Far Cry 3 PC performance thread

What I want is for the developer to have included a one button no-HUD toggle.

"Press H to toggle HUD on/off"

Really? This couldn't be included?

Do we have a bat signal for Durante, yet?

Just kidding, but after the miracles be pulled off with DS (including toggle HUD), I can't imagine there's a good excuse for why FC3 doesn't have this option beyond "Meh, we just didn't.".

Considering the way they designed the HUD, I don't think the people in charge of it had much of a clue about anything.

i7 860 @ 3.8 8gb ram, GTX 680 310.70 beta 1080p

Everything on ultra with HBSO and 2x MSAA has me so far between 50-60fps. I typically don't tweak much past in game & nvidia control panel settings. What are the smart things to lower a bit to get the framerate a bit more stable? In the mean time, i'm reading to see if I can find a trend.

Hella smoother with the new beta drivers as long as I set the post fx to medium. 2560x1440 @1080p 4xMSAA maxed out at 60 fps most of the time. But a couple of instances of major hitching here and there, like a second or two lag while waiting for data to load. Texture/LOD pop hasn't been fixed.

I am playing with the 360 controller for Windows and it works fine.

There is an option to enable/disable aim assist.

Have you had any input lag problems? Whenever I try to use the sticks, it doesn't register movement until a half second later. It's like Killzone 2 all over again.

the game runs much better now. I wonder if they turn on DX11 multithreading or whatever it's called.

Am I better off sticking with DX9 over DX11 for a consistent 60 FPS at 1080P? Right now I'm running DX11 with 2xMSAA, HDAO, and the other video setting maxed out except for Post FX (medium) and Shadows (high).

Specs:
2500K at 4.5GHz
GTX 680
8GB RAM

Well the DX11 executable was missing from some parts of the previous driver, and people had to add it manually in inspector. So maybe the fixes they had in for DX9 weren't affecting DX11 in the previous beta driver.

I've switched between the 2 and haven't noticed a difference personally but then again this game is rather odd just going but various posts I've read. To me this game looks no better than other recent games e.g. borderlands 2, dishonored, skyrim and I can max those games out yet this one I run at medium with no aa, nothing and not even hit 40fps =\

Getting sub-par performance on my 7970.

dx11 vs. dx9 doesn't seem to change much, but i basically get 45-55 on Ultra, but it's just wrecking my GPU. Fans are going wild.

Running with DX11 and most settings at max except PostFX and MSAA. I don't know what the former does, but it's a performance killer.

Playing this on PC, as excited as I was, reminds me why PC gaming is inferior for titles with primary console counterparts.

I don't want to continually open and close a game to find a sweet spot. I don't want to trade off frame rate and visual fidelity for some ever-unknown perfect medium. I want the experience tailored to me by the developer, I want to lounge on my couch, and I want a controller in my hand. This isn't Quake 3 Arena, and I don't need to sit two inches from my screen with a mouse in hand.

Going to be buying Far Cry 3 for the Xbox 360 tomorrow.

I keep getting a "Far Cry 3 has stopped working" error, Steam version.

Tried reverifying the Cache and every time I try to reverify, it acquires a different file so I'm not sure if it's hanging on reacquiring the same file, or if it's grabbing a new file each time. :(

Oh, Ubi...

Restarting Steam fixed it, tho

You could just connect to your TV and put the settings on medium/high depending on your rig and have an infinitely better experience than on 360.

Obsessing over the perfect settings is part of the fun of PC gaming but if it's not for you, just don't do it.

I gave up trying to get a stable 60 fps sweetspot on my measly gtx 460 (I refuse to upgrade until new console gen hits), so I simply cranked everything to near max, limited the fps to 30 in MSI afterburner, and plugged a controller in.

It's like having a really REALLY good looking console game. And still way nicer than playing on an actual console.

Anyone here with a GTX 580, I am curious to see what your performance is like.

I've got a 2600k, 580 3GB, and 8GB of RAM and I am just barely breaking 30fps at 1080p all settings on Ultra (except Post Processing), and DX11 (4x MSAA).

Do what I do: max everything out and match the intended frame rate on console versions. Borderlands 2, Spec Ops: The Line, Need For Speed: Most Wanted and others; I locked them all at 30 FPS.

I refuse to be a 60 FPS snob, having to upgrade my machine every few months because of unoptimised game engines. The perceived life of my current hardware is extended because a drop in frame rate won't be noticed.

Wow. I get much better performance with the new drivers. I was running on DX11 Ultra with 2x MSAA yesterday. I didn't check the framerate, but it was running smooth enough for me.

How are you targeting the frame rate? I like this advice and I think I'm gonna emulate your philosophy. Do you match vsync settings?

I used to love PC gaming - at least I think I did - but now, I've turned into the lazy gamer.

This makes no sense.
You don't need to dive into config files to get shitty framerates with constant tearing.
Just choose "optimal" in the settings menu and be done with it, and it will probably look & run better than any console version.

Hmmm....I started the game in "safe mode" since that was an option on the Uplay client and it booted up fine...any idea why it won't start otherwise?

The best tip from this thread so far was to turn off the in-game vsync and force it through drivers, that really helped! Playing this cranked all the way save for MSAA on a 660ti and it's doing fairly well. Not "perfect" but phenomenal-looking.

Why does it make no sense?

Optimal for me shows "low" across the board. I have an i7 @ 2.67 GHz with 9GB RAM and an 512MB HD 4800 video card, and I've upgraded to the latest ATI beta drivers.

Maybe I'm kidding myself and I deserve the low across the board, but... that's not why I got it on PC. I'm just tired of dealing with trade-offs on PC performance. I'm going to go cry in a corner now.

Well you can't really complain about performance with a such a PC.

Those games need a gaming rig to run well, no surprise here.

Your CPU & RAM is mighty fine, but your video card is what, 5 years old? What did you expect? I'm sorry, with that video card, I don't know how to help you. I'm afraid there is not much room for tweaks..

Anyway to get rid of the texture and object pop-in from a distance? Seems like things disappear in the environment sometimes too.

Must be an engine issue because I am getting that too here and there

otherwise game is running ok so far

Nvidia Surround-@ 5760x1080 res

getting 35-50 FPS everything maxed w/DX9

On Far Cry 3 I set the VSync thing to 2. Any game where I'm unable to lock in-game or by modifying the game's files I'll use Dxtory to lock.

This game does NOT like to be ALT+TAB'd in Fullscreen mode. Holy shit.

I straight up have to end the Task in Program Manager if I try to.

I've played the game for hours in DX11, then switched to DX9 and played a few hours more. I noticed absolutely zero difference between the two, except for the fact that I got about 15-20fps more when running in DX9.

Does anyone actually notice a difference? I was running with MSAA off in both modes.

This is on a 660ti @ 1080p

dx9 and dx11 look the same to me

You need to put the .dll and .ini files in the /bin directory, and the other two files in the /Far Cry 3 directory. That solved the crashing for me.

yeah so after the 1.02 patch the "Uplay-> Offline mode" trick didn't work anymore with SweetFX (or any other injectors I guess)

putting just the two .dll and the .ini file in /bin and all other files in the main directory worked indeed :) even in online mode

thanks !
