PS5 software sales in Japan are abysmal. It doesn't make sense with nearly 4.5million consoles in circulation and rising fast.

What are they playing?

The most likely explanation is f2p games like Genshin Impact.

Digital sales aren't that high either, we can see that from the PS charts.

We have no idea how good/bad game sales actually are based on charts that do not mention specific sales figures.

I haven't purchased a physical game at launch since 2014 and even then the game wasn't a full-priced game.

I would hazard that given smaller living spaces digital probably represents a significantly higher portion of sales in Japan than in the West. When you add on top of that the lack of a Gamestop equivalent in Japan, there's really no driving force behind physical sales. Even when you look at Amazon, it's not nearly as established and I don't even know if Famitsu covers Amazon.

Switch on the other hand has VERY limited onboard memory. Zelda alone takes up half the onboard memory. You basically HAVE to buy physical or buy fairly expensive expansion packs, which you probably don't want to do for a kid.

If the Switch 2 has significantly larger internal storage, we're going to see Famitsu as pretty much useless.

PS Charts don't show numbers, just ranks. I'd be willing to bet digital has skyrocketed in Japan since PC gaming is rising.

They don't have specific sales numbers, but they give us a good guide. For example, we know that:

1. In the whole of July, the third best selling PS game digitally in Japan was Exoprimal
2. The physical sales of Exoprimal were under 7,000 (probably much less)

Which means that, even if we are generous and say Exoprimal sold 6,500 copies and had a 75% digital ratio, that means it got to third in the rankings by selling 19,500 in a whole month.

That doesn't indicate strong digital sales
PS Charts don't show numbers, just ranks. I'd be willing to bet digital has skyrocketed in Japan since PC gaming is rising.
I'm sure PC will affect a game's overall digital share, but not its PS digital share.
