Guess I was super close with my FF7 Rebirth prediction from last week's Famitsu Sales thread.
Dragon Quest XI* - 950.338
Final Fantasy XV - 716.649
Final Fantasy VII Remake - 702.853
Kingdom Hearts III - 640.406
Dragon Quest Heroes - 566.569
Dragon Quest Heroes II - 381.928
Persona 5 - 344.854
Final Fantasy XVI - 336.027
Tales of Arise - 201.798
Persona 5 Royal - 201.448

Curious where Rebirth will land when we get famitsu's sales data for current week.

250k first week sales should be more than achievable I think.

FF7 rebirth didn’t move the needle on PS5 console! 😮

I was expecting 50K+ for PS5. well

Nintendo right now.

Yea I’m shocked by PS5 sales. I’m in camp that dislike the episodic release of FF7 remake. It looks like there are more fans like me that just isn’t interested in it. At least not until full story is completed.

I was basically laughed at bringing that up early on. But it’s likely just part of the reason, Japan loves portables is more of the reason!
I was kidding of course, but there may be a point to it. It would also explain why Nintendo devs on average seem to be so allergic to any forms of AA - the TVs are so tiny it doesn't matter.

I didn’t really think about that, I’ve just the art style of Nintendo games. I’ve always a fan of the cartoon/Anime art styles. But yea their style lends itself to lower spec consoles. But most importantly their style seems to still look almost as good over time!

At this point SE could release a unanimous 100 metacritic score perfect FF game.

And Japan will just say meh.

I think they should focus more on growing that western audience with FF. With ps5 and pc combined sales should do well.

I'm not adverse to the art style, as such, but the fact remains that most Switch games can look really rough on a modern 4K TV of any decent size. Especially as the rendering resolution can be way below 720p even when docked. Switch 2, or whatever it will be called, can't come soon enough IMHO.

...but this is not a comment on the quality of Nintendo's (or their partners) output, the games are great. They just can end up looking like ass by contemporary standards.

The decline of Final Fantasy in Japan is truly something to behold. I wasn't expecting Rebirth to come close to matching Remake's numbers, but a 440k drop? That's fucking shocking.

You're comparing pre order numbers for one game against a full week of sales for the rest

Why are people so desperate to see this game fail? it's actually baffling, your just making stuff up to paint it a certain way at this point

I really didn't see any post release engagement with Rebirth as it did with Remake and even XVI.

FF XVI also had only 4 days of the week counted and a smaller install base.

Lol. The numbers are there dude… Is ok to be in denial mode. Hold your breath for the next week numbers then…
Oh be quiet, it's clear what your agenda is from looking at your post history

I'm sure your switch with your library of 4 legitimate games is great fun, maybe you should play it more instead of running this little battle of yours

No one cares about FF anymore.
If they release a ff6 remake on the switch, guarantee it would be a sales record.
Switch is a monster

While at first glance, those numbers do seem low, but I think they are probably in line with what SE was expecting:

-Slightly less than 5million PS5s sold in Japan thus far
-Slightly less than 10million PS4s sold in Japan thus far

The game is a PS5 exclusive. There is literally 50% less hardware to sell this game on. What were some of you expecting? a 1 in 5 attach rate? Get a grip.

Its almost as no one talked for days and weeks like the first game did on social media, it just went by even after its acclaimed reception.
That's what I thought you were saying. I've noticed the same thing.

Comparison with another classic remake

02./00. [NSW] Super Mario RPG <RPG> (Nintendo) {2023.11.17} (¥5.980) - 301.334 / NEW <60-80%>
01./00. [PS5] Final Fantasy VII Rebirth <RPG> (Square Enix) {2024.02.29} (¥8.980) - 262.656 / NEW

Fair enough! Yea, let’s not derail!

Right now we're in the window of time where Square announced the sales figures for XVI and Remake when those games launched. If we get radio silence from Square on Rebirth's sales WW over the next few days, it may be safe to assume it's not doing great WW either.

I'll never understand the "wait until all parts are out" crowd. You do know you are setting yourself up for a straight 250-300 hours to play them all in a row, right?

We all laughed at him. But this prediction was prophetic. He truly is an expert in Japanese culture:

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the japanese public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase FFXIII for either system, nor will they purchase any of Square's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Square has alienated an entire market with this move.

Square, publicly apologize and cancel FFXIII for 360 or you can kiss your business goodbye.

Time will not be an issue for me when I get engrossed in a game or watching movie/tv series. It’s the wait of sequels and of unfinished stories that is worst for me! I’d rather not start. I don’t care about FOMO!

Yeah, bad sales. I do think it could have a high digital ratio, but still, not a very good look. How's the WOM in Japan? Maybe it could have some strong legs going forward, but we will see.

Playstation as a force looks about done in Japan from a software sales perspective? Basically every franchise has seen big decline looking at the biggest launches:

I don't know how you can have a console that's almost sold 6mil units and yet the software sales are this abysmal. I've asked before a couple of months ago if perhaps consoles are being bought in Japan to sell outside the country? The disconnect between the hardware sales vs software sales is just huge. Even if we assumed 40-50% of all sales are digital (probably more like 30-40%?), the disconnect is still apparent.
