I wonder how many PS4s still exist in the channels. OLED was a genius move really; get in on the double dippers. With Valve doing it now, I expect the Portal to follow suit.

Good list. Mario dominate the market, HL in top 10, Pikmin still selling good, PS4 selling more than Xbox.

Switch is popular in Japan, eh?

Would definitely be the console I'd choose if I weren't a PlayStation devotee.

Xbox Series - 2 133
PS4 - 2,080

I always pointed out that Sony had no need of a Series S of their own, because they have a PS4. The predecessor console is a perfectly valid product for those who want to game on a budget. Sure, the games are old, but if you never played them before then it is new to you. This isn't even a shocking thing; they have done this for their entire history except when they failed to make a truly cheap PS3.

PS5 still on track to beat PS2's 2004 sales. 2.37m for PS5 this year with December to go to beat 2.57m. Then they can officially say this is the best year for a PS console's sales in Japan for 20 years.
This shows that even in a mobiles and PC world a dedicated device can still find its place if the price is correct for the specs. In many cases I guess PS5 is used to play free games or even cheap PS4 games. Consoles are far from being dead even in Japan. If the hardware / software is enticing compared to PC, then people will still buy it.

Playstation as a brand peaked in 1997 / 1998 in Japan basically. Interesting to see this data. I had no idea.
The PS2/PSP both sold more than the PS1 lifetime but never beat those two years so yeah this might be the time when the brand was strongest. Japan has a very strong affinity for Handhelds which may be part of the reason for the decline. I mean the Wii sold 12.7m, the PS2 sold 22m but the 3DS sold 24.6m. A console that sold over 155m globally was beaten by a console that sold around 76m. Half the global sales but stronger Japan sales.

The DS, 3DS and Switch have sold more than any Home Console has ever sold in Japan and the PSP sold almost double the PS3 despite their global sales being very similar.

A handheld console tends to have a higher chance to be purchased in multiple quantity in a household than a TV console cause the latter tend to be shared among the people in a household whereas handheld consoles tend to be more personal.
In Japan the adoption of the Wii was heavily impaired by the soft support by the local third-party publishers:

In US third-party software on Wii performed much much better:

I disagree with Switch Hardware being a disappointment. It’s still regularly top hardware, that’s great especially coming into 6-7yr or possibly its last holiday before Switch 2.

Its doing very well for its age, but its abit disapppointing relative to what it was doing ealrier in the eyar. In late Summer and early Autumn, it was selling noticeably above its 2017 / 2018 levels.

I thought it would carry that strength into the holiday season. But on the contrary, November 2023 was the Switch's worst November ever in terms of hardware.

The real highlight for Switch this holiday will be software, expesically since it actually got two major third party releases during a holiday period.
