bland formulaic school crap staring "that guy" and his friends, if studio kyoani is going to waste there animators on stuff like this, then there better off dead.

Could that picture be any more generic?

well
in their defense, they are catering to an audience that is often a certain (school) age
and having new shows for them is expected
its our fault for aging and still keeping up with it!

I think you are overanalyzing it.
All i see is potential hnnngh.

Penguindrum 24

I liked that, I liked that a lot. Sure I need to rewatch the series a few more times to get everything, but I am happy with that ending.

Penguindrum: I came in all ready to hate it and now I realize I can't.

I'm a sucker for these kind of endings.

Lol, I've long stopped hoping for anything all that deep, or even remotely different from these derivatives. Bokutomo doesn't even really pretend to be something other, and shippers gotta have that ambiguity to fuel their shipping and such. I'm in it for the romance at this point.

Honestly, it's why I actually prefer the single gender shows. Since anime romances almost always go nowhere (Mashiro being the extremely odd standout this season), I'm almost happy for shows that are just about friendships more than anything else.

Of course, as that GAF thread suggested, men and women can't be friends with each other! (Or did they actually come to another conclusion? I never did read it).

With BokoTomo itself, as much as I hate to admit it, Yozora was set up to be the "winner" anyway. It just feels like once the series had some readership, the author had to backpedal hard so as to please the Sena fanboys.

Now that everything is over, I think I need to spend some time before the next season starts marathoning everything. Oh god, the overload incoming.

Guilty Crown
Most of you seemed to have dropped the show already but holy shit show seems to be getting good now.

I know it's been said it's going to be a 2-part show so ~12-12 or ~24-24?

Penguin drum 24 - Great ending, it was beautiful, awe-inspiring, thematically-consistent, and had some powerful sequences, but at the same time it didn't really bring all the plot elements or characterization of the previous episodes to a satisfying whole, still the ending was a solid culmination of all the elements that made MPD enjoyable to begin with, so I can't complain to much.

Penguindrum 24

It ended kind of the way I expected,
though I figured it would be Kanba and Himari dying, not Shouma.
I'm glad the show ended up recovering from some of the issues (pacing, clunky use of flashbacks) it had mid-show.
