Yes. It has mini games.

But the main appeal of the story is the telenovela aspect. I remember playing Yakuza 1 and one of my most anticipated storylines was "who is Haruka's daddy?" so yes it is a telenovela.

It even has slaps to the face.

Yes, Yakuza is a telenovela with minigames and the minigames factor into the telenovela aspect. You know how in telenovela a storyline will just drag and drag and it goes where the winds takes it? Yakuza is like that. The mini games are like one of those weird filler episodes in between the plot lines that never end. It all works in the end.

I'm so confused with this series at this point but at least it's not Kingdom Hearts! I just went into the KH 2.8 thread, said "what the fuck" after watching the trailer, and clicked back. At least I can kind of understand what's going on in Yak.
 
Currently playing through Yakuza 4, but so far 1 was definitely the most Telenovela. 2 is just straight up badass.

It's not THAT confusing. 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 are all continuing stories of Kazuma Kiryu as the years progress and 0 is the origin point.
 
Okay now that the initial shock has wear down, yeah I can agree with you guys this must be a ruse. They wouldn't put something like this in the prologue and announce it so casually if it was true.

Though I've been with the series from the very first game so while I was writing that I couldn't help but feel like a father who is trying to convince himself that his innocent daughter hasn't actually done it yet, lol

Should I play Yakuza 0 before 1? I am assuming it's going to tell the story of how the MC of Yakuza 1 ends up in jail? The story of Yakuza 0 does take place before Yakuza 1 so yes you would get more background on Nishiki, Kiryu, Majima and other characters from Yakuza 1 and their relationships with each other.

Though, Kiryu going to prison in Yakuza 1 has nothing to do with events of Yakuza 0 and will be completely explained in Yakuza 1 itself.

Yakuza 0 and Kiwami (remake of Yakuza 1) are definitely made with the intention of player starting with the former and moving on to the latter. But I'm not sure how that transition would work with Yakuza 0 ---> Yakuza 1 since the gameplay is soooo much limited in Y1 compared to Y0 which can be considered a stylish action brawler with a nice amount of depth.
 
the hostess segment of the yakuza presentation is awkward, also don't get the appeal as a gameplay feature it was rather shallow in 5.
 
Damn it Haruka, didn't you learn anything from Kiriyu. Yakuza is all about the twist so expect the kid to be revealed to belong to 5 people before the 6th person is revealed who is the actual mother.

Haruka will wake up from her coma at the end and reveal that the child is a robot from the future. It's a lead in to Binary Domain 2.

Or it might be a time loop. We've never seen Kiriyu mum if I remember. What if Kiriyu is the actual baby and has to be sent back in time to make sure the timeline isn't interrupted.

That beat takeshi gif is just wow!

Also reading the famitsu article now a bit. The games got a tie up with the Rizap gyms, which run a lot of commercials and all on tv here in Japan . Has pictures of Kiryu seemingly in one in the game or mimicking it. Gave me a huge laugh seeing that!
 
Still need to play Yakuza 5 but I can't be arsed to hook up the PS3.

Also good to see creepyGAF back lusting after their 16 year old waifu.

lol. I was definitely expecting a twist there. Not being the chairman but someone working for them. The twist about his son was unexpected but it was so random and still makes no sense so I wouldn't even care that it got spoiled. I was also surprised that Ms. Park's death was real. Totally expecting a fake out.
 
How was Yakuza 0's plot? Because right now I'm pretty convinced that we'll never get a Yakuza game with good writing ever again.

I love the series but god damn this shit is just reaching ridiculous levels of absurd drama-hooks.
