I'm always so lost whenever Geass comes up. The first season aired in the period when I didn't care about anime at all, and while I started to get back into anime when R2 aired, I didn't really care.
I feel like I'm missing a lot, but I never really feel like it's worth watching.

huh, so it turns out that Valvrave WAS ripping off Code Geass after all.
Depends on your expectations. Say, If you're the type of person who watches Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and questions why the Pillar Men don't just break Joseph in half rather than playing silly games with him, or object to how a Nazi soldier like Stroheim is treated, then this kind of show isn't going to be very enjoyable either. The same thing with Death Note including all its exaggerated gestures, mind tricks and constant one-upmanship.
Code Geass combines entertainment, including but not limited to the crazy kind, with interesting yet nevertheless unrealistic scenarios. The second season has a rough start and ultimately leans heavily towards the crazy side, but still does a few other pretty good things that you might or might not appreciate in the end.
That was rather amusing, though I only ever shared a fraction of his frustration.
But on the bright side, at least he can watch Valvrave and enjoy it now!

Basically that enemy commanders can talk to each other showing respect, soldiers having huge respect for their superiors and stuff like that. Emiya would have disdained that kind of stuff, as it's pretty much an extension of chivalry.
