That's simply a FAMITSU poll, not even a japanese poll. Most of the readers have very precise tastes. See Most Wanted vs real sales...

Still, I'm happy for a few things :

- There's Tactics ogre very high... Please, Square-Enix, I want one or two new entries in the series, DS would be a blast.

- Sakura taisen appears (as for 4, it's a game for fans, short, but still I'm not surprised fans, including me, liked it)

- lots of (old) games I like that I didn't expect to see : Sim city, original Puyo, original F-zero, Kung fu, Wizardry...



But please : what is Machi ?????
That's the only one game I don't remember, and it's in the top ten !

I'm guessing this list was done by hardcore gamers, I am still surprised to see that Tactics Ogre has maintained its popularity and legacy all these years despite selling only 300,000 copies or so in Japan.

And damn, can't believe FFX and FF7 displaced the great DQ3.
DQ3 > all other console RPGs.

Awesome list... well I don't agree with a few things (FFX being number 1, for instance)... it's great to see the DQ games place so highly and it's a much better list than a Top 100 list as voted by Game Informer readers (I shudder to think what that would look like!). Valkyrie Profile and Chrono Trigger should have placed higher, and I'm surprised DQ4 placed the second lowest out of all the DQs - that's probably my favorite one.

I'm in the US and that list would fucking blow too. I'm more slanted toward eastern games than I am western games though so I don't find this top 100 to be apalling.

Moving away from the American education systems, I have to admit it's a little overwhelming to see a list of the top 100 games ever with so many entries I not only haven't played but have never even heard of. What the heck is Machi? If it's the 5th best game ever I should at least know what system it's on.

EDIT - It's a FMV game!? How is that possible? Japan makes me sad sometime...

EDIT 2 - I can't believe someone is defending a FF game being #1 All Time. I enjoy the series, but it's hardly even a "game." Or maybe I just expect some great gameplay from the best game ever. Some FFs (and Chrono Trigger) should be on this list, but I'd rather see something Stephen Hawking couldn't play take the top spot. I can't believe Super Mario World didn't crack the top 50. And neither did Tetris.

I dunno... madden may rank higher... along with Cabella's Dangerous hunts, and of course, nascar games, maybe a smackdown or two...

I can't really disagree too too much... Naturally here and there i'd could say, "eh, this should be higher, this lower", but it's not too bad...

Japanese players are basically not hardcore gamers. They are more mainstream than us and mainstream there means pretty-story games.

You're dead wrong. EGM's list would contain RPGs, adventure games, shooters, driving games, RTS, platform games - in short, a massive variety. As opposed to this blinkered, near-sighted alphabet of RPGs.
